Another rally in Malaysia

"Pro Government" supporters are gathering in Kuala Lumpur today :

All you need to know about Himpunan Bersatu Rakyat's rally
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/312448

The rally's organiser - earlier shrouded in mystery - was revealed over the weekend as the Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan (Pesaka).

Pesaka, however, said its rally is to be called 'Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu' instead of the earlier name of 'Himpunan Maruah Melayu'.

Its president, Ali Rustam (photo), also said that participants need not wear red nor be Malay.

He said Pesaka, which obtained a permit to hold the rally at Padang Merbok, is holding the rally because Malay dignity was 'hurt' by the Bersih 4 rally on Aug 29 and 30.

Rough English translations of the Malay captions: "'Himpunan Maruah Melayu" - means "Malay Dignity Rally" - 'Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu' means "People's Unity Rally" - clearly doublespeak here

"Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan " - means national "Silat" organization, where silat is an old/traditional Malay martial arts

The government is trying to flare up ethnic tensions in multicultural Malaysia (something it has been doing since independence) - in order to deflect attention from corruption and various other scandals, including current economic troubles. Doesn't bode well...all they need is a real or "staged" event; and they can declare martial law, and retain absolute power in the interim - something PM Najib would ideally want considering all the issues he is facing. It has happened before in May 13 1969:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_May_incident_(Malaysia)

I guess a tried and tested method by the ptb - I hope cooler heads prevail today, and no incident happens.

A documentary produced by Al-Jazeera recently - on the ongoing scandal (for a few years now) surrounding the murder of Mongolian national Altatunya Shaariibuu, as she was connected in the "deal" to purchase Scorpene submarines by the Malaysian Govt from France. This documentary was released last week before this rally, again I don't think its coincidence. There is currently a big power struggle now between former PM Mahathir Mohammed and current PM Najib. Hence as always the people are being used as pawns, and will also bear the brunt of any fallout....sigh!

Thank you for keeping us informed a little about what is happening in Malaysia. I could be wrong, but I think the West will be supporting the current government, as Dr. Mahathir, the main opponent of Najib, has been very critical of the West and even held international war crimes tribunals against Western leaders.

So please keep us up to date with how this plays out, Mr. Cyan.

Thankfully at the rally yesterday, despite intense provocations against the ethnic Chinese minority in Malaysia, no major incident happened. The Riot Police known as the FRU (Federal Reserve Unit) - actually kept the situation at bay, and protected the Chinatown area in KL, against some protestors (or shall I say agent provocateurs) from getting in to cause trouble.

Some reports here:
Provocation, racial slurs mar 'red shirts' rally
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/312526

Despite senior Umno leaders taking over from grassroots hardliners in a bid to tone down the rally, it was marred by racism with abuses hurled at Chinese journalists and provocative banners being displayed.

The major target of the protesters was opposition party DAP which has now become a euphemism for the minority Chinese in Malaysia.

While the rally at Padang Merbok was peaceful, violence broke out at Petaling Street where a group of almost 800 protesters tried to force their way into the predominantly Chinese business district, popularly known as Chinatown.

The tense stand-off between police guarding the area and the protesters clad in red T-shirts culminated into the firing of a water cannon by riot police. Three police officers and several protestors were injured in the scuffle

The situation politically in Malaysia right now is tense, and even in the government there are clearly two factions; the for and against Najib (PM) factions. Hence observing the situation, it could possibly be that factions within the police and government that were against the PM, prevented any incident from happening; Or this could have all been orchestrated to just keep the fear of an actual racial riot ever present to deflect attention away from the growing autocracy that is enveloping Malaysia under the leadership of Najib and his wife (she is another story that deserves a whole separate post - truly a psychopathic individual). Just a sample of the things going on now in Malaysia :

MACC wants justice for Morais' gruesome murder
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/312508#axzz3lxbYJhh5

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has urged police to bring to justice to those responsible for the gruesome murder of deputy public prosecutor Kevin Anthony Morais.

Morais' body was discovered by police this morning in an oil barrel filled with concrete in Subang Jaya today.

"MACC thanks police for solving the disappearance of Kevin Morais.

"At the same time, the MACC hopes that those who acted cruelly and in an inhumane manner would be brought to justice," it said in a statement today.

Morais was seconded to the MACC for 10 years to assist in corruption cases and was returned to the Attorney-General's Chambers this year.

Kevin Morais was probing corruption cases in Malaysia - I don't think its hard to connect the dots.

