Whirlwind between Rho and Pregnana (Milan): uprooted trees and flooding

A whirlwind struck in the evening of Friday, September 22, in the Nordmilano, particularly in the area between Rho and Pregnana. The disturbance struck around 5 p.m. It is now heading toward Lake Como and Switzerland.

The damage is extensive. Many trees were blown down and fell due to the force of the wind. In Rho it is a real carnage of trunks. Roofs of sheds have been reported to be blown off and flooding has occurred, as well as some tensile structures completely torn off. Shingles and fences have also flown. No injuries are reported at the moment. Rho local police, with 5 patrols, along with firefighters, carabinieri and civil defense, are monitoring risk situations and clearing roads of branches and logs.

In Rho, a section of Corso Europa has been closed. There are entire streets with uprooted trees occupying the roadway. Numerous cars have been damaged and have shattered windows. It will take weeks to clean up everything.

At least 6 dead after severe storms, tornadoes hit Tennessee, leave trail of damage

Severe storms that tore through central Tennessee killed six people Saturday and sent at least three dozen others to area hospitals, as homes and businesses were damaged in multiple cities.

Three people, including a child, were killed after a tornado struck Montgomery County north of Nashville near the Kentucky state line, county officials said in a news release. Montgomery County officials said another 23 there were treated for injuries at hospitals.

And the Nashville Emergency Operation Center said in a post on a social media account that another three people were killed by severe storms there.

A building collapse at a Nashville church sent 13 people to local hospitals, the Nashville Office of Emergency Management reported late Saturday night. The patients were all in stable condition.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A 4-month-old boy has survived after a tornado in Tennessee sucked him up from his family's mobile home, which was demolished in the storm.

Sydney Moore told WSMV-TV that when the tornado hit their home in Clarksville on Saturday, it ripped off the roof and lifted the bassinet with her son inside. Her boyfriend, the child's father, tried to grab the bassinet but was spun up into the twister as well, Moore said.

"He was just holding on to the bassinet the whole time, and they went into circles, he said, and then they got thrown," Moore said.

At about the same time in another room, as the wind howled, Moore decided to jump on top of their other son, who is 1. She grabbed the child as the walls collapsed, she said.

Moore and the 1-year-old were crushed under the trailer, but she said she managed to push them out.

They searched for the younger son for 10 minutes, and ultimately found him lying in a fallen tree in the pouring rain.

"I was pretty sure he was dead and we weren’t going to find him," Moore said. "But he’s here, and that’s by the grace of God."

All the family members survived with cuts and bruises, but their home and belongings were a total loss. Moore's sister has started a GoFundMe page to help them recover.

Three people were killed in Clarksville and three in Nashville by the string of powerful tornado-producing storms on Saturday.

Tornado damages homes in Greater Manchester as Storm Gerrit batters Britain

A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester, where a “localised tornado” has swept through the Tameside area, damaging about 100 properties and leaving thousands of homes without power.

Storm Gerrit, the latest named storm to reach the UK, has also caused heavy snow, high winds and rain in parts of Scotland, where fallen trees, branches and other debris have brought down power lines.

Flood waters have risen in areas across the UK, with 20 warnings in place for expected flooding in North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Midlands.

A further 124 flood alerts, where flooding is possible, are in place in England, particularly in the north and west. There are nine flood warnings and 18 flood alerts in Scotland, and one flood warning and 17 alerts in Wales.

Several train operators, including ScotRail, LNER and Avanti West Coast, suspended some services and advised customers not to travel on some routes.

The tornado is believed to have caused significant damage to homes in Stalybridge, Tameside. Greater Manchester police (GMP) said they received numerous reports about the incident at about 11.45pm on Wednesday and the force declared a major incident due to the severity of the damage caused and the potential risk to public safety.

No injuries were reported but many people had to leave their homes. Residents spoke of hearing about 15-30 seconds of a hurricane-like sound while trees were torn up and roofs ripped off.

