Another rally in Malaysia

Just more updates on the situation;

Looks like Malaysia is going to ratify the TPP soon :

Mustapa: Malaysia not certain to sign TPP
http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/mustapa-malaysia-not-certain-to-sign-tppa

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5—Malaysia is not automatically entering the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) that was finalised today after nearly five years of negotiation, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said today.

Allaying concerns that the conclusion of the long-drawn talks will mean that Malaysia will soon join the trade deal that critics contend will erode its sovereignty, the international trade and industry minister said this must still be decided by vested parties.

“Let me reiterate that whether or not Malaysia becomes a Party to the TPPA will be a collective decision,” he said in a statement tonight.

“Once the complete and official text of the Agreement is prepared, it will be in the public domain and presented to Parliament for debate.”

Mustapa said that Putrajaya will hold full consultations with interested parties and the public, adding that Malaysia will not be party to any deal that violates the Federal Constitution or undermines government policies implemented to benefit Malaysians.

The minister further said that TPPA member states agreed to consider Malaysia’s requests on areas of sensitivity, such as procurement, state-owned enterprises and the Bumiputera issues.

Describing the TPPA as a “comprehensive, 21st century free-trade agreement,” Mustapa went on to say that Putrajaya believed the agreement will benefit the country and mitigate the challenges of the global economic environment.

From the minister's statements, its clearly typical government doublespeak, and that means they are very likely going to ratify it, as parliament is merely a rubber stamp for the PM. Hence it looks like the Empire has clearly trapped Malaysia into its fold - as they have got PM Najib exactly where they want him due to the various scandals - exposed and fully compliant to their demands...sigh!

I think the situation is accurately portrayed by columnist Azly Rahman :

Did M’sia just sign a suicidal deal?
http://www.malaysiakini.com/columns/314802

Already, the Malaysian economy is in its last breath; the TPPA will be that nail bigger than the coffin to ensure the totality of the total global domination of the American Empire on steroids. It will be devastating to generations to come; akin to the selling of a child into debt-bondage and servitude.

Welcome to the matrix of Malaysian madness. the TPPA is a case of ‘Tipah Tertipu Big Time’, if we wish to explain it to the kampongfolks. This one is more real that the puzzles and the mysteries of Najib Abdul Razak’s 1MDB and the missing MH370 airliner.

Don’t our ministers of trade study sophisticated Business English? Or - how to identify a country’s suicide note?

We will be doomed, to start with. We have signed that suicide note. Even the American people know that it is authored by the rich and powerful who serves only one god: money.

Yet again, the government fails the people. Najib as incompetent as usual, backed up into a corner without much choice but to sign the dotted line. I wonder how long we'll be enjoying this relative calm?

More updates on the situation.

In the face of growing calls for the PM to step down, he (and his wife) have now gone for the jugular - by introducing the National Security Bill 2015. Basically a total clampdown on all freedoms in Malaysia, and one at that goes against the constitution (like that ever mattered).

Excerpts of two good op-eds below on the situation; looks like Nazi Germany was indeed a trial run...

NSC bill the final step in Zimbabweisation of Malaysia
www.malaysiakini.com/news/322118

Let me get straight to the point: the National Security Bill 2015 tabled in Parliament on Tuesday and approved yesterday is nothing less than a prelude to dictatorship, the final step in the "Zimbabweisation" of Malaysia.

The bill, rushed through Parliament with unholy haste, is so patently and blatantly undemocratic in its intent that it staggers the imagination that any government in this day and age would even contemplate it.

It is a new low from a government that has consistently and increasingly disregarded the spirit of our constitution and trampled upon the rights of the people with callousness and impunity in order to cling to power.

The bill creates, in effect, a police state wherein the government and its agents are empowered, in the name of national security, to do anything they want with total impunity and without regard to constitutional constraints and obligations.

And this from a government that has already amassed more power than any previous government. Today, the executive has untrammelled powers over almost every aspect of national life, especially given the erosion of traditional checks and balances. Our citizens have never been more at the mercy of the executive, never been more vulnerable, more exposed, more intimidated.

Nevertheless, the government continues to insist that it needs more power, less checks and balances, less accountability. Why? What clear and present dangers lurk in the shadows that require such powers to deal with? What threats are out there that would justify such draconian laws?

Is it the threat of IS (Islamic State) militancy?

Surely the police already have enough power to tackle that head on. What is lacking is the political will to root out Islamic militancy and radicalism and the wisdom to craft winning strategies instead of the empty rhetoric that we keep hearing.

