The final moments of a Japan Airlines flight shows passengers screaming in terror before the aircraft explodes into flames. Five crew members on board the Coast Guard flight the passenger jet crashed into have died, officials have now confirmed.
All 379 passengers on board the passenger plane managed to get to safety, as well as the crew, after it landed in a huge fireball at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
Videos inside the cabin show those on board shrieking and standing up in their seats as it fills with smoke. One clip shows orange flames lighting up the wing, filmed from inside.
The flight landed on the runway in a terrifying stream of flames and smoke, before the entire aircraft melted in the fire, with dramatic pictures showing the empty shell of the aircraft burning.

Fire crews were immediately deployed to the scene in a desperate bid to extinguish the flames.

The Japanese Coast Guard has confirmed that the collision involved one of its planes that was headed to Niigata airport on Japan's west coast to deliver aid to those caught up in the powerful earthquake.
A spokesperson at Japan Airlines, the other plane involved, said its aircraft had departed from Shin-Chitose airport on the northern island of Hokkaido.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed relevant agencies to coordinate to assess the damage swiftly and provide information to the public, according to his office.
Haneda has closed all runways following the incident, a spokesperson for the airport said.

The hull of the craft broke in two as the fire raged.
The extent of the fire was so huge the runway also caught alight.

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reacted to the horrific incident.
His office wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that he would esnure officials "quickly ascertain the damage situation".
Above all, Kishida instructed to 'make every effort to rescue victims of the disaster'.

Major earthquakes, like the New Madrid Earthquake, can create “good EM conditions for breaching of the curtain” as the Earth settles afterwards (2018-12-22).

Part 2 is equally fascinating:

The head of the opposition political party in South Korea was stabbed as well:

Perhaps such chaotic energies were facilitated by this major earthquake.

We actually got hit with a 4.0 in Southern California at 9:00 this morning as well. Makes me wonder if it was the other edge of the “bowl” echoing in response so to speak.

Those look like small tsunami like events to me. I don't think how big waves and/or tsunamis form is very well understood. I would guess that besides earthquakes and landfalls underwater, things like small fireball impacts/explosions in and above water can cause it too.

The ones in California were freak waves more than 'tsunamis'. Another term used is 'meteotsunami', where 'something out in the ocean', maybe a storm, generates big waves. I also read that they coincided with a high tide.

Nobuhito Mori, a professor and deputy director at Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute, told CGTN that Japan is now highly unlikely to suffer a severe tsunami after the strong earthquake that struck Ishikawa prefecture on Monday. He said the Shika nearshore nuclear plant is safe but noted that rescue and recovery efforts are likely to pose a challenge over the coming days. Click on the video for more.

The death toll is now 48, and it looks like the quake caused major structural damage, flattening many buildings:
It's been reported that the land shifted for more than 1m towards West and at places rose 4m, that kind of movement could explain major damage.

The power of the magnitude 7.5 quake in Japan can be seen in just how much the ground moved.
It rose up by more than 4m (13ft) in places and moved sideways by over a metre.
Earthquake-prone Japan is hugely advanced in monitoring what happens when the ground shakes. That's why it can make such precise measurements.
There's a network of GPS stations dotted at strategic points right across the country. When an earthquake strikes, scientists can tell exactly how much each one has moved, showing how the landscape has buckled and shifted.
This system shows that the land moved as much as 130cm to the west after the earthquake on Monday.
Meanwhile, scientists have also been keeping an eye on Japan from space, comparing satellite images taken before and after the earthquake.

On its latest pass, the ALOS-2 spacecraft reported that the distance between itself and the ground had shortened as the Earth's surface had risen up under the force of the tremor.
The ground moved the most on the western side of the Noto peninsula. The ocean floor shifted off the coast there, generating tsunami waves of about 80cm in height.
Fortuitously, the uplift may actually have lessened the impact of the waves when they arrived at the shoreline. [...]

It's been reported in Crazy Storm Weather thread that several storm fronts and high waves were hitting West US coast since Friday.

Perhaps such chaotic energies were facilitated by this major earthquake.
There are definitely some aggravated energy patterns circling the planet at this time.

I was at the Southern Oregon coast last week when I saw the news footage of the waves crashing over the sea wall in California. A high surf warning was also issued where I was at on the coast.
More info about the storm system:
The season’s first huge swell, propelled by gale-force winds across the Pacific Ocean, and a swath of low pressure off the west coast, combined with strong rains along parts of California, have created treacherous conditions. Evacuation orders were issued for Stinson beach in Marin county, north of San Francisco, and for parts of Santa Cruz along the central coast.

The Los Angeles-area weather office wrote that powerful cyclones over northern Pacific waters were sending 12-17ft (3.6-5-meter) swells, creating “tremendous wave energy across coastal waters”.

