Train derailments and explosions and chemical spills

Re: Train Derailments and Explosions 2013

It would make sense that "rogue" electrical charges might be attracted to miles and miles of steel rails. would the nature of the electrical charges, possibly from the sun, cometary influences, charges from within the earth, or whatever produces the "sprites" maybe build up in the rails and spontaneously arc here and there causing trains to "jump" I know I have been getting shocked by almost everything I touch that is metal for the last 7 months or so, sometimes more than just a little.

What can we do with this data?!

It speaks for itself, I'm still picking my jaw off the floor here. Perhaps we could do the same google maps thing as with the sinkholes, or maybe if we can start sourcing video reports of each one we could make some kind of compilation. This is some of the most overt symbolism we've seen so far, and seeing them all together like this is just so powerful.

Sorry, this article is in french.

I found something in English. Interestingly, it happened the same day as the Swiss collision: http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2013/07/29/54-injured-in-Kazakhstan-train-crash/UPI-18361375098779/

It was also a similar type of crash to the Swiss one:

A locomotive slammed into a passenger train in Almaty, Kazakhstan, causing mostly minor injuries to 54 people, the Transportation Prosecutor's Office said.

Four of the victims were hospitalized, a prosecutor's statement said.

The locomotive was pulling an empty passenger train around the station in Almaty -- the largest city in Kazakhstan -- when it slammed into the train full of people on track 4 of station Alma-Ata-2 Sunday, RIA Novosti reported.

Re: Train Derailments and Explosions 2013

These are from all around the World... in Italy around 38 major train incidents are listed from 1960 to 2012, but I know that there have been many more 'minor' incidents also with casualties, the proof being my little town who suffered at least 3 incidents alone out of my 40 years memory of dwelling here, that are not reported anywhere.

Anyway out of those 38 incidents, 4 of them happened in 2012 alone, while the medium stats it's around 1 x year or less. So it's quite a big spike in the graph here. Another spike was around 1997 (5 incident listed), 1998 (5 incidents listed; 6 if we count the February 1999 one).

Re: Train Derailments and Explosions 2013

I wonder if Earth is opening up (sinkholes emerging all over) there could be another (beside electrical reason) catch here. I mean, due to tectonic activity, ground below very precisely engineered rails is not firm any more - it could be "stretching" and shifting/sinking in various ways. There is very narrow range of aberration that can be "tolerated". Furthermore railway infrastructure with no "firm ground" in base, like bridges, could be even more endangered IMHO...

Spain train crash driver admits driving at twice the speed limit

"Sitting uneasily before a judge, the train driver waved his hands in front of his face and was at a loss to explain why he didn't slow down, in a courtroom video released by a Spanish newspaper on Thursday.

"I can't explain it," Francisco Jose Garzon Amo said, shifting in his chair and looking around. "I still don't understand how I didn't see ... mentally, or whatever. I just don't know."

The journey was "going fine" until the curve was upon him, he said. When the danger became clear, he thought, "Oh my God, the curve, the curve, the curve. I won't make it."

The edited video of Garzon's appearance at Sunday night's court session in Santiago de Compostela, where the accident occurred last week, was released by Spain's ABC newspaper.

Two court officials said the video appeared authentic. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the video has not been officially released.

In it, Garzon, a slightly-built 52-year-old with short-cropped gray hair and glasses, appears shaken and at times hesitant. He sits in a simple chair in front of the judge, with four rows of chairs behind him in the small courtroom.

Garzon is wearing a dark jacket and trousers with an open-necked shirt. Behind him are two men in dark uniforms, and several other unidentified people are in the room. He also answers questions from a prosecutor.

The train had been going as fast as 119 mph (192 kph) shortly before the derailment. The driver activated the brakes "seconds before the crash," reducing the speed to 95 mph (153 kph), according to the court's preliminary findings based on black box data recorders. The speed limit on the section of track where the crash happened was 50 mph (80 kph).

In his Sunday night testimony, Garzon said he was going far over the speed limit and ought to have started slowing down several miles before he reached the notorious curve.

Asked whether he ever hit the brakes, Garzon replied, "The electric one, the pneumatic one ... all of them. Listen, when ... but it was already inevitable."

His voice shakes, his sentences break down and he appears close to tears as he replies to a question about what was going through his mind when he went through the last tunnel before the curve.

"If I knew that I wouldn't think it because the burden that I am going to carry for the rest of my life is huge," he said. "And I just don't know. The only thing I know, your honor, sincerely, is that I don't know. I'm not so crazy that I wouldn't put the brakes on."

The investigating judge is trying to establish whether human error or a technical failure caused the country's worst rail accident in decades, and Garzon is at the center of the investigation.

The judge provisionally charged Garzon on Sunday with multiple counts of negligent homicide. Garzon was not sent to jail or required to post bail because none of the parties involved felt there was a risk of him fleeing or attempting to destroy evidence, according to a court statement."

