The "Fake" Sheikh

Hello

I doubt few of you have heard of him but this fellow is causing quite a stir down under in Australia. He's a Shia Sheikh, his name is Mohammad Tawhidi and the reason he's causing a stir is because he says that Islam needs reform. He says that scriptures of Islam promote violence, misogyny and hatred.

His message is one of peace, tolerance and love delivered with a sense of humor, despite this Facebook and Twitter have barred him for his 'hate'.

The left wing media hate him, mainstream Muslims hate him refuse to debate him and he's already copped a death sentence for his views.

Question: Is Sheikh Mohammad Tawhidi genuine?

An internet search brought up numerous articles, private chat-rooms and Muslim Community bulletins warning of Tawhidi activities. After scanning for an hour or so, I wasn't able to come across "one article or posting" that painted him in a good light? He's described as a troublemaker, scam artist and a wannabe Sheikh who has constantly pestered his followers (numbering around 200 or so devoted souls) for donations and favors.

In two different Muslim Community chat rooms, there was speculation if Tawhidi "was a former Gulenist" for many of the quotes he inserts in his Twitter account and on Facebook - are direct quotes from Gulen publications? Yet, I didn't come across anything that directly tied Tawhidi with Gulen? His background is sketchy, other than his own promotions?

This was published yesterday July 4th for more donations:

Sheikh Imam Mohammed Tawhidi asks for $30thousand security

Sheikh who angered hardline Muslims by denouncing Sharia law asks followers for $30,000 for security guards and steel-barred windows at his home because he fears for his life.

The controversial sheikh who angered hardline Muslims by denouncing Sharia law has asked his supporters for $30,000 to pay for security guards and steel-barred windows at his home because he fears for his life.

Sheikh Mohammad Tawhidi, who has previously called for Islamic schools in Australia to be shut down and criticised extreme Islamic group Hizb-ut Tahrir, said abuse he received from radical Muslims grew so bad he was forced to abandon his home and seek refuge.

'I've been assaulted by Muslim leaders, ambushed and spat on in the streets,' he told Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday.

The Adelaide based Imam, who emigrated from Iraq when he was 12, also revealed people threatened to shoot him on the street if they saw him and even wanted him beheaded.

He said there a $5,000 bounty was put on his head in April, with one man branding him an 'infidel' and publicly calling for his beheading.

Imam Tawhidi sparked controversy earlier this year when he said he only came to Australia 'because it was a non-Muslim country'.

'If we knew after 30 years we are going to have burqas running around and mosques being erected on every corner and people proposing sharia law against democracy in this country… we wouldn't have come,' he said.

His outspoken opinion led to escalating threats from radical Muslims.

In response to the overwhelming abuse both online and offline, Imam Tawhidi created a GoFundMe charity page to raise money for extra security measures to help him 'stay alive and safe'.

'I need security iron grilles installed on my home windows which will cost around $10,000,' he said.

'I am looking to install a heavy duty fence around my property that will prevent any radicals from entering.'

He said he originally needed $50,000 to cover himself, but reduced it to $30,000 on Wednesday because he was offered a cheaper deal from a supporter.

'I have had radicals trespass my property before hoping to harm me.'

Imam Tawhidi said the campaign was a last ditch effort to ensure his safety while continuing to 'preach messages of peace and anti-radicalization'.

Exposing Imam Shaikh Brother Mohammad Tawhidi

am aware of the sensitive nature of these types of subjects, and I am only doing this as a duty for the believers to not become misguided by such individuals. This particular individual has been warned by others about his behavior but thus far has not heeded these words.

His own statements and behavior actually expose him on their own, and when reading the things that he writes one can see clearly already that he is not a person who carries the akhlaq and wisdom of Ahlulbayt (as).

However what is important here is he is damaging the institution and the Maraja in the eyes of the people.

This individual is going by the name of "Brother Tawheedi".

He has set up for him self a facebook page: XXXX

As well as a twitter page: XXXX

He is also in the process of starting his own website, which (alhamdulillah) at this point is not functional: XXXX

He has been speaking at various venues internationally.

(In the comments, there are Gulen quotes that Tawhidi uses in Facebook and on Twitter.)

Hello

Thanks for all your research. Indeed there is much said about him. He's not qualified, he flunked imam school but the one thing his critics never seem to mention or debate is his basic message which is quite simple. Some say he's doing it for the money but they say that about Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Islam has a huge problem; It's scriptures promote violence; It needs reforming; Hey guys be nice to each other!

The question is. Is he genuine?

I believe he is, there would be some self interest involved, self preservation for one and he enjoys living in a western country and wants to see it remain that way.

Is he genuine?

Cheers

Is he genuine?

I follow him on Twitter and have wondered the same thing. He doesn't "feel" 100% legit, but at the same time he is directly confronting the scriptual orthodoxy. I think anyone who accurately quotes any monotheistic texts and challenges the current PC gloss/textuality going on at least can be credited with some level of bravery.

he flunked imam school

My understanding is that there is no such thing as Imam School. Imam is just the prayer leader and anyone can do it, so long as the congregation agrees to be lead.

I know, it's a figure of speech but he is an islamic scholar, so am I for that matter, I've studied it extensively.

Cheers

As in "is he being paid by someone to say/do what he is saying/doing"?

I have not done any research on the guy. But reading what angelburst posted, I did not see anything which discredits him. Saying he is a "Gulenist" does not say much. Gulen lives in the West under the protection of people in power. This guy is asking for money on the internet for steel barred windows and security guards.

I can say that any Muslim who publicly criticizes the Islamic faith does have good reason to fear for his security or even his life, depending on where he is located. People do routinely get killed for such things in some parts of the world. There are good reasons why sufficiently large scale reform movements have not sprung up within the religion from Muslim majority countries. One reason is that one criticizes at one's own risk of life and limb; it does not mean that every Muslim is quite happy with the state of affairs within the religion. So it does not surprise me when a Muslim criticizes his faith after moving to a Western country where he may feel more secure doing what he does than where he came from. But then, automatically he might face the suspicion that he is a tool for Western governments or intelligence agencies. That is actually the first reaction from fundamentalists within the religion itself - that the person is either corrupted through exposure to foreign ideas and/or is being sponsored to propagate blasphemous thoughts. Guess it makes it easier to demonize and discredit the person than looking at the message. Anyway, I am not saying that such people cannot be or become pawns in geopolitical agendas. The message however can sometimes be more important than the "genuineness" of the person concerned. OSIT