Also, I agree, Najib certainly has the support of the empire against the former PM Mahathir that is trying to oust him. The previous poster boy of the empire and choice for color revolutions in Malaysia was Anwar Ibrahim - however it is clear now that in order to cement his power further, Najib and his wife looks to have firmly delivered Malaysia into the hands of the empire in order to entrench their grip on power. This is just my speculation based on observations; as the country's foreign policy has slowly started to shift away from its previous non-aligned approach. Plus, Najib was seen playing golf with Obama in Hawaii in December 2014, while the nation was experiencing devastating floods on the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia - talk about cosmic connection ! To the empire I guess this works well, and they get further control of a country that is straddling the Straits of Malacca, a key route in global shipping, and through which China receives most of its oil.

To digress a little about Anwar. I think in Sott has covered this before in:
Regime-change planned for Malaysia?
http://www.sott.net/article/255237-Regime-change-planned-for-Malaysia

Mr. Anwar Ibrahim is currently in jail, having been convicted of sodomy (it is illegal in Malaysia); and while his links to the neocon establishment may been evident to many Malaysians, he was embraced rightly or wrongly, and his opposition coalition received a lot of support - because he campaigned to make Malaysia equal for all ethnicities, and to review and possibly end the system of racial preferences in Malaysia. This resonated very strongly with the middle class, the large Chinese and Indian minorities and urban Malaysians, as a lifetime of living with constant racial policies, and reminders from the Malaysian govt had taken its toll; and that is why the opposition coalition and Anwar received a lot of support. In fact in the last general election, despite widespread allegations of fraud, the ruling coalition lost the popular vote 48% vs 52%, and only retained power mostly through gerrymandering, and having the most seats in the first-past-the-post Westminster system. One wonders what the actual support for the government was.

2013 Malaysian election results:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_general_election,_2013

Coming back to Anwar, looking back, I think the empire, as always was betting on two horses, and slowly started to shift allegiances towards Najib as well. This probably culminated with Anwar being convicted for sodomy and subsequently jailed (this was largely believed to be politically motivated).

More info on the trials in Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Ibrahim_sodomy_trials

The sodomy conviction, actually happened on the evening of 7th March 2014. To many Malaysians (my guess at least 50% of the population) this conviction, coming 1 year after the general elections where the government lost the popular vote, was like a final depressing nail in the coffin. Prior to this - they believed change was possible, and the country could move away from a racial system to a more equitable form of governance; and thought that it was possible to effect change through the ballot box. When this conviction happened, it was clear that it was not going to be possible in their lifetimes to change this state of affairs.

Hence a sort of collective "gloom" was in their minds. Malaysia in a sense is a unique country - because it is diverse and multicultural, and a post colonial construct - there are multiple narratives interpenetrating each other on what being Malaysian really is. This coupled with a government that constantly tries to divide the nation by race & ethnicity - generally makes Malaysians very cynical when it comes to politics and especially propaganda. Have a conversation with a working or middle class Malaysian (the country has a large middle class) and you will immediately know that government propaganda doesn't work, and they know exactly how corrupt the government is, and what they are up to. Hence it is like there is a constant and intense "mental battle" going between the people and the government. There are generally no political riots or violence in Malaysia, as the country is economically successful, rich in natural resources, and people generally have jobs, food and the necessities required to have decent life - mentally there is no "love" for the government.

When considering the factors and the collective state of the Malaysian psyche on the 7th of March 2014 - I don't think its a coincidence that a few hours later, in the early hours of 8th March 2014; MH 370 disappeared. Maybe states of strong collective mental duress coupled with the arrival of the wave can indeed increase dimensional bleed-throughs.

Well, just my thoughts fwiw...more updates to follow on this evolving situation in Malaysia....

Thanks thorbiorn - yeah it is quite easy for the ptb in Malaysia to alway stir the racism pot due to the multicultural nature of the country - this has actually been an ongoing cycle or Groundhog Day type "time loop" for Malaysians since independence (1957). Every time the government faces a crisis, and when their masks of sanity drops - and Malaysians start demanding change, fairer policies & transparency - a racial event is contrived, executed and the "clock gets reset". Seems like a never ending cycle - looks like only dramatic earth changes may change this equation....sigh!

Najib is clearly now gunning for this tried and tested method - and his latest doublespeak on the rally last wednesday :

Najib hails red shirt protesters for 'peaceful rally'
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/312795

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak thanked all who attended the ‘Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu’, saying the red shirts have done very well to gather peacefully and without any provocation.

