Just got word from a wedding a florist I do freelance work with that flower pickers in South America(?)/Central America(?) both(?) have been on strike this week and it has had an impact on the floral industry at least in the states:
I can imagine why these workers strike, but I don't think that there has been any investigative reporting on the conditions that they live with. Prices for flowers are really low--for example, we buy a medium-grade rose from a wholesaler for $1, sell it for $ 3. I can't imagine the low wages that these pickers are making on this huge farms. Googled thinking that there might be some news about it but nothing that I could find at all. Has anyone else heard about this?
