Regarding that Russian sinkhole/impact crater, we were discussing it here a few days ago: I think PoB found that it was first reported in 2011. If I recall correctly, locals have no idea if it happened recently, ten years ago, or a hundred years ago.

Do you mean this sinkhole's age is not defined?
it's could explain why there are no obvious signs of meteor impact as the tumbled-down trees and the burned district. Could you or PoB provide link to report about this event?

False alarm: PoB confused two sink holes. The one that was reported in 2011 was in the Donbas.

So... this one in Yamal could well be 'new'; at least, it does appear to be news.

How certain is it that the above video is from the same sinkhole? I ask because the surrounding looks like grass while at the other video it looks like that there is fresh earth material diectly all around the whole and not grass. Also the hole itself does somehow not look similar...

Could the above be a different sinkhole?

There are at least two things supporting (but of course not proving) the idea that it's the same sinkhole. Firstly, according to Sergey's FB page, he WAS in Yamal in May 2014. Second, in one article they say that it's very unusual phenomena for Yamal.

I think this news report might clear some things up:

The reporter says, that the video was taken by a helicopter crew that services oil and gas companies. They were afraid to land, because, according to them, even when they were still in the air, there was a loud noise, similar to a noise made by a huge water flow. Then, the reporter mentions, that the story was quickly picked up by many news agencies, including in Chelyabinsk. They wrote an article on their site, that a giant "world's navel" has opened. And then they ask for witnesses of the hole to contact the TV station. That's it.

But there is more! I receive e-mail notifications from _thesinkhole.org. And here's what it says for today's post. Notice the global warming mention. But it does bring up interesting possibilities, like a methane explosion. But if so, how come no one heard it? Maybe the location is so remote? The TV report says, that the hole is located 30 km from Bolonenkovo (according to the search, probably one of the excavation sites).

A huge unexplained crater has appeared in Siberia, Northern Russia.
The Gas rich area where the hole was discovered - which is the main production area for Russian gas supplies to Europe - is called Yamal which translates to ''end of the world''.
The strange emergence of the hole has resulted in internet theories ranging from a possible UFO landing to a large meteor striking the earth.
The most plausible of the theories is that global warming caused an underground explosion due to melting ice, resulting in a mixture of gas, salt and water which could have ignited and exploded. This would explain the darkened sides of the hole which could be burn marks.

Thanks, s-kur, for correcting the location! Apparently, the hole is 30 km near Bovanenkovo, not Bolonenkovo.

I had to listen to the video several times in headphones to get it. :D What is interesting, apparently there is such a place as Bolonenkovo too in Yamal, there is even a railroad to it (unless it was renamed later, or just spelled incorrectly). But I searched the net for "Bovanenkovo+hole" in Russian, and it brings up other articles that mention this location, so Bovanenkovo is the correct one.

This one also discusses the possibility of a gas explosion:

By the formation of the huge crater in YNAD could cause an explosion "underground champagne"

Scientists have put forward several suggestions on how to could have formed a mysterious crater, discovered on the Yamal Peninsula in the area of the largest gas condensate field Bovanenkovskoye. Among them: meteorite, sinkhole, tuber formation and heaving explosion "underground champagne"

What a black hole in the ground in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District does exist, is confirmed by other survey also made a Mi-8 helicopter flyby during oil and gas fields. According to the publication "RG", helicopter pilots know about this phenomenon for several years, but the desire to study it closely, you have to go down to the ground in the area of the funnel, not experience. Residents of Russia and other countries of the giant failure in the land became known last week, after a video appeared on the Internet in flight over a black hole.

Having carefully reviewed the video, several scientists have made their assumptions about the nature of its origin.

The first of these suggests itself - the fall of the meteorite. This explains the funnel shape of the opening, and the release of soil, and the dark edge of failure. However, no notice of such magnitude meteorite (recall the funnel, according to witnesses, can simultaneously drop a few helicopters MI-8) or the consequences of his fall in the form of a small earth tremors impossible.

The second theory - the formation of sinkholes from the collapse of an underground vault cavity. But these phenomena are not characteristic of the Yamal Peninsula. And indeed the funnel should look different - "superfluous" element is the ground, thrown on the ground around the crater.

Third - heaving mound formation resulting breakthrough pressure water. Possible. But such mounds have a slightly different form, a little similar to the Yamal funnel.

