Just to expand on this with my thoughts, there is no doubt that there is genuine unsatisfaction amongst the French people and I do not find Macron to be anything but the human embodiment of the neoliberal order, but the underlying reason for the protests to be so strong and effective is possibly of a geo-political nature.
There is one area Macron went out of the box and that is when he proposed to build an EU army which runs directly counter to US geo-political goals.
There are many things you can do that you can get away with with a slap on the wrist.
But building a massive army not directly in service of pax Americana is not one of them.
