Still standing in the parking lot, we are able to see the famous Tour
Magdala. It was closed when we visited, so we were unable to take a
look inside. The thing that struck me about it was that, with its belvedere
that extends on the other side, it was very much like an "observation
tower" more than anything else. Certainly, the belvedere was noting
more than an open air terrace designed to enjoy the view.
Now, whether this observation was for nefarious purposes, or was simply
constructed at the whim of Abbe Sauniere, for his leisure, can't be
said for certain. But one thing that should be noted is that the Tour
Magdala is a lot smaller than one would believe given the wild claims
about it and its alleged construction costs.