Is it to meet the kind of incursion that Sabah experienced not too long ago?

Again, we have all the firepower, the human power and the necessary legal framework to deal with such contingencies. After all, we’ve spent billions on defence and training. We have warplanes and submarines and tanks and all the other hardware that are needed.

Again, what is lacking is leadership. Our men in uniform are brave and dedicated but the same cannot be said of our leaders who were indecisive and incompetent throughout the crisis.

Is it to meet the kind of civil disturbance brought on by extremist groups like the Red Shirts who recently threatened a bloodbath in Petaling Street?

Again, we don’t need more laws; what is needed is for the government itself to take a clear, consistent and unequivocal stand against extremism, racism and religious intolerance. After all, if the Chinese ambassador could single-handedly calm the situation in Petaling Street, think what the prime minister could do if he really wanted to.

An Umno power grab

Clearly, therefore, this bill is more about consolidating power, silencing dissent, stifling the opposition and intimidating the people than anything else. It is a power grab plain and simple, the end game in Umno’s strategy of acquiring absolute and total power.

It will crush what’s left of our democracy. It will institutionalise kleptocracy. It will bring us closer to the day when we will once again be ruled by a national operations council. It will make peaceful change impossible.

It is an act of desperation by a government fearful of its own people and terrified of change. As the man in the street knows all too well, the greatest threat to Malaysia today is not from subversion, incursion or invasion but from a government which has increasingly abused its authority, corrupted our institutions, and undermined our social fabric just to stay in power.

To be sure, government apologists will demand that we trust the government, arguing that it is acting in the best interests of the nation, that we live in an increasingly dangerous world.

Baloney to all that; this is a government with a long history of betrayal and broken promises and a litany of abusive actions and undemocratic behaviour. It simply cannot be trusted with such power.

The day this bill become law will be a day of infamy and shame, a day of mourning, the blackest day in our history. Parliament must rise to the occasion and reject this draconian measure before the lights go out on our already feeble democracy.

DENNIS IGNATIUS, a former Malaysian ambassador, firmly believes that we should put our trust not in the leadership of great men but in the sanctity of great institutions - our secular and democratic constitution, a democratically elected parliament, an independent judiciary, a free press and a government fully accountable to the people. He blogs here.

Najib’s wages of fear
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/322248

War against the constitution

However, the apogee of this fear is the creation of the National Security Council (NSC) that a confidant of mine refers to as the National Scoundrel Conclave. Something of this magnitude displayed for the whole world to see the cowardice that grips this prime minister.

Malaysia has always been a country toying with the idea of police state. We have had and currently have numerous laws in our books, that curtail the fundamental freedoms that other take for granted. Race and religion have been used to subjugate the Malay majority and humiliate the non-Malay minority. Class concerns have been conflated as racial ones and numerous laws have been promulgated to aid in the suppression of independent thought.

Three years ago in a comment piece titled ‘Umno's war drums herald bleak future’, I had this to say during the height of another Umno gathering - “The long Umno watch has been an era of 'Gleichschaltung'.

For those unfamiliar with the term, it is Nazi terminology meaning 'coordination' or "the restructuring of German society and government into streamlined, centralised hierarchies of power, with the intention of gaining total control and coordination of all aspects of society".

Or indeed the rather ominous issuing of military ranks to Rela, which I described in the same article - “The formation of para-security groups such as Rela (People's Volunteers Corps), which Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak once described as Umno's ‘last line of defence’.”

The National Security Council is the logical conclusion of this. Before this, the instruments of control, the security apparatus, the judiciary and the various religious departments and assortments of bureaucratic agencies manned by zealots with delusions of grandeur, which trampled on the rights of the average Malaysian, were at least held to some vague degree of accountability.

It was this vague, dare I say it, hopeful glimmer of official accountability that kept the endless police reports, court cases and activism alive in the hope that aggrieved Malaysians had some official avenue to express their dissatisfaction and hopefully get some form of resolution.

What the NSC does is crush this belief under a jackboot. It is a piece of legislation that tells Malaysians that the government of the day henceforth cares little for them but more importantly cares little for their rights. It is literally an act of war against the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Malaysian constitution and an act of war against a population already living under oppressive laws.

Let me be very clear. The NSC operates under total secrecy, is answerable to no official body and is immune to any kind of inquiry or sanction. It is a council based on preserving the power not of a political party but rather one person. This is not a statement of hyperbole or a polemic against Big Government.

