What's in your Probiotic?

TheSpoon

Jedi
I failed to find any threads giving recommendations for Probiotics, although there was this discussion about the pros and cons of genus Bacillus. Apologies if I didn't look well enough.

I recently started "Nu U Probiotic complex" (via Amazon UK) which contains:
  • Acidophilus
  • Streptococcus Termophilus
  • Lactobacillus Rhamnpsus
  • Lactobacillus Salivarius
  • Bifidobacterium Bifdum
My enquiry started because I was thinking about iodine being an antiseptic and how many strains of bacteria there are in the gut and here's me replacing them with just 5, so I suppose my question in this post is: What does the forum think about that? Are there particular probiotic strains that we should be aiming for?

This article suggests there are > 5000 strains of bacteria in the gut, although I assume they're not all good guys! _http://www.livescience.com/3092-human-gut-loaded-bacteria-thought.html

I found this article about the different strains of probiotic bacteria, which was helpful as it gave an indication of the benefits of each one: _http://www.drdavidwilliams.com/probiotic-strains/

I'm taking 1 drop daily of 12% Lugols in a pint of water mid morning, with probiotic before bed, small glass of celtic sea-salt water on waking.

Hi Peter:My Probitic this time is Udo`s choice from Canada.
Which contains:

Lactobacillus casei Ha-108......................35%
Lactobacillus rhamnosus Ha-111..............25%
Lactobacillus acidophilus ha-122..............20%
Lactobacillus Plantarum Ha-119...............10%
Bifidobacterium bufidum Ha-132..............5%
Bifidobacterum breve Ha-129..................5%

I also add to my diet fermented foods and krill oil which helps a lot!!! ;)

Recently I started taking Bacillus Coagulans because of their alleged ability to survive all sorts of extreme environments and form spores.

Spore Formation: Why Bacillus Coagulans is so Much More Effective

One important reason for the superiority of Bacillus coagulans is its ability to produce spores. Spore-forming bacteria are something like ordinary plant seeds. When left alone, seeds are dormant—not alive, but not dead either. Rather, they remain in their protective shield in a state of “readiness.” However, as soon as they encounter an environment with the right temperature and moisture content, they start to germinate, or grow.

Spore-forming bacteria, such as Bacillus coagulans, work in a very similar way. In the stomach, the spores are activated by the low pH, mechanical churning, and moisture. They absorb water and start to swell, which increases the bacteria’s metabolic rate. As the bacteria pass through the duodenum and into the small intestine, outgrowths begin to protrude from the spore-coats and the cells begin germinating and transforming into viable cells. Proliferation begins in earnest in the small intestine, where the bacteria multiply rapidly, gain motility by growing flagella, and begin colonizing and going to work producing lactic acid—which discourages the growth of harmful pathogens—and helping digest food. Germination usually begins about four hours after ingestion.

Typically spore-forming bacteria are something to avoid at all cost. For example, Clostridium botulinum (the organism that causes botulism) can cause food poisoning and death. But instead of damaging health, select health-promoting spore-forming bacteria like Bacillus coagulans can take advantage of their high survivability to quickly inoculate the GI tract with healthy flora.

In a published clinical trial, hyperlipidemic adults who supplemented with Bacillus coagulans for three months experienced reductions in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), along with increases in beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL).29 This promising finding suggests that Bacillus coagulans may also help promote healthy lipid profiles.

Recently, Bacillus coagulans has been recommended by Mehmet Oz, MD, and Michael Roizen, MD, in their book YOU: The Owner’s Manual, Updated and Expanded Edition.30 Drs. Oz and Roizen outlined the importance of beneficial bacteria in the gut for maintaining digestive and immune health. Their probiotic of choice: a daily dose of 2 billion cells Bacillus coagulans (the amount found in a typical capsule).