If the video is authentic (it appears so imo), the driver seems to have had some sort of 'mental lapse' which he cannot explain himself. He has admitted to speeding and braking when it was too late, and appears sincere and contrite. I still don't know whether an emergency braking system failed here, which may have overridden any 'human error' - but it certainly looks like something occurred to the drivers 'mental state' in the latter part of this journey that had been "going fine".

I've been searching the video and found it in the ABC newspaper's web, with the transcript although in the 18 minutes video it is not included all that is written in the transcript.

http://www.abc.es/espana/20130801/abci-declaracion-completa-maquinista-201307312127.html (the webpage with the video + the transcript)

It is all in spanish. I'm sorry I don't know how to translate it with google and paste it here. Maybe somebody can do it.

My first impressions after listening to it were that the train driver was not very well qualified (because he didn't answer very clearly) but later I thought he was very nervous in a situation like that.

After that I've read the transcript and discovered this:

He was working for the company RENFE since 1982 but he didn't start as a train driver. He started from 0. Nobody asks him when he became a train driver. He just says that he was a freight train driver up to 2011 when he started driving high-speed trains in Galicia and that since 2008 he drove suburban trains in Madrid.

Then I've learned as well that the route is to go at about 200 Km/h but the train driver must reduce the speed up to 80 Km/h before the fateful place of the accident and that the emergency/automatic brake system only works if the train goes faster than 200 km/h.

There is much more info in the transcript and in other webpages of the same newspaper but I don't have time now to delve in it.

Spain announces response to Santiago disaster
Written by Fernando Puente

SPANISH development minister Mrs Ana Pastor has announced a range of measures aimed at improving safety across the whole rail network after the accident at Santiago de Compostela on July 26, which left 79 dead and dozens injured.

Although the technical investigation now being carried out by CIAF, the body responsible for the investigation of railway accidents in Spain, will take several weeks, the government has recognised that the main factors behind the crash were driver error, and the lack of working ETCS equipment.

Speaking before the Parliament transport committee Pastor stated that a thorough inspection of the high-speed network is underway to indentify points where conditions similar to those behind the Santiago crash may occur.

This process will lead to the installation of conventional fixed signals indicating the maximum permitted speed, which were absent on the section of line where the accident occurred, and to the installation of Asfa balises to limit speeds on the approach to sharp curves.

The national automatic train protection (ATP) system was designed in the 1970s to protect trains from passing signals in danger, but will now also be used to enforce permanent speed restrictions at specific locations, such as the Santiago curve.

Pastor did not clarify, though, the reasons for the lack of functioning onboard ETCS equipment on the class 730 set which derailed in Santiago, nor the role that this could have played in the accident.

Trackside ETCS is operable on the Ourense – Santiago high-speed line, but Renfe class 730 sets operate exclusively on Asfa on this route even though they are equipped with ETCS, and operate under this system on the Madrid – Olmedo high-speed line.

Although the curve where the accident happened is not equipped with ETCS, the final ETCS balise on the high-speed line, located 4km from the crash site, would inform the driver (if ETCS is operational on the train) that the train is exiting an ETCS section, obliging him to acknowledge that situation and thus provide indirect information about the actual position of the train.

Trains operating on the Albacete – Alicante line, Spain's newest high-speed line, which opened in June, currently run exclusively on Asfa as ETCS is still being tested. Senior industry sources suggest that ETCS will be commissioned within the next few months, and point to the fact that the line was opened prematurely.

Other measures proposed by Pastor include tightening rules on the use of phones by drivers (an incoming call could have been a contributing factor to driver error in this case), and improved ticketing and passenger counting systems.

Spain train-crash testimony released

Driver realised accident that killed 79 was about to happen, according to audio record of his court testimony.

Last Modified: 01 Aug 2013 09:47

According to Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego a call was made between a work colleague who was travelling on the train, which should only happen in an emergency. Together with further information on the driver, the courts want to know if the rail company has any details of any other calls made or received by the train driver during the journey.

What we see, and this is a pattern, that everytime there is an accident of this sort, airplane, boat, metro, train or whatever where there are many victims, the responsible for the accident is always, always the driver. Or the captain, or the pilot. Never the company, never the government, never anybody else. Always the driver or the responsible of the machine. Never, ever. :cool2:

This is a pattern, like a law. Here, there and everywhere.

This subject, about this accident, seems very far away. People are now at the end of their holidays, enjoying their last days of free time. Life continues, as nothing. Other spectacles are hypnotizing the crowd. The crowd needs to feel that death by greed does not exists.

That's also what I thought at first.

Since the Earth is seemingly 'opening up', this change could also have an impact on railroads, making them unsafe/dangerous. That could also explain the raise in landslides and various other similar phenomena, osit. No firm ground indeed.