The prime minister literally operates with immunity and impunity and decides whom the enemies of the Umno state or rather who his enemies are. This is an Act (as well as an act) with far-reaching consequences.

This is the consequence of Najib remaining in power. How a leader who has demonstrated that he tolerates no dissent from adherents from within his own party, be expected to rationally use such powers that no leaders of functional democracies should ever have?

Indeed, I wonder if those Umno rebels voted for this abomination. If you did vote for it let me remind you that your belief in the Umno system will do you no good when the Umno system comes for you.

For the rest of us, all we can hope to do is be Churchillian thought mice that terrify this potentate.

S THAYAPARAN is Commander (Rtd) of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

Thanks Mr.Cyan, very interesting, and horrifying. It seems that the proverbial Orwellian boot-stamping comes true around the world.

“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.” - George Orwell

Thanks luc, indeed the jackboot is firmly stamped on humanity's face - and the situation in Malaysia is currently mirroring whats happening around the globe - just utter madness.

However, from the C's, i think it will definitely come to pass when the earth changes intervene :

21st Nov 2015 Session
(L) It's Nazi Germany all over again, only it's freakin' global!

(Andromeda) That's pretty depressing.

A: Yes. It will pass when the big changes come.

Q: (L) And I'm assuming you mean cosmic changes like Earth changes?

A: Yes.

Looks like another nail in the coffin for Malaysia; Parliament has approved the ratification of the TPPA:

Dewan Rakyat passes TPPA motion after two-day debate

http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/328480

The government pushed through the motion for Malaysia to participate in the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) in Parliament today.

It was passed with a majority of 43 votes in a bloc vote: 127 lawmakers voted for it, with 84 against............

Mustapa also addressed the warning that the country might be recolonised through TPPA, in a repeat of the 1874 Pangkor Treaty, which paved the way for the British imperialism in Malaya.

"We were not that smart then - give us a little money and we sold the country," he said, adding that history will not repeat itself as the country now has a group of smart lawmakers.

And to illustrate just how smart the Malaysian lawmakers are:

AG: No charges against PM, SRC and RM2.6b cases closed

https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/328237

No charges will be brought against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak based on the investigations carried out by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali said he has studied the investigation papers and was satisfied that there are no grounds for action.

"Based on the facts and evidence as a whole, I, as the public prosecutor, am satisfied that no criminal offence has been committed by the prime minister in relation to the three investigation papers.

"I will return the relevant investigation papers to MACC today, with the instruction to close the three investigation papers," he told a press conference in Putrajaya this morning.

Apandi was referring to the investigations concerning the RM2.6 billion political donation and RM42 million from SRC International transferred into Najib's personal bank accounts.

SRC is the former subsidiary of the prime minister's debt-laden brainchild 1MDB.

The transfers were first disclosed by the Wall Street Journal and whistleblower website Sarawak Report last July 3 based on leaked documents from Malaysian investigators.

Twenty-five days later, Apandi's predecessor Abdul Gani Patail was removed on health grounds, sparking off speculation it could be related to the investigations.

Following this, Najib dropped his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin and another minister Shafie Apdal from the cabinet.

The police also embarked on a hunt for those who leaked the investigation documents, prompting MACC to hold special prayers to seek divine protection.

Najib's detractors, such as former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, were not convinced that the RM2.6 billion, transferred in two batches ahead of the last general election in 2013, was a donation from a Middle Eastern source.

Meanwhile, Apandi revealed today Najib had returned RM2.03 billion to the Saudi royal family, two months after the May general election.

The prime minister, on the other hand, denied abusing public funds for personal gain and claimed that there is a conspiracy to topple him.

More interesting developments in Malaysia.

In the grip of PM Najib and his Wife - the country has been deteriorating fast over the last year; and now we have former PM Mahathir Mohammad teaming up with the opposition to try and stem the tide; they have just released a "Citizen's declaration". Its a first time in the history of the nation that a former PM, is officially teaming up with the opposition to call on the citizens for the removal of the PM. Not sure where all this is going to go, because i think the psychopathic couple in charge of the nation is going to hang on till the bitter end...

Declaration below:

From: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/332750

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, ex-deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, opposition and NGO figures have inked a declaration for the removal of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and to institute reforms.

Below is the list of demands contained in what is described as the Citizens’ Declaration:

1. We, the undersigned citizens of Malaysia, append below our concerns over the deteriorating political, economic and social conditions in the country.

2. We wish to draw the attention of the people of Malaysia to the damage done to the country under the premiership of Najib Abdul Razak.

