Hemochromatosis and Autoimmune Conditions

Hi everyone

I have a question....

I did a silly thing and gave blood just over a week ago, before I saw my doctor yesterday to arrange to have a blood test to check my iron levels. He suggested not to have the tests (includes tests for other things as well) for another six weeks.

The thing is, I really want to start a metal detox now. I've waited seven months, as recommended by Mark Hyman, after going gluten, wheat, sugar and dairy free. In the first four months I also waged war against Candida, taking Diflucan and Nystatin. I'm ready to start my metal detox but worry that I won't get a true indication of what my true iron situation is/was if I start detoxing now and get tested in six weeks. Or would I be able to sort of gauge by the amount others' iron levels have dropped through decanting and detox?

I'm cross with myself for not thinking it through properly as I would really like to know whether this could be an issue for me as I have Type II Diabetes, as did my Dad, his Dad and his two brothers (all of who died from Pancreatic Cancer). He also suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis from age 30.

Hmmmm, what to do? Should I just go ahead and start my detox anyway? Should I ask my doctor if I can get another test form for iron only and take into consideration that I decanted recently when I get the results? Should I just wait another six weeks before starting my detox? I wouldn't be dithering like this if I didn't feel that iron overload might be an issue. Or is it I am I just dithering unnecessarily - it really doesn't matter and I should just go for it anyway?!

Any comments greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Intriguing ... what form of Vitamin C do you take
I don't take any at all, or eat any food that contains Vitamin C. Supposedly I have a VERY rare genetic trait that lets me make my own Vitamin C from meat, especially fish and other seafood?

and what exactly happens when you take it?
A tiny bit can make me turn red and itch like crazy, a lot and I can't breath.

I was told that my very first bottle of OJ as a baby almost killed me, I had to be hospitalized.

Guardian ... this is VERY intriguing.

Do you have any more information on the precise nature of this genetic train? Does it involve the GULO "pseudogene"? How did you find out?

I am asking because the whole story of "pseudogenes" or junk DNA is quite interesting and lots of research is going on in this area. I don't believe for a second that junk DNA is just junk. And the GULO gene, which is the last step in the formation of vitamin C is silenced in humans, which is the reason we are unable to produce vitamin C from food, unlike most other animals which are capable to do so.

And that all reminds me of the following quote form the Cs ...

A: DNA core is as yet undiscovered enzyme relating to carbon. Light waves were used to cancel the first ten factors of DNA by burning them off. At that point, a number of physical changes took place including knot at top of spine. Each of these is equally reflected in the ethereal.

Made it into get my blood workup done today and as suspected the form scribble was only for a singular Ferritin marker and not the full workup. The lab was good enough to call the Dr.'s office, copy my form and said she would get them to change the workup. On top of that she handed me a stool sample kit (it was never described or provided earlier) and said I would need to fast and we can do all the tests later. Asked about where i can give blood and she said it was by "appointment only" and 300 km away - oh lovely. May well have to learn to self decant.

I see. The price is about the same as what I paid from one of the Amazon booksellers. I hope this place wasn't taking orders thinking copies were available when they weren't!

Has anyone asked Iron Overload Disorders Association about how to obtain the book? If not, I may do that when I have a chance.

Well that now seems a big possibility for the delay. Would think they would send a notice or something - will write them back.

My credit card shows that the book purchase was processed today (even though I ordered it about 3 weeks ago), so hopefully that means it is now being shipped. :)

I was taken to a lot of specialists, but I was VERY young at the time, so I don't remember much.

Supposedly, it's an OLD Scandinavian trait that let some people stay at sea for very long periods of time without any fruit or vegetables...just meat? I do remember being told I was a "throwback" Of course that's what stuck

That's interesting because if I recall correctly, it's an enzyme I make that most people don't have that prevents me from eating citrus fruits and such.

I have no idea what this means, but I do have a lot of extra bones too, vertebra, ribs, etc. I'm much more comfortable in the cold than most folks, my normal body temp is at least 2 deg lower than "normal" Don't know if that's related?

I emailed the people at the site where this book is being sold on Sunday, asking them if they were out of books, what was the cause of delay in people getting the books, etc. I haven't heard a thing from them. I, also, haven't ordered the book yet. I was waiting for an answer before doing so.

Thank you for emailing.

So I just got off the phone with the people at www.bookch.com and asked them if they knew the status of orders going out for The Iron Elephant. They said that they shipped out yesterday (from New York) and that people should be getting them in a week or so. I guess we'll see.

Did anyone order from another site?

Great news!

A good sign indeed. :)

When I ordered The Iron Elephant form the site, about 3 weeks ago, I didn't get any email notification of the book being dispatched although the payment had already been processed. Having waited for a week, I sent them an email asking if they had run out of books. They promptly replied saying that the book had been sent and sure enough I received it the following day in the UK. Not sure what the lead times are atm but I think that if the payment has been processed then they very likely still have it in stock.

I got an answer to my email. It says that they had run out of copies and that the orders have been mailed and there are, now, more books on the shelves for sale. :)

It would, however, have been considerate of them to notify people that this was happening.

I don't think you're dithering, they're good questions. At this point, maybe the best thing to do is just run an iron panel before you start the metal detox to see where you are now (keeping in mind you just gave blood, so it should be lower than where you were). At least then you'll have a starting point before starting the metal detox. Just my two cents though.

I agree with the above. Also, no need to be so hard on yourself IF, it's only by asking questions that we can help ourselves and others. :)

I did order EDTA calcium disodium from the suggested page nicklebleu wrote about _purebulk.com today.

They did send me today the money back without further notice, so I'm ordering the lesser evil edta capsules with maltodextrin to give it a try.

That's weird ... especially given their slightly aggressive advertisement style.
I was never a fan of Purebulk in the first place anyway.

There are other and probably better, but more expensive solutions.

Amazon.com is probably one of the best and iHerb.

If they don't ship to your country, you might want to use an intermediary shipping company, which basically gives you a US address to send to and then redirects your parcel to your home country.
I currently use ship2me.com to get tobacco from the US (half the price incl tax and duty).

:cool2:

Thanks, that's interesting to know. There is also _bestvite.com the brand Laura recommended from Amazon. They charge 12$ for standard international shipping but don't don't offer it on amazon, but I went for a standard product now to give it a go.

Signed up with a Doctor a week ago, and got my blood test results today.

Seeking to make sense of it – confused by all the different units quoted here in this thread.

Serum Iron level (X76tH) 14 umol/L (14 – 28.0)
Serum ferritin level (XE24r) 98 ug/L (23.0 – 540.0)

No iron binding capacity or transferring saturation tested.

Not sure where this stands re recommended levels quoted earlier in this thread, compared with range specified as OK above. Do I need to donate blood, or take supplements, or am I OK?

Due to the cost of the recommended book, I have yet to order it.

Fwiw the goal of serum ferritin should be around 50 ug/L as I remember it. At least you could give it a try donating blood?