Najib said there are no sighting of racist signboards or provocative acts such as stomping on opposition leaders’ pictures.

"The police told me that the rally showed that Malays respected the law and convened peacefully. Congratulations to everyone who attended the 16 September rally," he told 15,000 silat (Malay martial arts) practitioners who convened at the National Silat Merdeka Gathering at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, tonight.

"Are there any banners promoting hatred to other races? Are there any pictures of opposition leaders that were stomped? We are not like the opposition when they do street rallies. Malays know the country's laws," he added.

Najib did not mention the standoff between the red shirts and the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) on Petaling Street at the same gathering.

The FRU had used water cannon to disperse the crowd; two police officers and a protester were also injured in the commotion.

Bersih 'has gone overboard'

In his fiery 20-minute speech, Najib also demonised election watchdog Bersih 2.0, referring to their four rallies which he said was a 'slap' on the Malay face.

"They slapped us once, twice, three times, that's fine. But when they slap us for the fourth time, they have gone overboard.

"Malays too have the rights. Malays too can show that we can stand up when our dignity is torn apart and our leaders mocked and shamed," he said.

At the event, Najib also congratulated all the silat practitioners, saying they are among his supporters who are willing to fight to the death in upholding his government.

He also announced that silat is the official martial art of the country, and promised that the practice would be brought to all government agencies and universities.

"We are willing to die, not as suicide bombers. We are willing to die because this is the legitimate government to uphold this country. We believe in this government," he said to the cheering crowd.

As blatant as these doublespeak and manipulations are - generally the authoritarians in the country always fall for it, and troubles ensue...

Good op-ed on the current situation in Malaysia, from a former ambassador (Malaysian Foreign service):

Umno’s red terror gambit
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/312967

COMMENT When illiberal regimes lose their legitimacy, when they run out of excuses, when they feel their power slipping away, they almost always resort to scaremongering and scapegoating.

Suddenly, imaginary threats are everywhere. Everyone who does not toe the line becomes an enemy, an agent of dark unseen forces, part of some sinister conspiracy. All criticism, all dissent becomes seditious, unpatriotic, anti-national, a threat to national unity.

The ensuing tensions then provide the context and justification for further repression and for increased curtailment of fundamental liberties. What’s left of democratic space slowly vanishes.

Is the same thing now happening in Malaysia?

Najib’s red guards

Trapped in an increasingly untenable position over the massive 1MDB corruption scandal, Prime Minister Najib Razak and a close coterie of advisers appear to have adopted a strategy of trying to divert attention away from their own failures by playing up racial and religious issues, stoking fear and division and releasing their own version of the “red guards” to intimidate and terrorise.

With the connivance of the official media, old racist canards about the Chinese - that they are selfish, self-centred, ungrateful, money-grabbing, disloyal, unpatriotic, racist, disrespectful of Malays and Islam, that they control the economy, that they are blocking the progress of the Malays, etc. - are being highlighted once again.

What the red shirts, and by extension Umno, appear to be selling is the preposterous notion that despite decades of endemic corruption, abuse of power, mismanagement of the economy, fiscal irresponsibility and the degrading of our national institutions under Umno rule, it’s the Chinese who are really to blame for all the nation’s problems.

And the DAP, despite its multiracial character (it is in fact far more multiracial than any BN party) is somehow the chief villain, spearheading a sinister Chinese plot to overthrow the government, seize power and marginalise the Malay community.

Anyone who knows anything about Malaysia and the overwhelming control that Umno exercises over almost every single national institution, over every single lever of state power, will know how utterly asinine such a view is.

It is so absurd that surely not a single Umno leader really believes it but it is useful to confuse, distract and shift the blame.

The danger, of course, is that the red shirt mob will soon start believing the web of lies and deception they weave and take it to even more inane heights.

One senior Umno politician who was prominent during the red shirt rally, for example, went so far as to defend his racism by claiming that it is an Islamic obligation.

Has it come to this now when racism is worn as a badge of religious fealty instead of the disgrace that it is? Is nothing sacred to them anymore that they would turn a religion of peace and tolerance into an instrument of discrimination and hate?

Umno’s Malay problem

And all because the current leadership is feeling insecure and vulnerable, and worried about the real challenge to its power - not the DAP or the Chinese - but dissent within its own ranks and within the wider Malay/Muslim community.

Najib’s most dangerous critics, for example, come from within his own party.