3. Under his administration, the country has ascended to become one of the 10 most corrupt countries in the world according to Ernst and Young in their Asia Pacific Fraud Survey Report Series 2013. The 2015 Corruption Perception Index showed Malaysia has dropped four places from 50 to 54.

4. This is because he believes that money can ensure his position as prime minister of Malaysia. He believes that "Cash is King".

5. Allocations to all ministries and public institutions including universities have been reduced because of shortages of funds. Even when allocations are budgeted for, no money was available.

6. In 2009, he decided to set up a sovereign wealth fund to earn income for the government.

7. He created the 1MDB which became indebted with RM42 billion of loans which it is unable to repay. It is no longer a sovereign wealth fund. It is a sovereign debt fund.

8. 1MDB borrowed approximately RM20 billion to acquire three power plant companies for an over-priced (sum of) RM12.1 billion. Despite being awarded new power plant contracts and extensions to the expiring power-producing concessions, the 1MDB power companies were sold for RM9.83 billion, or a loss of RM2.72 billion.

9. 1MDB invested or lent a total of US$1.83 billion to Petrosaudi International (PSI) Limited between 2009 and 2011 under the pretext of bogus projects or non-existent assets. Bank Negara Malaysia had demanded 1MDB return the above money to Malaysia as its approval was given based on misinformation submitted by 1MDB. Of this sum, a total of US$1.4 billion was directly and indirectly siphoned off to Good Star Limited and other companies controlled by Low Taek Jho.

10. To hide the missing funds, 1MDB "disposed" of its investments and loans to PSI for US$2.318 billion, claiming to have made a profit of US$488 million. However, no money was returned to Malaysia. Instead, 1MDB claimed it invested the funds in Cayman Islands that was subsequently found to be an unlicensed investment manager. KPMG was sacked as 1MDB's auditors for refusing to confirm the value of the investment in the mysterious Cayman fund.

11. 1MDB claimed that the Cayman Islands investment has been fully redeemed. (A sum of) US$1.22 billion was reportedly redeemed on Nov 5 2014 but was substantially utilised on the very same day to compensate Aabar Investments PJS for the termination of options granted to Aabar to acquire 49 of 1MDB's power companies. This is a lie because the parent of Aabar, International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC), did not mention receipt of any such payments in its audited accounts published on the London Stock Exchange. Instead, the accounts stated that 1MDB owes IPIC the sum of US$481 million for the termination.

12. 1MDB also took another loan of US$975 million from a Duetsche Bank-led consortium in September 2014, for the very same purpose of compensating Aabar for the terminated options. The Wall Street Journal has exposed the fact that this money may have been paid to a different British Virgin Islands entity with a similar name, "Aabar Investment PJS Limited", whose beneficial owner is completely unrelated to IPIC. The simple scam has fooled even the 1MDB auditors, Deloitte Malaysia, into believing that the payments were indeed received by IPIC's Aabar.

13. 1MDB announced that it made a second and final RM1.1 billion redemption of the Cayman Islands investment in January 2015. Initially the PM told Parliament that the sum was held in cash in BSI Bank, Singapore. However, two months later in May 2015, he informed Parliament that it was not in cash but "assets". Subsequently, it was explained that these assets were "units" which meant that they were never redeemed in the first place. This proved that 1MDB and the PM have been consistently lying to the Malaysian public. It also means that the money invested in Petrosaudi, which was reinvested in Cayman Islands, is still missing and unaccounted for.

14. A former Umno vice-head of the Batu Kawan division made a police report on the loss of large sums of money by 1MDB. No investigations were carried out by the police. Instead, he was interrogated by police, detained and charged under anti-terror law (Sosma) for sabotage of the Malaysian economy. His lawyer was also arrested and charged under the same law. This has the effect of frightening people from making police reports on the 1MDB.

15. The Wall Street Journal reported that Najib had US$681 million in his private account at Ambank.

16. Najib denied this at first but later admitted he had the huge amount of money in his account. He claimed that it was a gift from an Arab; then that it was a donation to help him win GE13 in Malaysia; then that it was given because of his dedication to the fight against Islamic terrorists. He then claimed to have received the money from a Saudi prince, then from the King of Saudi Arabia who had passed away.

17. Later a Saudi minister stated there was no record of such a gift by the Saudis. He suggested it was probably a Saudi investment. The amount was small.

18. Najib expressed his intention to sue the Wall Street Journal. But he did not. Instead, he asked his lawyers to ask the Wall Street Journal why it published the report.

