WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT APRIL 02_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A very strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in the North Pacific Ocean 128 km from Northern Mariana Islands. The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands with 48,000 inhabitants, in 137 km distance southwest. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. So far, only one aftershock has been recorded with M5.7 The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 7.7. It had occurred 83 years ago.

Estimated energy release equivalent to 30089 tons of TNT or 1.9 atomic bombs.The energy from this earthquake will move toward the Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska in the north, toward the Philippines region and toward the Vanuatu-Tonga region. A response to China or Central Asia is also possible.
