What's the weather where you are?

May was exceptionally warm month in Finland, but in june there's been more raining and change in weather, storms too - which is rare. The weather of May and June have kinda switched their places this year.

During the last hours of Thursday the 23rd and the first hours of Friday the 24th of June a massive thunderstorm passed areas of Denmark, which registered 12000 thunderstrikes and a very unevenly distributed rainfall. In one location they set a new record for the Danish part of Scandinavia, as they collected 5,4 mm in one minut. Previous record was 4,4mm/min and third on the list is 4.0 mm/min. I am happy the 5,4mm/min of rain did not fall as snow as that would have meant more than 5 cm in one minut. Fortunately 5,4mm/min is far, far away from the measured world records. One finds for example:

One-minute rainfalls

It is hard to imagine how an accurate measurement of precipitation over a 60-second period can be made. However, the U.S. Weather Bureau conducted several exhaustive studies of the Unionville, Maryland claim to 1.23” in one minute on July 4, 1956 and determined it to be accurate [see for the Monthly Weather Review summary)].
July 4th 1956, is almost 60 years ago. 1.23" is around 31 mm of rain and all that in one minute! That is some cleaning for Independence Day.

Heavy rain continues in Kyushu

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20160625_18/
Sporadic rain continues to fall over Kyushu in the southwest of Japan following record precipitation across the region.
The Meteorological Agency says a low atmospheric pressure system is dumping heavy rain over the island.

It says some areas have recorded 400 to 700 millimeters of rain.

Authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu and Hokkaido in the north say there is a possibility of mud slides where heavy rain has loosened the earth and swelled rivers.

The Meteorological Agency is also warning of possible mud slides and flooding, and advising people in Hokkaido to exercise caution in heavy winds.

Interesting weather in the UK continues. From social media we have large hail, a funnel cloud and a circumzenithal arc - and there's chatter about more thunder and lightning in places:

As mentioned in the Sott article: Fire rainbows, sun dogs appear over Flagstaff, Arizona - England has also had a few interesting atmospheric effects this week, on top of the increased thunder and lightning, heavy hail in places and generally disturbed 'summer' weather.

Fire rainbows, or circumhorizontal arcs, are formed under very strict circumstances. First, the sun must be high in the sky. Second, cirrus clouds have to be present and not only present, but also made up of hexagonal ice crystals. This shape refracts the light from the sun that passes through and creates the colorful rainbow hues among the clouds.

Heavy Rainfall Cause Flood Killing 1, Injuring 5 in Russia’s Rostov-on-Don

Heavy rainfall and strong wind caused Thursday a flood killing a girl and injuring five more people in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief told RIA Novosti.

"According to preliminary data, one person was killed and five injured as a result of the bad weather," the ministry’s head office in the region said.

The victim is said to be a 14-year-old girl, who drowned at one of the central avenues of the city.

One more young man is said to be injured by electric current as a result of a damage of an electric transmission line.

An area near the city’s railway station was flooded, which caused delays in the movement of trains.

The disaster left some districts of Rostov-on-Don as well as neighbouring towns of Azov and Bataysk without electricity.

Authorities declared an emergency in Rostov-on-Don. According to weather forecasts, the region will be hit by further rainfalls on Friday.

It's kind of odd. Melbourne weather (Australia) is pretty crazy at the best of times (20 deg C shifts in maximum temps in Summer). I seem to remember a very DRY Winter last year and THIS year, nothing but rain, rain and more rain. My front lawn is an ever growing and gathering puddle. This is because the water does not drain too well because it is very clay soil.

Autumn this year was very hot and seem to go on forever. We thought Summer would never end, and then.... very cold and wet, more wet and this happened very quickly and seems to be constant. I'm glad I put insulation in the house I live in.

And according to the KNMI, the average rainfall across the country was 115 mm, around two times the normal average for the month June.

Currently, in the west at least, it appears that the stormy weather is gone, and temperatures are around 12-20 degrees Celsius.

At least 530 people were hospitalized with heat stroke on Sunday in Japan, where in 42 districts the air temperature exceeded 35 degrees Celsius, reaching sometimes 38.6 degrees, local media reported.

According to the Kyodo news agency, four people lost consciousness during the field work, and are currently in critical condition.

Japan's Meteorological Service said that the heat occurred because of the high atmospheric pressure, and predicted that hot weather was also expected.

On Saturday, 420 people were reportedly hospitalized with heat stroke due to the hot weather.