19. To this day the WSJ continues to report more and more details about the US$681 million he has in his private account. He has not sued WSJ, which he can do in the country the WSJ is published.

20. Concerned over the huge sum of money in Najib's private account, a task force was set up in Malaysia to investigate the origin of the money. Four government institutions became members of the task force. They are the police, the attorney-general, Bank Negara and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

21. Before the task force was able to finish its work, the attorney-general was removed by Najib claiming that he was sick and could not continue to work. Basically Najib had misrepresented to the King to get the attorney-general to be replaced. The Public Accounts Committee was basically paralysed by Najib removing its chairman and members to prevent its investigations of the 1MDB. A new chairman, friendly to Najib, was appointed and he promptly declared that Najib had done nothing wrong.

22. He then appointed a new attorney-general. Shortly thereafter the new attorney-general dismissed a recommendation by Bank Negara for action to be taken, claiming that nothing in the report showed Najib had done any wrong.

23. Bank Negara appealed but this was brushed aside.

24. The new attorney-general also dismissed another report by the MACC. The contents of the report are not revealed and threats are made against revealing its contents.

25. The new attorney-general has, without valid explanations, dismissed the recommendations of the two institutions that possess the powers and expertise in their areas.

26. That dismissal prevented the matter from being determined by a court of law after all the evidence was evaluated. By doing that, the attorney-general has acted as prosecutor and judge. Due process and the rule of law has been denied.

27. The sacked deputy prime minister later revealed that the former attorney-general has shown him proof of Najib's wrongdoings relating to the scandals. At the same time, various foreign government agencies, namely from Switzerland, the United States, Hong Kong and Britain have initiated investigations on the 1MDB.

28. The press in Malaysia is heavily censored so that Malaysians have to rely on the foreign press. Yet when Malaysians discuss or write about the foreign press reports, the government (inspector-general of police) invited people to make police reports so that the police can carry out questioning and investigations against the person concerned.

29. This is in contrast to the failure of the police to investigate the police report formally made against Najib, Jho Low and the reports to the attorney-general by Bank Negara and MACC. The attorney-general even threatens to amend the law to provide for jail for life with 10 strokes of the rotan against anyone "leaking" government papers. This means that crimes committed in the administration can be hidden from the public.

30. The attorney-general claims that a part of the RM2.6 billion (about RM2.3 billion) has been returned to the donor or donors. Apart from this statement, no proof has been provided.

31. The people are suffering.

32. Najib's GST and increases in toll rates have increased the cost of living, forcing some businesses to close down and also causing foreign-owned industries to stop operations and relocate to other countries, creating unemployment.

33. Despite protests by the people, Najib joined the US-sponsored Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) which erodes our freedom to make policies and laws suitable for our country.

34. Today Malaysia's image is badly tarnished. Apart from being classified as one of the 10 most corrupt countries, Malaysia is now regarded as undemocratic. There is denial of freedom of speech and freedom of the press and people live in fear of arrest and detentions. Security laws are enacted to allow the prime minister (and not the King) to declare security areas where anyone could be arrested and detained without trial and tried under procedures that violate normal and fair criminal justice standards.

35. On the other hand, where errors are made in applying these laws by government officers, or where there is a blatant abuse of that power, the people are unable to hold them accountable. Whistle-blowers are harassed and punished instead of being protected. Other repressive laws are used to stifle free speech and the legitimate comment about wrongdoings. The fundamental rights enshrined under the federal constitution have become meaningless.

36. For all these reasons, we, the undersigned citizens of Malaysia agree and support:

a) The removal of Najib as PM of Malaysia through non-violent and legally permissible means.

b) The removal of all those who have acted in concert with him.

c) A repeal of all recent laws and agreements that violate the fundamental rights guaranteed by the federal constitution and undermine policy choices.

d) A restoration of the integrity of the institutions that have been undermined, such as the police, the MACC, Bank Negara and the PAC.

37. We call upon all Malaysians, irrespective of race, religion, political affiliation, creed or parties, young and old to join us in saving Malaysia from the government headed by Najib, to pave the way for much-needed democratic and institutional reforms, and to restore the important principle of the separation of powers among the executive, legislature and judiciary which will ensure the independence, credibility, professionalism and integrity of our national institutions.

There's been a new documentary produced by ABC Australia that has summarised the scandals, and its lurid details facing the current ruling couple of Malaysia. Even former PM Mahathir is in the interview - another first again for the country. Its about 45 minutes, but well worth the watch to understand the current situation in Malaysia

As part of the ongoing crackdown against citizens questioning his corrupt activities; one of the tools available (besides sheer intimidation) to the Govt/PM &Wife is the Sedition Act - an archaic colonial era law used only to stifle dissent and to silence and jail critics.

