Life-threatening flooding looms for Southern California as dangerous atmospheric river approaches this weekend

California is in a brief respite from extreme weather after being impacted with the latest round of record rain and heavy snow Thursday from a Pineapple Express atmospheric river event. However, another potent, even stronger storm is already approaching from across the Pacific Ocean, with the potential for much heavier rainfall totals.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Los Angeles is already using strong language in its forecasts, indicating a significant threat for widespread and dangerous flash flooding Sunday into Monday.

"This is shaping out to be a life-threatening flooding situation, especially during the Sunday through Monday time period," the NWS said in their Thursday night forecast discussion.

What was it about california... california falling or under water?

California is said to: Going to fall into the sea. (From a spiritual perspective, you might say, it already has?)

Just talked to a friend from LA. While driving on the 405 the traffic signs had messages telling the travelers to stay in tomorrow and Monday due severe weather. Only travel if you must.

Dr. Daniel Swain makes a stunning claim on the current weather patterns hammering the West Coast.

Hmm, 🤔 the Cs made the same observation related to the subject of D.U.M.Bs many moons ago.

2) Extreme CA ARs in a warming climate will not only be more intense, but they may also have preferentially more southerly (deep subtropical) origins (like present one!). #CAwx #CAwater https://science.org/doi/10.1126/sc

3) Integrated vapor transport, a measure of AR intensity, may increase at a "super Clausius-Clapeyron" rate (>>7%/C), especially over Southern California! #CAwx #CAwater https://science.org/doi/10.1126/sc

4) Additionally, we also find that the most intense hourly rainfall *rates* within such extreme ARs will likely increase much faster than total precip accumulations--perhaps twice as fast! This is very important for flash flood/debris flow risk. #CAwx

5) As part of #ARkStorm 2.0 scenario research, we did find that climate change is dramatically raising the risk of a severe multi-week storm sequence capable of causing widespread, catastrophic floods (and has already doubled the odds!). #CAwater https://science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abq0995
GFnJSfwWUAAPmes.png
6) But, importantly, ARkStorm scenarios involve *much longer, more severe, and more widespread storm sequence than is currently occurring.* Good news? Feb 2024 isn't an ARK2-like scenario. Bad news? A real such occurrence would be much worse.!#CAwater

New York –
Many victims of the massive storms now battering California about are to be hit with another heartbreak – discovering their insurance won’t cover the damage.

The typical homeowners’ policy won’t cover loss from flood damage. That is covered by the National Flood Insurance Program, a part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. But in California, where drought, not flooding, had been the more common problem until recently, homeowners are about as prepared for flood damage as hurricane-prone Florida residents are for earthquakes.

RELATED: Main swath of Bay Area storm fury exiting the region

Data from NFIP shows only 52,400 homes and businesses are covered by flood insurance in the eight Southern California counties declared a disaster area because of this storm. That’s less than 1% of 7.7 million households in the affected area with coverage. Those counties have a combined population of more than 22.6 million people, according to the latest estimates from the Census Bureau.

Los Angeles County, with more than 10 million residents, has only 14,600 flood insurance policies in force. That’s roughly the same number as Lee County, Florida, which includes Fort Myers, and has fewer than 1 million residents.

Even some of those with flood insurance could find their policies won’t cover all of their losses. The federal policies have a limit of covering only $250,000 in damage to structures and $100,000 to the home’s contents. Those limits can be quickly exceeded, especially in Southern California. Homeowners can buy excess flood insurance coverage to match the limits of coverage on their homeowners policies, but many do not bother to do so.

Flood insurance can be required by mortgage lenders on homes in federally designated flood plains. But if an area is not judged to be at risk of flooding, there’s a very good chance that homeowners will not have bothered to pay extra for the flood coverage.

RELATED: Bay Area rain chart: Totals from 5 days of atmospheric river storms

That might be especially true for homeowners in California, who are dealing with among the highest homeowners’ insurance premiums in the nation, due to a combination of the high cost of rebuilding and the risk from other natural disasters, such as wild fires. Several major national property and casualty insurers have stopped writing homeowners’ policies in California, driving up prices.

Federal flood insurance is generally available to homeowners and business throughout the United States and its territories.

The NFIP estimates that more than 40% of NFIP flood insurance claims come from outside the high-risk flood zones. Damage in those non-flood prone areas are likely even higher given the lower frequency of coverage.

Atmospheric river: Three killed as record rainfall drenches California

At least three people have been killed by falling trees as a powerful storm drenches California bringing flooding, mudslides and power outages.

Fire officials have responded to over 130 flooding incidents and conducted several rescues since the deluge began.

Forecasters say heavy rain with life-threatening flash flooding will continue into Tuesday.

The record-breaking rainfall has led the governor to declare a state of emergency in eight counties.

The storm is due to an "atmospheric river" effect, a phenomenon in which water evaporates into the air and is carried along by the wind, forming long currents that flow in the sky like rivers flow on land.

