Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which went missing over the Channel Islands.
The £15m Argentine striker, 28, was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu which lost contact off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.
Cardiff City, which signed Sala from French club Nantes in a record deal on Saturday, said it was "very shocked".
Guernsey Police said there was "no trace" of the Cardiff-bound flight and has suspended the search for the night.
"We have found no signs of those on board," the force tweeted.

The plane lost contact while at 2,300ft and disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, infamous among mariners as the site of many shipwrecks, eight miles (13km) north-west of Alderney.
[...]
"This morning, the French research started with one French national navy ship and one aircraft. The investigation will determine which authority will take the lead on the research."
[...]
The Met Office said conditions were not "too intense" at the time the aircraft went missing but had become wetter and windier later in the evening.
John Fernandez, a reporter for BBC Guernsey, said it was a difficult area to search.
"A number of search vessels are out searching the area. It's known for its strong currents - there are a number of shipwrecks," he added.

[...]
"The search area is absolutely massive at the moment. They're searching a number of different spots at the moment - they're not sure whereabouts this plane might have gone down."

Well, the Channel (the piece of sea between France and UK) is not so huge and certainly closely and highly monitored. So it would make sens to know exactly where the plane disappeared.

They said a number of floating objects had been seen in the water but were unable to confirm whether any were from the missing aircraft.

“Search and rescue operations have been suspended as the sun has now set,” Guernsey Police said on Tuesday evening. “The current plan is for (them) to resume at sunrise tomorrow.”

Here is a picture of the search zone. In the article containing the picture we can read: "A total of five planes or helicopters flew over the area in support of two lifeboats in an attempt to find the two men."

I don't know, perhaps if the plane sink directly, it's hard to find debris.

In a chilling voice message sent to friends, which Argentina’s Clarin newspaper said was authenticated by Sala’s father, Horacio, the player expressed concerns about the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft he was flying in.

“I’m in the plane and it looks like it’s going to fall apart,” he said. “Dad, I’m really scared.”

Air traffic controllers had guided searchers along the path flown by the light aircraft before it disappeared from radar screens at just over 2,000 feet (600 meters), Fitzgerald said.

The plane had been cruising at 5,000 feet (1,525 m) when the pilot requested to descend to a lower altitude on passing Guernsey. It lost radar contact at 2,300 feet (700 m), Guernsey police said.

Channel Island Air Search’s Fitzgerald said the pilot had filed a ‘VFR’ flight plan, which requires pilots to avoid bad weather, have sight of the ground, and stay out of certain air corridors.

Police on Tuesday said the chance of finding survivors was slim and the prospect appeared bleaker a day later, with the water temperature in the Channel barely 10 degrees centigrade.

Now Police said they stop research. So nothing had been found. I saw comments saying currents are strong and opposite in this area so can it explain why nothing had been found? Perhaps.

The wreckage of the plane carrying footballer Emiliano Sala was located on Sunday, two weeks after it disappeared from radar over the English Channel, according to the marine scientist leading a privately funded search for the Argentine’s family.

The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward had been en route from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on Jan. 21.

“The object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft,” Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement.

“Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police.”

The wreckage was found on Sunday following a privately-funded underwater search which began after two seat cushions were discovered on the French coast that likely belonged to the aircraft.

The AAIB said it had now concluded it was the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, issuing an underwater image of the crashed plane with part of its registration number - N264DB - clearly visible. “The image shows the rear left side of the fuselage including part of the aircraft registration,” the AAIB said. “We intend to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring.”

A body has been recovered from the wreckage of the plane that was carrying Argentina-born professional soccer player Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in Britain said late on Wednesday.

The agency did not disclose the identity of the body.

The body was "successfully recovered" but attempts to recover the aircraft wreckage were unsuccessful, the AAIB said in a statement. The overall operation was brought to an end due to "poor weather conditions," the agency said.

The body was taken to Portland Harbor in southern England on board the Geo Ocean III offshore supply ship.

It was then stretchered into a silver van, with Dorset Police confirming it had “left the boat and left the port,” before being taken to a nearby mortuary for identification and a post-mortem.

“This morning... the body was brought to Portland Port, Dorset, as this is the nearest part of the British mainland to where the plane was located,” said the police statement.

“While formal identification is yet to take place, the families of Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson have been updated.”

Another Soccer tragedy is being reported in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fire is being blamed on a faulty air conditioner.

A fire swept through the training center and lodgings of Rio de Janeiro soccer club Flamengo on Friday, killing 10 people, including members of the club’s youth side, firefighters and news reports said.