Is any one more of a thorn in Najib’s side than former prime minister and Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad? Is any one more wary of Najib than his own deputy Muhyiddin Yassin? Has anyone been more aggressive in uncovering the truth about the 1MDB scandal than former Umno leader Khairuddin Hassan?

Mahathir is still revered within the Malay community and Muhyiddin still commands strong support in the south, so the party must proceed cautiously against them.

Several Umno luminaries like former ministers Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Rafidah Aziz, Zaid Ibrahim and Saiffudin Abdullah have all spoken out strongly against the racist turn that Umno has taken via the red shirts. Others like former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Idris Haron, the chief minister of Malacca, also appear to be increasingly uncomfortable with the party’s racism but again, it’s politically risky to hit out at them.

Umno is also losing ground to other Malay/Malay-led political parties like PKR, PAS and Amanah while more and more Malay NGOs, academics, professionals and student leaders are breaking ranks with the Umno narrative and speaking out. We’ve even seen senior government officers openly critical of Umno’s machinations.

The royals too, impatient and unhappy with the direction the country is taking, are growing more vocal in their criticism. One has only to read the alternative media to appreciate how widespread the dissent is.

Clearly, there’s a dawning realisation that after almost six decades of unbroken Umno rule, despite amassing untrammeled political power, despite billions of dollars in expenditure, despite lofty promises and great speeches, Malaysia is no where near where it ought to be in terms of living standards, quality of life and national progress.

While the cronies grow richer with each passing year, working-class Malaysians sink deeper and deeper into debt and struggle to make ends meet. They pay more for accommodation, for transportation, for utilities, for transport, for food and clothing and almost everything else because the economy is structured to allow cronies to exploit the citizenry with impunity.

Clearly, Umno has failed - it has failed the Malays, and it has failed everyone else.

Nazir Razak, the prime minister’s brother, summed it all up when he said recently, “I don't remember a time when just absolutely everything seems to be going badly for Malaysia.”

But all this, of course, detracts from Umno’s Malay versus Chinese strategy, and are downplayed or hushed up. Instead, Umno is trying to turn its Malay ‘problem’ into a Chinese one. And so it is that the DAP and Chinese Malaysians must bear the brunt of Umno’s failures.

Stage set for new round of repression

But make no mistake, though the ostensible target is the DAP and its supporters, the real victim will be democracy itself. With state-sponsored tensions now rising, the stage is set for a new round of repression.

Umno leaders are already calling for the re-introduction of detention without trial, censorship of the internet, further restrictions on the media and the expanded use of sedition and other laws to curtail dissent.

Ominously, Najib himself is now conflating calls for his resignation, something that is par for the course in other parliamentary democracies, with attempting to illegally overthrow the government, and warning of stern consequences.

Opposition parties, civil society groups and individuals fighting to defend democratic rights, transparency and good governance can expect to face increasing intimidation and persecution. Indeed, Khairuddin, who has been unremitting in his efforts to expose the 1MDB scandal, has been arrested on charges of attempting to ‘topple the government.’

At this rate, as national laureate A Samad Said (right) has warned, what is left of Malaysia’s democracy will be gone before the next election.

The only hope for Malaysia’s future now lies in the hands of moderate Malay political, economic and religious leaders, and the majority of ordinary Malays who occupy the middle ground.

What they do in the months ahead, how they rise to the challenge, will determine whether Malaysia will remain a “democratic and independent state founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people...,” as our founding father, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declared in his 1957 independence declaration, or just another morally bankrupt, kleptocratic, two-bit, third-world dictatorship.

I pray God will give them wisdom and courage to do what is just and right.

Your posts about Malaysia mekes it clear why Malaysia has not spoken up against the empire about the flight MH17, that Ukraine shot down. The leadership has soo much dirty linen that they are easily 'persuaded' to shut up and toe the emperial line. Besides the dirty linen, the multicultural fabric of Malaysia gives the empire plenty of material from which it can exploit grievances and 'divide and conquer'. If the ruler does not toe the line, a bloody color revolution is not far behind and the empire is quite happy to bring this point to the attention of the puppet in chief. Standard Operating Procedure.

Yeah, the current corrupt leadership certainly is blackmail-able, Aeneas. So that does shed some light on their lack of speaking up about the MH17 debacle. Thanks for these updates, Mr.Cyan.