The latest to be charged and convicted is lawyer, political and human rights activist Haris Ibrahim (a Malaysian i greatly respect). He has been found guilty of Sedition for a speech he made, and is now facing 8 months jail. Luckily there is a stay of execution pending the appeal to the High Court.

This was Haris's response after the judgement:
https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/337987

COMMENT On Sept 5, 2013, I applied for a visa to enter Australia. That application was refused.

The stated reason: “The outstanding criminal charges concerning Mr Ibrahim in Malaysia, combined with his lack of employment in Malaysia, lead me to the finding that Mr Ibrahim does not genuinely intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the purpose of a visit only. In those circumstances, Mr Ibrahim lacks sufficient incentive to depart Australia in accordance with the terms of a subclass 600 visitor visa.”

The ‘outstanding criminal charges’ was a reference to the charge under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act, 1948, in relation to a speech I made at the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on May 13, 2013.

The Australian authorities were concerned that I would not leave Australia and return to Malaysia to face that charge.

I made a second application. This second application was approved.

To allay the concerns of the Australian authorities as stated above, in an addendum to my second application, I stated, amongst others, as follows:

My present work, to take back our nation from a thieving regime and to bring justice, long overdue, to 40 percent of our people who have been long deprived of educational and economic opportunities, work for which I have given up the comfort of my previous lifestyle, is not yet done. I will not abandon my people.

My message to the people, time and again, has been that we must not fear the present regime, and must be prepared to face whatever they throw at us. It behoves me, therefore, to 'walk my own talk'.

As such, I do not propose to run away from my pending criminal charge and, if convicted, I will stay to serve out whatever sentence is meted out.

The trial of the sedition charge against me started late last year.

I am truly blessed

Yesterday, the trial judge convicted me and sentenced me to eight months' jail.

On the application of YB Gobind Singh, the judge granted me a stay pending my appeal to the High Court against the conviction and sentence.

I cannot say when that appeal will be heard. I also cannot properly say anything of the decision today, as it is the matter of the pending appeal.

What can I say? First, that I am truly blessed.

Throughout the course of the court proceedings, from the early preliminary stages right up to today, I have been represented by some of the finest members of the Malaysian Bar, who have given their time and energy in my defence.

Throughout, friends and family have been with me in court to give me support and comfort.

Thank you, all, and may God continue to shower you with His blessings.

I also want to say this. Now, more than ever before, our nation and her people need us. All of us. United as one people. Fearless. To do what is right.

There is much work to be done. I am with you.

Just saw this on the news, and the US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit;

US files lawsuit to seize over US$1 billion in assets allegedly stolen from Malaysia’s 1MDB

http://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/1992403/us-files-lawsuit-seize-over-us1-billion-assets
US federal prosecutors have filed civil lawsuits seeking to seize assets worth more than US$1 billion, allegedly stolen from Malaysian state fund 1MDB, which was overseen by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
None of the US lawsuits name Najib but they contain details that appear to directly implicate the prime minister. They include allegations that $681 million from a 2013 bond sale by 1MDB was transferred to the account of “Malaysian Official 1”, who is described in the lawsuits as “a high-ranking official in the Malaysian government who also held a position of authority with 1MDB.
1MDB and the Malaysian prime minister’s office had no immediate comment.
The fund’s advisory board was headed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and it is embroiled in multiple global probes related to allegations of money laundering and embezzlement.

I don't think the timing of this is a coincidence, coming right after the Hague ruling in the South China Sea - i think the Empire is trying to strong-arm the PM into following their instructions - and Najib really has a lot of dirt they can use against him. Malaysia also is claimant in the South China disputes - however the Foreign ministry is always engaged with China in dialogue on this issue - as China is also an important partner for Malaysia in trade & exports/imports.

Malaysia (similar to Singapore) maintains good relationships with both the US and China - having a very non-aligned foreign policy, and playing a very delicate balancing act between both powers. Now i guess the Empire is going to use this to change the balance.

Sott also referenced a good article summarising all the scandals the PM & his wife are associated with:

Just saw this on the news, and the US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit;

Hi Mr.Cyan! Thanks for the update. I was also conversing with a member on the specific issue. The DOJ filing is attached, which details how the money laundering was carried out.