At least three youths aged 14 and 15 were injured in the blaze. All three were taken to the hospital, one of them reportedly in a serious condition.

Firefighters said they arrived at the Ninho do Urubu, a state-of-the-art training center that was expanded and opened only two months ago, shortly after 5 a.m. (0700 GMT) to find the building engulfed in flames.

Some people had managed to escape, but the ferocity of the blaze prevented firefighters from entering the facility.

“We managed to rescue the victims that were outside,” fire service Lieutentant Colonel Douglas Henaut told reporters. “The place was completely overtaken by fire. As much as we tried to get inside and find people still alive that wasn’t (possible) ... We only found bodies inside.”

“We can’t tell you the cause of the fire, that needs to be investigated,” he added.

One young player said the fire started in his room. “The air conditioner caught fire, and I ran out,” said Felipe Cardoso, a midfielder with the under-17 side. “Thank God I managed to run and I’m still alive.”

O Globo newspaper reported the building did not have the correct permits but did not cite sources.

One of the deceased was identified as Christian Esmerio, a 15-year-old goalkeeper.

“I had the pleasure of knowing you, unfortunately an accident interrupted your dream,” Gabriel Batista, a senior goalkeeper at the club, wrote on Instagram.

Expanded New Facility

After years of financial difficulties, Flamengo last year spent 23 million reais ($6.2 million) to expand the Ninho do Urubu training ground.

In addition to accommodation for young players, the facilities include several pitches, an aquatic park, a gym, a medical center and a mini-stadium.

The Ninho do Urubu, or Vulture’s Nest, is so called because the club’s symbol is a vulture.

Vinicius Junior, the teenage Real Madrid forward who trained at the facility before joining the Spanish giants last year, tweeted his condolences.

“What sad News! Praying for everyone! Strength, strength, strength,” he wrote.

The fire follows days of heavy rains that hit the city and claimed at least six lives. The rains led Flamengo to close parts of its social club and cancel regular training sessions it organizes for children.

Flamengo, the alma mater of players such as Zico, Junior and Leonardo, is one of the best-supported clubs in Brazil and is famous around the world. Known by fans as the Red-and-Black, they won the Copa Libertadores, South America’s version of the Champions League, in 1981 and lifted the Intercontinental Cup a few months later.

Zico, who was outside Brazil, wrote on Instagram: “What a shock getting this news here on the other side of the world.” “May the Red-and-Black nation have strength and faith to get through this moment,” the former Brazil midfielder wrote.

Flamengo made no official statement other than to tweet that it was in mourning.

But teams from around the world, including Rio rivals Botafogo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama, tweeted their solidarity and offered help that included psychologists and social workers.

Officials postponed Saturday’s two semifinals of the Guanabara Cup, one of which was between Flamengo and Fluminense at the famous Maracana stadium, host of the 2014 World Cup final.

The fire that killed 10 young footballers at Flamengo's training ground in Rio de Janeiro was caused by a spike of electricity that led to a fire in an air conditioning unit, the club's CEO Reinaldo Belotti said on Saturday.

All 10 of the dead were aged between 14 and 16 and either played for the club or were having trials there, Brazil’s Globo website reported.

Another fire being reported at a Soccer training camp, also blamed on an air conditioning unit?

A fire broke out at the training center used by Rio de Janeiro football club Bangu on Monday, sending at least two players to hospital with smoke inhalation but causing no serious injuries.

The accident happened three days after 10 Flamengo youth players died and three others were injured when their lodgings caught fire.

Bangu, one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in Rio, were training at a military athletics center when the blaze started after lunch.

The fire was quickly brought under control but two players were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, the military said in a statement.

Bangu could not be reached for comment about the blaze, which TV Globo said may have started in an air conditioning unit.

Friday’s fatal fire at the Ninho do Urubu also started when an air conditioning unit caught fire.

Sala, 28, was flying from his previous club Nantes in western France to Wales to join Cardiff City when the Piper Malibu aircraft disappeared over the English Channel.

“We have today ... arrested a 64-year-old man from North Yorkshire area on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act," said Detective Inspector Simon Huxter, of Dorset Police in a statement.

“He is assisting with our enquiries and has been released from custody under investigation.”

The statement said police would provide no further details on the man’s identity at this stage.

David Henderson, 64 year old pilot has been arrested.

Det Insp Simon Huxter, of Dorset Police, said officers "have to consider whether there is evidence of suspected criminality".

He added: "As a result of our inquiries, we have arrested a 64-year-old man from North Yorkshire on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act."