Thanks for sharing Mr.Cyan, here's another good article I ran into written by a Singapore-based analyst.

http://journal-neo.org/2015/09/06/as-scandal-mounts-largesse-keeps-malaysias-pm-in-power/

Since coming to power in 2009, Najib has positioned himself as a business-friendly reformer, preaching inclusivity and moderate Islam as he courted Western investment, distancing himself from his predecessor Mahathir’s adversarial relationship with Washington and activist foreign policy. Najib elevated political and economic ties with the United States and has supported the controversial US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, while carefully balancing and expanding trade relations with China.

Thanks ST and Aeneas, Indeed it is SOP by the Empire, and that is why Najib is just being "led" and told to follow the script now on MH 17 and various other issues, especially when he seeks legitimacy for his increasingly despotic regime.

As if on cue, we have this yesterday from the Empire's mouthpiece NYT :
Malaysia’s Leader, Najib Razak, Faces U.S. Corruption Inquiry
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/22/world/asia/malaysias-leader-najib-razak-faces-us-corruption-inquiry.html?_r=0

Maybe more "heat" from the Empire to ensure he tows the line; or something else is brewing, and they are also working both sides through supporting the anti-Najib camp. Wouldn't be the first time... or as Anthony pointed out, maybe this is more pressure on Najib to sign the TPP...

Some interesting events/developments in Malaysia over the last week:

First, we had the "Red shirt" agent provocateur Jamal Md. Yunos threatening a further riot in Petaling Street (Chinatown) in Kuala Lumpur if actions are not taken against the traders there selling counterfeit goods. This was basically an excuse to cause further trouble; as the provocations against the Chinese minority began on the 16th of September at Petaling Street.

What was so blatant, is that if this was any other Malaysian citizen, or opposition member saying the same things in public, he would have been promptly arrested under the various draconian laws that Malaysia has immediately. Hence it was clear this was again going to be a orchestrated event, and something was brewing....

Jamal warns of riot at Petaling Street if authorities don't act
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/313285

If the authorities fail to act against the counterfeit goods and foreign traders at Petaling Street, a riot may erupt at the iconic tourist spot in Kuala Lumpur.

Ironically, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos issued this warning outside the Ampang district police headquarters today.

"If the authorities don't act by Friday, I am 99 percent certain on Saturday, there would be a rally and a riot may happen," he said.

Jamal said he met with the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry enforcement director to highlight the demands of the group that caused a ruckus outside Petaling Street during the Sept 16 rally.

Then we had the US and its deputy Australia issuing a terror alert for Jalan Alor in Kuala Lumpur. Jalan Alor is a very popular street food centre in KL, where tourists and many Malaysians visit to sample the local delicacies. The restaurants there are mainly owned by the Chinese Malaysians OSIT.

US warns of possible terror threat in KL
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/313407

The United States warned its citizens to avoid Jalan Alor and its surrounding areas in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, fearing a "possible terrorist act".

It said this in a travel warning issued on its Kuala Lumpur embassy website.

"Based on credible threat information regarding potential terrorist act, the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur advises US citizens to avoid Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Alor and the immediate surrounding areas on Thursday, Sept 24," the alert reads.

Police sources said they are investigating but added that there is no threat thus far.

Malaysiakini found nothing untoward at the Bukit Bintang area, where Jalan Alor is located.

The area was filled with tourists as per usual, with minimal police presence.

The US Embassy warned that terror attacks have in the past happened on significant dates.

Muslims in Malaysia celebrated Hari Raya Aidiladha on Thursday.

The alert by the US Embassy was also circulated by the Australian government on its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

And then there was the amazing visit of the Chinese Ambassador to Petaling Street on the eve of the proposed rally (yesterday, 25th of September); and these were his statements :

Chinese ambassador visits Petaling Street on eve of rally
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/313484

Chinese ambassador Huang Hui Kang paid a visit to Petaling Street today on the eve of an anti-Chinese rally by Malay rightwing groups.

The rally is called in response to the authorities’ purported lack of action against traders who sell counterfeit goods there.

China is against all forms of terrorism, as well as racism and extremism which target specific ethnic groups, the ambassador to Malaysia said in a statement which he read out after his walkabout in the area known as Chinatown.

Huang said Malaysia was a country ruled by law, and therefore, everyone - regardless of ideology or stratum in society - must safeguard it.

"Nobody has the right to undermine the authority of the law or trample on the rule of law.