There is also the fourth most interesting and the most frightening in our opinion theory. It put forward in an interview with "RG" executive director Subarctic scientific training ground, candidate of geological-mineralogical sciences Anna Kurchatov. According to her, the crater formed by the explosion of "underground champagne" - pressurized gas "trapped" under the icy piece of land. In general terms, the essence of the theory is as follows: a mixture of gas and water for a long time to accumulate in a cavity at a depth of about 15 meters, leak prevented him up a thick layer of ice, and the pressure increased under the influence of some additional factors explosion - the ice with sand thrown out, like a cork from a bottle of champagne.

The factors cataloging process Kurchatov Anna calls sediment deformation and effects of global warming. The latter factor, she said, the most alarming. If 40 years ago the average temperature of the permafrost in the area Bovanenko was -8 degrees Celsius, but now in some parts of all 3. It is possible that in the future such events will occur more frequently.

Global warming is nonsense of course, so if we're to follow the idea that gas was involved, it could have been methane outgassing from deep inside the Earth, which led to the formation of a pocket of gas trapped under ground... and that eventually led to an explosion of some sort. What then was the ignition? A lightning strike maybe?

Speaking of "underground champagne", I'm reminded of this incident in Russia last year:

Massive geyser erupts in Russian parking lot

Large crater appears at the 'end of the world'
By The Siberian Times reporter

A scientific team has been sent to investigate the hole and is due to arrive at the scene on Wednesday.

The expedition organised by the Yamal authorities includes two experts from the Centre for the Study of the Arctic and one from Cryosphere Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They plan to take samples of soil, air and water from the scene.

They will be accompanied by a specialist from the Emergencies Ministry.

Initial reports and images were suspected to be fakes, but the hole is a real phenomenon and it is believed to have been formed around two years ago.

The Yamal Peninsula in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is a strategic oil and gas bearing region of Russia.

It is Russia's main production area for gas and the Bovanenkovo field is of central importance to gas supplies from Siberia to the world.

The gas field was discovered in 1972 and developed by Gazprom starting production in 2012. The Yamal peninsula is bordered by the Kara Sea - Baydaratskaya Bay - to the west, and the Gulf of Ob on the east. It extends some 700 kilometres over mainly permafrost.

The area is famous for its reindeer herds and migratory birds.

The Nenets and Khanty reindeer herders hold about half a million domestic reindeer.

The remains of ancient woolly mammoths have been found in this enchanting territory.

Coordinates given by the original poster on Russian facebook for this 'crater-hole' place it very near the world's third-largest gas field, which is itself in one of the most oil and gas rich regions on Earth, which is itself within the Arctic Circle where methane has been outgassing at ever-increasing rates:

Fountains of methane 1,000m across erupt from Arctic ice

The Russian research vessel Academician Lavrentiev conducted a survey of 10,000 square miles of sea off the coast of eastern Siberia.

They made a terrifying discovery - huge plumes of methane bubbles rising to the surface from the seabed.

'We found more than 100 fountains, some more than a kilometre across,' said Dr Igor Semiletov, 'These are methane fields on a scale not seen before. The emissions went directly into the atmosphere.'

See first attached image for location of crater-hole.

See second attached image to get an idea of how pock-marked the region is.

Yep, the area has definitely a lot of holes all around (a slight understatement) and many of those seem to be filled with water now.

It seems this "lakes" is similar to discussed Bovanenkovo's sinkhole.
Maybe this sinkhole during the time will be filled with water also.

"there was a loud noise, similar to a noise made by a huge water flow" and the champagne remark are quite odd.
We had a mini sinkhole here about 30km away in a little town last year. The area is well known for mining potash, some people claim the whole area is undermined by now. In any case, the victims said they were awakened at night by the alarming noise of flowing water, rushing to their windows, but there was just this crater swallowing the environment. Neither explosion sounds nor tremble, if I recall it right. Strange though.

The scientists have not managed to finish analysing and explaining this sinkhole yet, as a news agency reported of a new similar discovery in the same Yamal region.
According to the report (http://www.interfax.ru/386909) it is smaller (15 meters in diameter), located 90 km from Antipauta village. The snow can be observed in it.
The local reindeer-breeders stated that on 27 September 2013 they saw a celestial body falling from the sky near that place followed by a bright flash.
No pics/video references though yet.