It really does look like a river :scared:

Winter Storm Kayden Dumping Heavy Snow As It Moves Through The West
By Linda Lam 8 hours ago The Weather Company

At a Glance

  • Low pressure will track through the West midweek.
  • Heavy snow is expected in many of the higher elevations of the West.
  • Gusty winds in portions of the region will add to the hazardous travel when combined with snow.
It is still winter as the winter storm moving through the West reminds us. Widespread heavy snow will fall over a large area of the western U.S. through midweek.

The Weather Channel has named this next system Winter Storm Kayden due to winter storm warnings covering more than 400,000 square kilometers of the western United States, as shown in the map below.

Winter Alerts (Issued by the National Weather Service)

Where snow is falling now? The heavy snow had tapered off in the Sierra but has spread through much of the higher elevations of the interior West.

Areas as far east as North Dakota could see wintry precipitation today.

Timing of Kayden: Snow will increase across the interior West on Wednesday and last into Thursday. Gusty winds are anticipated into Thursday in the Southwest. Strong winds combined with heavy snow will result in dangerous travel conditions.

By late Wednesday, a mix of rain and snow will transition to snow in eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Snow will also develop in western South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska Wednesday night.

Snowfall from Kayden will come to an end Thursday night in the Northern Plains, but disturbed weather will continue across much of the West into the weekend.

Forecast (OpenSnow)

How much snow is expected? Snowfall totals of well over a foot will be found in the higher elevations of southern Utah, Arizona and southern Colorado.

Moderate snowfall is expected over a wide area from Nevada into Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Heavy snowfall has already fallen in California, with more than 30 inches reported at Mammoth Mountain. Another foot is possible in the southern Sierra Nevada through Thursday.

Lightning strike

Somewhere around 1999-2002 during summer in Stockholm City, Rålambhovsparken - a colleague of mine from the Green Line subway / Metro stood with his son in the park - which had pretty wide open spaces (see image) - got killed by a lightning strike. I remember it as such a surreal event. One day you see your colleague, and the next day - he is just gone. I think he wasn't more than 32 of age. :-(

On top, thunderstorms aren't exactly a big thing up here in Stockholm. I mean, they happen, but you barely remember them, because the more noticeable ones are rather few...

I assumed this would happen and it did.
The record for the height of snowdrifts has been updated in Moscow

Snowdrifts in Moscow on February 18 increased to 67 centimeters. This is a new record for this date, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, said in his Telegram channel.

According to him, the overnight snowfall added five centimeters to the snowdrifts. "The record for snow on February 18 has been held since 1966, when it was 65 centimeters in Moscow, and today it has fallen," the forecaster said.

He stressed that during the day the snowdrifts can grow by another one or two centimeters.

Another Round of Atmospheric Rivers Is on the Way for California

Beginning Saturday and lasting until the middle of next week, the state will see back-to-back storms that could bring several inches of rain and feet of snow.

Two weeks after back-to-back atmospheric rivers delivered powerful rainstorms up and down California, another series is poised to bring yet more excessive rain to the state over the next few days, potentially leading to flash flooding and deep snow that could make driving treacherous.

The first of the storms, which began Saturday morning and is expected to last into Sunday morning, should be relatively weak compared to the one coming immediately after it. That storm, which began taking shape Friday morning over the central Pacific Ocean, is expected to begin affecting the state Sunday afternoon and will last through the middle of next week.

A Rare Tropical Storm in the South Atlantic

Tropical storms seldom roam in the South Atlantic Ocean. But in mid-February 2024, one such storm formed off the coast of Brazil.

Akará is expected to remain well offshore and not have major impacts on land, aside from high surf along the coast south of Rio de Janeiro. Forecasts show the storm weakening as it heads south over cooler waters.

This is really crazy, I have never seen a storm that forms an angle before, usually they are spirals, right?

This formed in the North Pacific Ocean off the Auletian Islands. You can see in some videos a 7 followed by an arrow pointing to the mainland, in other videos you can see a 76, however, the 7 is evident. (Or double 7)

According to numerology, the number 7 represents faith, inner wisdom, spiritual awakening, intuition, and mysticism. It is linked to the idea of psychic abilities and reflects a deep connection with higher realms of existence.

A spiritual awakening is incredibly personal, and this means that it is different for everyone. However, most people agree that, when it happens, everything you know as true gets questioned. Angel number 7 meaning

The above reminded me of this session.

A: More to come. Just wait and see. Things are getting interesting and will move fast for the next several months as more and more people wake up to reality.

Q: (Andromeda) So people will be waking up.

(L) Does that mean people will be suffering more, causing them to wake up?

A: Indeed!

I think this is not very important, but it is fun.

Can you look back at those weather recordings to see if that seven or angle appears little by little, or appears suddenly?

A boomerang-type ship hides in the storm and when it leaves it leaves that shape, it occurs to me as a funny explanation.
