Who was the writer mentioned in Gurdjeiff's First book?

In going through G's first three I come across a mention of an ordinary writer. Anyone know or have an idea who G is referring to in 12?
"Everybody now regards his writings with the same veneration as was felt
by ancient Kalkians when they listened to the prophecies of their sacred
'pythonesses.'

Impossible to know for sure, but in a manuscript of the draft for Beelzebub's tales (I think it was one of the editors', maybe Orage?), someone had penciled in the name of Tolstoy.
