Gagging while Swallowing Fat

The Force is Strong With This One
Hi Guys,

I just wanted to share my experience with attempting to swallow any kind of fat (Wether it be coconut oil, bacon fat from cooking bacon, or rendered leaf lard which I've recently started doing from organic pork back fat from a local farm), I tend to have a gagging reflex. This problem doesn't seem to go away, but I've figured out a solution to it. and that is, to swallow the fat, I take roughly a tablespoon of fat in my mouth, but then take about 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar right afterwards. This allows me to swallow the fat without problems. So, No stomach acid re-flux or discomfort, and everything seems normal. I've been doing this for the last few weeks, and i have noticed an increase in energy, and better tolerance to lack of sleep.

I would like to ask here if there is anyone who knows of any potential problems with this method .. So far since i started doing this, I haven't had any issues with it, but i would like to be sure I'm not doing anything stupid to my stomach.

In my experience it takes some getting used to. Most people can't tolerate eating as is.

Have you tried mixing fat into other foods? Using liquid fat in sauces is a great way to get more into your diet. Fat bombs are also pretty ingenious.

Do you have difficulty eating the fat on a steak? Or fat in bacon? Or crackling? There are lots of ways to ease yourself into it, depending on your sensitivity.

Well when you first introduce fat into the diet directly, it is rather nasty compared to the foods we used to eat.

Using butter on your meat is a great way to get it down. As it becomes soft it's is rather palatable and blends in with the taste of the meat.

Or you could try to make some Fat Bomb or other desert like chocolate. And most of the time you couldn't tell there was any fat in there. Apart from the nice energy boost you get!

But do you dislike the taste, or is it just something you can't tolerate to swallow? How much have you been having, and what is your overall diet like?

And I personally used to mix coco oil in warm water so It could half melt and be swallowed with ease. So for now, I'd say just keep doing what your doing, but keep trying to get the fat intake in alternative forms. As it's not practical or that enjoyable compared to alternatives

(Edit - last paragraph)

Some thoughts:

1: Good quality meat has fat on it that is nothing like ordinary fat, and tastes very good. It is difficult to get such high-quality meat though, and the taste of the fat seems to change dramatically if it is removed from the meat. The best fat tastes like meat.

2: Same quality issues apply to butter, coconut oil, etc. If it's bad quality or was stored wrong it will gag you. Good quality fats may still gag you, but not as bad.

3: If good quality fats gag you, then it seems your body doesn't think it can accept fat. If your liver doesn't get bile where it needs to go, or your stomach doesn't fry that food quickly with acid, then you have undigested fat slopping around in your body and I think the body just doesn't like that and rebels. This is just my theory based on my experience, but I've never completely eliminated this problem. How long has it been since you've worked hard enough and long enough to make yourself very hungry and feel your empty stomach gurgle? This may be more difficult in ketosis, but I wonder if it is a necessary step in ketoadaption, for resetting the metabolism?

Here is a link for a chocolate fat bomb tutorial. There are also many ways to do this, to add certain flavours and sweeteners like stevia. Also swapping the fats around, possibly for butter or coconut oil; something that you enjoy and can handle.

It's great fun playing around with the ingredients and tastes, there is bound to be a combination that you love!

It also makes life a little easier to carry round with you, to work/day out etc. as it is a lot easier and looks abit more normal than shotting coco oil :)

Hi Mildain, I can't say I had the gagging reflex as you do, but when I first started eating alot of fat I found the texture very hard to get used to. I know my partner who was a previous vegetarian still finds it a little difficult to eat pure meat fat due to the texture. I used to hate the oily feeling in my mouth and the back of my throat. As Huxley said mixing it into things REALLY helps, and as Monotonic said eating fatty meat is also tasty.

Maybe taking a digestive aid half an hour before meals such as ox bile or betaine hcl would help. Is there any particular reason why you're having it in spoonfuls? I found that adding alot fat to guacamole is possible and makes the fat hardly noticeable, also as others have suggested the fatbomb is brilliant. Another thing you could do is add fat to bone broth and blend it up with an immersion blender. Or alternatively having a meat stew and adding lots of fat to that while it cooks :)

I agree with the others here. It takes time to get used to. Instead of trying to swallow spoon fulls of fat try some cooking. Bacon and butter with everything! Fat bombs are my favourite way of getting the fat I need and I've started making them into ice lollies. They are delicious!

lainey, i have to enquirer about this! Do you literally just freeze your Fat Bomb mixture, with no alteration, in ice lolly moulds? If so, what is the texture like - are they icy or do they go into a creamy ice cream texture like Mini Milks (hopefully you recall these, as i know your are from UK)?

Ive froze Fat bomb before to cool it faster after cooking for my meal, but it goes abit icy and hard.

If you cant eat the fat directly yet, use a egg yolk and mix it into the fat, this will emulsify it and form a gravy. For example, if you want to eat 50 g of butter with your meal, melt it first, add a table spoon of water and blend an egg yolk into it. You will find that the fat no longer takes on the consistency of fat, but is more like a creamy sauce. This will help while your body adjusts to the intake of fat. You can also try the fatbomb recipes and variations. You can also blend butter into drinks such as tea, coffee and cocoa.

Wow so many replies !! Thank you all so much for your answers. I am at work at the moment so I only have time to read it over quick. I'll respond, as I have questions to ask, when i get home.

Ok so the way I stumbled upon it was that I was following Keyhole and Thorns Excellent fat bomb tutorial video only I wasn't getting the heat right and was putting in too much water I think and I was ending up with soup so I decided to just freeze it on lolly moulds. I would have to say that they are as close to mini milk as you are going to get. It's awesome, they are creamy and if you leave it for just the right amount of time after coming out the freezer it's almost chewy.
What I do is:
2 blocks of butter
water (don't know how much, I just measure by eye but not so much that it covers the butter when melting, 200ml maybe)
9 egg yolks
half a vanilla pod
gelatine
xylitol (to taste, I prefer to put in 15-20g)

So follow the usual routine, do it badly and you get this soup which freezes into some delicious vanilla ice cream! I was adding cocoa powder to get chocolate flavour ones but I prefer the vanilla.

LOL at the soup image in my head! That sounds brilliant though, im going to get some moulds and give it a whirl. Thank you lainey!