A dozen states reported tornado fatalities in 2023, with the highest concentration of impacted communities being in the southern U.S. Mississippi and Tennessee saw the most tornado fatalities this year.

A year that produced about an average number of tornadoes saw a spike in deaths despite Tornado Watches being in place for more than 96% of this year's deadly storms.

According to a preliminary count by NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, 1,423 tornadoes were responsible for 83 deaths across the country.

During a typical year, the National Weather Service reports 71 people are killed by tornadoes – an average that has seen drastic declines over the last several decades.

A significant tornado outbreak in the spring and a severe storm system in December pushed Mississippi and Tennessee to the top of the list of this year's deadliest events.

In 2022, storms produced 1,143 confirmed tornadoes that were responsible for 23 deaths.

Despite an average number of twisters in 2023, hail and wind reports were significantly above typical values. Reports of hail were up 12%, and wind reports saw a 32% increase above the running mean.

The highest frequency of tornadoes happened during meteorological summer, which normally sees a lull in tornadic activity. June was the busiest month for these powerful cyclones.

Over half of all deaths occurred after sunset, reinforcing studies that long warned of the dangers posed by nocturnal tornadoes.

ROLLING FOR TORNADO SURVIVOR DESCRIBES ‘APOCALYPSE’ AFTER SAVAGE STORM DECIMATES MISSISSIPPI TOWN

Deadliest tornado of 2023

A multi-day severe weather outbreak that produced more than 33 tornadoes across the South, including an EF-4 that rolled through Mississippi, was the deadliest event of the year.

NWS meteorologists estimated wind speeds reached upwards of 195 mph as the tornado spun through rural communities such as Rolling Fork and Silver City.

After the storm, officials said 17 people were killed in Rolling Fork, and another six people perished in other communities across Mississippi and Alabama.

"It just looked like the apocalypse, like a movie or something," Rolling Fork resident Darren McGee recounted after the tornado struck. "It was just pitch black. Everything was dark, and then I could see the stars. The rain stopped."

Nearly 60% of the deaths this year involved manufactured homes, including many of the deaths in Rolling Fork.

Preview of 2024 severe weather

The outlook for severe weather during the spring remains complicated and will be dictated by the influence of El Niño or a lack of it in the Pacific Ocean.

As expected by the FOX Forecast Center, 2023 was not a year dominated by severe weather outbreaks. The new year could resemble the old one.

The spring severe weather season, which happens during the months of March, April and May, is typically the busiest period for severe weather as the jet stream allows plenty of warm air and moisture to stream north and aid in the instability needed for thunderstorms.

During 2023, La Niña was collapsing, and ENSO-neutral conditions were taking shape across the central and eastern Pacific.

Neutral conditions are known to produce middle-of-the-line outbreaks, with La Niñas tending to produce more historic events across the U.S.

The 2024 season finds itself at the same crossroads, with an El Niño that is expected to rapidly collapse through the spring and ENSO-neutral conditions taking shape by the summer.

Due to a lag in the change in weather patterns that are associated with a particular phase of the ENSO, it remains to be seen when the proverbial switch from El Niño-associated weather events to more neutral-associated weather events will happen.

The longer climate patterns take to switch, the more likely the country will be dealing with a docile spring severe weather season, like those experienced during an El Niño.

First confirmed tornado in Wisconsin in February reported just south of Madison, near Evansville and Edgerton

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado was spotted Thursday just south of Madison between Evansville and Edgerton, marking the first time a tornado touched down in the state during February.

The tornado was part of a storm system tracking across southern Wisconsin that has resulted in strong winds, lightning and hail.

The weather service said in an X post at about 6 p.m. that "this is a very dangerous storm; seek immediate safe shelter if in its path!"

Marcia Cronce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Sullivan, said a radar confirmed a tornado touched down in Rock County near Evansville before tracking northwest of Edgerton and dissipating in southwest Jefferson County, just west of Fort Atkinson.