This will put the Malaysian PM in a hard situation as he is compelled to face the truth of his actions. I wonder what may come of it. Also, what motivated the US government officials to file this lawsuit and expose the PM's wrongdoings? Was it only because of the south china sea islands dispute and Malaysia's relationship with China? It seems like they would need a very specific triggering event or action by the Malaysian administration to elicit this counter-action of filing this exposé.

The ABC video linked in the SoTT article gave me the creeps. It didn't occur to me to connect all those isolated incidents together to come up with that coherent narrative. His whitewashing campaign is really quite effective. Very good documentary, I have shared it around.

Thanks bm for posting the DOJ filing.

Managed to briefly read through it, and it is quite interesting the level of detail they have provided. I mean there are transcripts of phone conversations between the Malaysian Central Bank officials and other banks. Either they have had moles in all the banking organizations listed, or the NSA's surveillance is thorough and complete ( I think its more the latter).

With regards to the reasons for this filing, I am still of the view, that the Empire intends to put a lot of "pressure" on Najib due to their current "encirclement of China". Malaysia is still very much neutral, and there are increasing Chinese investments in power, and infrastructure - and they even stand a high chance to win the high-speed rail contract between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. If I recall, the Chinese are also allowed to use the Malaysian Naval submarine base in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (article below) which are very near the "disputed" Islands. Hence in a high stakes game, there are lots of avenues the Empire is using. I mean the Empire clearly does not care about corrupt politicians laundering money as long as they follow the Empire's will, its a more a case of who benefits by this move. Further they still very much back Anwar Ibrahim, and he is currently in jail, hence maybe additional pressure on PM Najib to release Anwar ?

Domestically, I think the PM has pretty much all law enforcement agencies "in the bag" hence I don't anything will happen, and he and his wife will continue rule in the near term. Lets see how the next steps play out, for im pretty sure there's going to be a lot of back room chats between Najib, and the Empire (and also the Chinese) - and his actions over the next few months will give us a better picture.

Yes, I guess we have to look at it this way. He has recently come out with a statement about creating a more vibrant and cooperative ASEAN community, so that could mean that he sees the importance of the ties among nations. Recently, this came out on the news, where a distraught archaeologist decided to plant a Malaysian flag on a coral island in the Luconia Shoals (this happened August last year), due to the fact that the Chinese Coast Guard were encircling the area and damaging the reefs via anchoring. Malaysia's immediate reaction was to remove the flag from the area, within the very next day in fact. It gives a great glimpse into Malaysia's relationship with China. It shows that Malaysia prioritizes their relationship with China over ownership of those disputed islands. I understand the dynamic a little better now.

The articles here chronicle the events related to Hans Berekoven's attempts to secure the Luconia shoals from Chinese military intrusion.

A good article by Andre Vitchek on Sott that i think accurately describes the current situation in Malaysia:

Malaysia humbly bows to US
https://www.sott.net/article/363497-Malaysia-humbly-bows-to-US

The headlines of virtually all the Malaysian newspapers have been screaming loudly and euphorically, since the 'historic visit' of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the US, where he met President Donald Trump. They were 'celebrating triumph', hailing high hopes, and swelling with pride.

'My gosh, the President of the United States really met the Prime Minister of Malaysia, face to face, during their 'four eyes only' meeting!

New Strait Times, on September 14, 2017:
"TAKING TIES TO NEW HEIGHTS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak hit it off with US President Donald Trump at their closed-door meeting at the White House. Trump says it is 'a great honour' to have Najib and his delegation at the White House and that he considers the latter a friend"
Such a statement is, of course, not too hard to comprehend, as Malaysia under the leadership of Mr. Najib has been lavishly 'rewarding' its allies in Washington (both the Democrats under Obama's administration, and right after that, the Republicans), buying influence all over the US capital, and supporting conservative political think tanks.

Malaysia Mail, on September 14:
"'Trump: Malaysia vital to US'. Najib: * EPF to invest in US infrastructure development * Staunch and dependable ally of the US in fight against terrorism. Trump: * Malaysia crucial trading and investment partner. * Major player in fight against extremism."
No public criticism of 'the event' is obviously allowed in the Malaysian mainstream media.

However, elsewhere, things are not as cozy at all. Both Trump and Najib have many enemies, and two of them together make extremely odd couple. The left is outraged, but even some extreme-right neocon figures are now shouting murder. In the U.S., there have been some loud outbursts of disagreements and even disgust, as this one, written by the former president of the World Bank (and staunch 'neocon') Paul Wolfowitz, who published his verbal blast in Newsweek on September 13:

"The Washington Post in an editorial yesterday said that the visit "sets a new low. Not only is Mr. Najib known for imprisoning peaceful opponents, silencing critical media and reversing Malaysia's progress toward democracy. He also is a subject of the largest foreign kleptocracy investigation ever launched by the US Justice Department."