Yes, we had huge waves all along the coast, some sweeping across the highway taking out cars, people, and huge chunks of pavement. I saw one video from Santa Cruz (400 miles north) and heard people talking about as close as Huntington Beach (4 miles from here). They closed the pier here in Seal Beach, and there were a lot of spectators (morons) standing near the beach. You could literally hear the waves slamming against the pier from inside of our house. Of course the really thrill seeking surfers were ignoring the lifeguard station and police saying to stay out of the water, beach closed. The last time we had waves this huge was in the 80s and half of the pier went down. It took years to rebuild, and they now have gates half way that they lock when conditions warrant. But yes we definitely had a pretty wild start for the new year.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will pledge to take stronger steps for the recovery of a central Japan region devastated by a New Year's Day earthquake when he delivers his policy speech in the upcoming Diet session, government sources said Wednesday.

He is expected to announce the establishment of a headquarters, which he will lead, dedicated to formulating and executing reconstruction measures in the wake of the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, claiming over 230 lives, the sources said.

In the speech scheduled for Tuesday, Kishida is expected to say, "I will be responsible for the restoration of Noto (region) and for the return of disaster victims" forced to evacuate from their homes, the sources said.

The prime minister will refer to the government's recent decision to double the reserve funds earmarked in the draft budget for fiscal 2024 starting April and vow to exert efforts with the mindset of "doing everything one can" for quake recovery.

The funds were raised to 1 trillion yen ($6.8 billion).

Kishida also plans to express his resolve to restore public trust in politics by increasing the transparency of political funds. This comes in the aftermath of charges against lawyers and former and incumbent accountants of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party's factions for misreporting revenues from fundraising parties over many years.

The scandal has dealt a blow to Kishida, sharply pushing down approval ratings for his Cabinet.

He will say that reviving the Japanese economy continues to be his government's "biggest mission," the sources said.

To this end, he will pledge to realize pay hikes for part-time and nonregular employees, as well as workers in medical, social welfare and public services and at small and medium-sized firms, the sources said.

On foreign policy, Kishida is likely to voice his intention to deepen Japan's relationship with the United States, including in the area of economic security, through his planned U.S. visit as a state guest, the sources said.

In the bitter cold of winter, many disaster victims remain stuck living as evacuees. It is necessary to resolve their uncertainty about the future. The government and the ruling and opposition parties need to work together to rebuild their lives and restore infrastructure.

The budget committees of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors held intensive deliberations on the response to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, “We will do our utmost to rebuild their lives and restore their jobs.”

The government plans to finalize comprehensive measures to support the affected people by the end of this week, and intends to decide to spend about ¥150 billion from the reserve funds of the fiscal 2023 budget as financial resources to back up the spending.

In the support measures, the government will include the construction of temporary wooden housing in addition to prefabricated housing to provide a better living environment. A subsidy program will also be included for small and midsize businesses involved in tourism, fishing and other industries to restore their facilities.

It is vital to continue attentive support for the revival of afflicted areas in and around the Noto Peninsula.

During the intensive deliberations, the ruling and opposition parties made proposals based on the actual conditions in the affected areas, and constructive exchanges took place as well.

In order to receive public assistance, affected people need a disaster victim certificate that indicates the extent of damage to their houses. However, in some areas, the issuance of such certificates has been delayed because local governments cannot keep up with the increasing number of applications for certificates.

In response to a request from coalition partner Komeito for simplification of the procedures to issue disaster victim certificates, Kishida indicated his intention to use aerial photographs to certify entire areas all at once as having been “completely destroyed.” He also suggested dispatching central government employees to various afflicted areas to speed up local government operations.

The most serious problem in afflicted areas in and around the Noto Peninsula is that running water has not been restored in eight cities and towns, including Wajima and Suzu.

Water is being supplied to a minimal extent by water trucks and other means, but this is not sufficient. Many medical institutions have stopped providing medical care services, and many fishermen have been unable to resume fishing because their ice-making machines do not work.

The largest opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, has said the restoration of the water supply must be the top priority. Kishida explained that the central government is mobilizing water service providers from all over the country to the affected areas.

The Ishikawa prefectural government has announced that the restoration of the water supply will be delayed until April or later in some areas. It is hoped that, with the help of water service providers in other parts of the country, the prefectural government will aim for a restoration ahead of the announced schedule.

Opposition parties called for a doubling or a substantial increase in the maximum amount of “support funds to reconstruct livelihoods for affected people,” which provides assistance for housing repairs and other purposes. This is because the maximum amount of ¥3 million per household has remained unchanged since 2004.

Securing housing is critical to rebuilding affected people’s lives. Also, compared to 20 years ago, building materials have soared in price. A certain increase may be worth considering.