Udo's choice contains silicon dioxide (which is nano particules that can damage the DNA) :
http://fr.sott.net/article/21031-L-ADN-endommage-par-les-nano-particules

On this topic Matai said that the brand Elixa is the most concentrated :
https://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=37601.0

It contains :
Lactobacillus Acidophilus,
Lactobacillus Plantarum,
Lactobacillus Reuteri,
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus,
Lactobacillus Casei,
Lactobacillus Salivarius,
Lactobacillus Helveticus,
Bifidobacterium Bifidum,
Bifidobacterium Lactis,
Bifidobacterium Longum,
Bifidobacterium Infantis,
Bifidobacterium Breve

I've been looking into repopulating my microbiome as well. I came across Custom Probiotics which makes a number of excellent products one of which is 400 Billion Cfu's for 30 days @ US$130 so slightly more economical than elixirs but not providing as many differnet strains. They also allow you to order your own combination. You can find them here: http://www.customprobiotics.com/products.htm

Some things to keep in mind:

If you suspect you have histamine issues then L Casei, L Reuteri, L Bulgaricus will aggravate that problem whilst B infantis, B Longum, L Plantarum will do the opposite (their histamine degrading bacteria).

Some people with certain conditions can find it difficult to properly metabolize excess D-Lactate produced by taking large amounts of certain strains most notably L Acidophilus.
If any of the following symptoms of D-Lactic Acidosis appear/worsen when you take probiotics you should discontinue, they are:
Nausea and pallor
Headaches
Weakness
Slurred speech
Carbohydrate cravings
Concentration difficulties
Impaired motor coordination
Gait disturbances
Involuntary eye movements
Unusual behavior (agitation/irritability)
Teeth grinding
Extremely painful muscle spasms (rigidity)
Hyperventilation

Soil Based Organisms like Prescript Assist are very popular in the paleo community. Theres a good blog with a lot of info on the microbiome that has the following post on them:
http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com.au/2013/11/how-to-cure-sibo-small-intestinal-bowel_16.html ( Theres alot of talk about heavy use of fibers/starch as prebiotic IMO I'd skip over that)
The author of that blog also wrote an article on foundational flora here:

Probiotics are very much like iodine in that everyone has different needs and will benefit differently from various strains.

Hope this helps

Last year, I tried Custom Probiotics 6 strain formula. It contains the following:
L. Acidophilus,
L. Salivarius, L. Plantarum,
L. Rhamnosus, B. Lactis and
B. Bifidum.

It was too expensive to continue to take regularly. I experienced some constipation for about a week then following on that some loose stools and an episode of "disaster pants" :/

I didn't take it long enough to really notice any benefit.

From what I've read the best way to pick a probiotic is to know the likelihood of which strains may have colonized your gut as an infant and to provide the same. This would be strains passed on through the particular environment in which you lived, what was passed to you from your mother and the foods you ate growing up.

Probably the most reasonable way to approach the issue is to pick the most common strains then add on others that may address whatever issue you may be having. All from a quality manufacturer, of course.

True but there's a problem with working off what we were born with. Most of us are the product of a few generations of antibiotic taking western diet consuming folk and everyone is the result of thousands of years of agriculture on top of that. All of that has drastically changed the human microbiome from what it ought to look like.

But keeping what you said in mind B. Longum might be worth considering:

Scientists have sequenced the genome of one of the most important residents in the human gastrointestinal tract, a bacterium that keeps the digestive system running smoothly, blocks the growth of harmful bacteria, and boosts the immune system. The microbe, called Bifidobacterium longum, is often the dominant bacterium found in humans.

<snip>

Bifidobacterium longum is among the first colonizers of the sterile digestive tract of newborns and predominate in breast-fed infants, according to the scientists. The research team isolated the bacterium from the feces of an infant.

Also one study found:

The presence of Bifidobacterium longum in the gut seems to be a particular feature in centenarians

Thanks jsf.I re.checked the ingredients and you are right contains silicon dioxide :scared:Fortunately it is the first time i try udo´s choice and is going to be the last time... and i will be careful about the tiny letters...One more time GRACIAS AMIGO/A ;)

Ouch...Just realized I too bought some probiotics from Biovea that contains silicon dioxide. Should've researched better before, as always. Thank you jsf for posting the info about it, and everybody for bringing the issue of probiotics into focus.

Well, after reading the link about DNA damage, at least silicon dioxide isn't the nano material most harmful to our genetic code:

"Zinc oxide and silver produced the greatest DNA damage in both cell lines. At a concentration of 10 micrograms per milliliter—a dose not high enough to kill all of the cells—these generated a large number of single-stranded DNA breaks.
Silicon dioxide, which is commonly added during food and drug production, generated very low levels of DNA damage. Iron oxide and cerium oxide also showed low genotoxicity."

Thank you very much latulipenoire for the info, anyway we must to be careful with the nano particules...even if is low levels.