The Justice Department suit in question seeks recovery and forfeiture of over $1 billion in assets alleged to have been purchased with funds "misappropriated" from Malaysia's One Malaysia Development Bank (or 1MDB), which the suit alleges is largely controlled and managed by someone identified as "Malaysian Official 1" - and who is widely known to be Najib.

In addition to his overall responsibility for the more than $4 billion of misappropriated funds, some $1 billion of which were laundered in the United States, "Malaysian Official 1" personally received $731 million, of which $620 million was supposedly returned, netting him a tidy $111 million."

Etcetera. Mr. Najib appears to be unloved at home, as well as abroad, by both 'progressive' and conservative politicians, as well as by the general public. It is mostly agreed that he is suffering from extremely low popularity, although the precise numbers are unavailable.

Unpopular or not, Mr. Najib and his UMNO are still controlling the country, and he has been tightly and warmly embraced by both successive administrations in the United States: those of Obama and Trump.

Many citizens of Malaysia are now chuckling. They feel embarrassed by their leadership, or they are anxious, or both. Some are even outrightly frustrated and angry.

An artist at one of the art galleries at Pasar Seni (Art Market) in Kuala Lumpur doesn't want to be identified, but he offered his opinion about the encounter of the two leaders in Washington:

"I believe that this government is too busy doing money laundering and buying support in the US. But it has no time and no appetite to solve many problems that this country is facing. Malaysia is in deep crises and Najib should be listening to his own people, not to those in Washington."

A leading left-wing Malaysian intellectual, author, filmmaker and professor, Kia Meng, explained the frustrating and persistent situation in his country:

"The biggest problem in Malaysia is the failure to conceive of any other model, not just in economic development, but in political culture. The mainstream civil society and political parties are mainly concerned about removing Najib as prime minister, and there are no qualms about working with Mahathir in achieving that end. Again, such limited horizons, and those who criticize are called cynics while these 'pragmatists' say that at least they are getting their hands dirty in at least trying to bring about 'change'. The question is why dissenters feel so unrepresented and where is the space for them to articulate other positions or visions? Sorry, I am angry at these developments, and am asking myself, what is there to be done? Where is the point of engagement in these times?"

Mr. Suhaimi, a consultant who lives in both Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta (Indonesia), sees the situation pragmatically:

"Najib is not popular in Malaysia... And the country has right now too many problems. Next year, in August 2018, there will be elections in Malaysia, and Najib is clearly seeking support from abroad."

President Trump is well aware of the fact that the West is gradually losing support in many parts of Southeast Asia. For the first time in modern history, The Philippines are openly rebelling against the Washington's diktats, while Vietnam is reassessing its policy towards the West, gradually warming up towards China, at least after the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong, got re-elected at the beginning of 2016. Even the perpetually obedient ally of Washington, Indonesia, has lately been showing some mild signs of rebelliousness. Thailand is extending feelers in all directions, and could go either 'east or west', at any moment.

Of all the 'important countries' in the region, what is left for Washington to rely on is only the rich and opportunistic city-state, Singapore... and lately Malaysia.

Gone are all those fiery speeches and philosophical books of "Doctor M" (former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad), in which he used to scold the West and preach 'Asian values', while instructing Japan to 'return back to Asia'.

Now Malaysia is full of praise for the West, and only the West. It is willing and ready to collaborate, to play by the [Western] rules. Remember those great moments of Malaysian history, the old slogans from the heady days of the liberation struggle against the Brits, a clenched fist and the shout: "Merdeka!" "Independence!" These are only sweet memories and nothing more, at least now, in 2017.

For the US, both Singapore and Malaysia are essential. These countries are sitting on one of the strategically most vital waterways in the world - the Straits of Malacca - and they are by far the richest nations of Southeast Asia.

Both Singapore and Malaysia are experiencing political problems, although to two very different degrees.

Now the White House is trying to rush to the rescue of the Malaysian leadership. The question is: would praise and compliments coming from one of the most unpopular political figures in the world - the President of the United States Donald Trump - truly boost support in Malaysia and the entire Southeast Asia for another highly disliked individual - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak?

It is definitely a great gamble. But both leaders are now fighting for their lives, using all means available!