"The Chinese government has always pursued peaceful co-existence in international relationship and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

"But with regard to the infringement on China's national interests, violations of legal rights and interests of Chinese citizens and businesses which may damage the friendly relationship between China and the host country, we will not sit by idly," said Huang in his strongly-worded statement.

The diplomat visited the popular shopping area for about one hour along with the Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association.

During the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu on Sept 16, rally-goers tried to enter Petaling Street and after a standoff, the Federal Reserve Unit used the water cannon to disperse the red shirts.

Malaysia should maintain social stability

Regarding the warning yesterday by the United States and Australia to its citizens to avoid Jalan Alor due to possible terrorist attacks, Huang said the Chinese embassy in Malaysia will pay close attention on the matter.

"We sincerely hope that Malaysia will maintain its social stability to become a desirable tourist destination, rather than the reverse.

"I walk around Petaling Street, I see here everything is orderly. Business is booming and there are many international visitors, but more importantly, I see the Chinese getting along in harmony with other races. I am very pleased.

"We do not want to see such a good situation destroyed by any people with ulterior motives," said Huang (photo).

He stressed the importance of economic diversification and cultural pluralism in multi-ethnic Malaysia where the Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups have retained their own unique culture, religion and tradition.

"Multiculturalism in Malaysia brings about stable and healthy development in Malaysian economy and society, which is a valuable asset for all ethnic groups in Malaysia.

"Mid-autumn festival is near... I come here to visit the Chinese businesspeople, friends and other Malay friends in Petaling Street, hoping to signal that we want to have a harmonious festival," said Huang.

The red shirt rally has been reported by several overseas Chinese-language media, including China Times, Hong Kong's Oriental Daily, ifeng.com, and China's Sohu.com, as an "anti-Chinese demonstration".

Malaysia is China's biggest trading partner in Southeast Asia.

After this visit, Jamal was apparently arrested by the Police, and purported rally in Petaling Street was called off.

Well i don't think Malaysians can ever remember a time, when the Chinese govt has actually intervened in politics in Malaysia. This was indeed a significant event, and judging from the outcomes, i think there were some "forces" behind the scenes pushing for an event to would entail further racial trouble - which would play well into Najib's hands. This was likely prevented by a Chinese intervention in Malaysian politics...

Hmmmmmm definitely interesting times we are living in....

Thanks for another update, Mr.Cyan. Seems tension is mounting everywhere and particularly Russia and China are doing everything to calm things down.

Thanks Mr. Cyan for the update. Interesting "intervention" by the Chinese and good to know that they are seeing through some of the games being played., Malaysia is an important trading partner for China, but one could also see it the other way, that China is a key trading partner for Malaysia.

Ditto. Thanks so much for the info Mr.Cyan. It's no small gesture by the Chinese govt -- has any foreign govt ever commented on one of THE most sensitive and inflamed topics in Malaysian politics before (racism)? I think not?

Likewise thanks ST, Aeneas and beetlemaniac for the comments.

beetlemaniac, indeed i do think it was no small gesture as well. As predicted the government has responded negatively on this issue, but has stopped short of raising any diplomatic incident; similarly, the Chinese foreign ministry has stated:

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said Huang was visiting the Chinese community during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday that fell on Sunday, adding that it was a “normal” activity.

He said China did “not interfere in other countries’ domestic politics nor intervene in other countries’ internal affairs”.

“China and Malaysia are friendly neighbours, we hope that Malaysia can maintain national unity and stability and ethnic harmony,” Hong said at a daily news briefing.
China defends envoy to M’sia after comments on racism
www.malaysiakini.com/news/313775

I personally feel, that this "intervention" has many levels to it; and the key point being is that China is sending a message to Najib, sort of saying " we know you are siding with Empire due to your various corrupt dealings in order to entrench power - and maybe be even considering signing the TPP to move closer into the Empire's fold - and we are watching this closely, and will take appropriate actions". Hence they may not interfere in Malaysian politics, however the days of the Malaysian Govt. using minorities or other races as punching bags based on complete lies & hypocrisy are numbered.

Najib on his own can't really make an issue with this as well, as China is one of the largest trading partners of Malaysia. Most importantly what i think this intervention changes significantly, is that also for once the endless cycle of contrived racial events in Malaysia can finally actually be broken (maybe I'm being too optimistic here).

Thinking further this may be part of a deeper and more assertive role that Russia & China has decided to play in order to "stabilise" and help humanity and thwart the Empire's plans in the coming times. The lines on the sand have been drawn, and this incident in Malaysia is probably in keeping with this.
