Photos: Migrant Brawl In Sprawling Tent City In Greece Hit By Heavy Rains

9 Mar 2016 - Startling images are emerging, portraying the reality of life in the many migrant tent city encampments that have sprung up along the Macedonian border with Greece.

Heavy rain and flooding hit the camps yesterday, which have seen brawls and escalating violence as frustrated migrants attack each other.

Around 36,000 migrants from the Middle East and North Africa are now be trapped in Greece, unable to move on to their preferred destination in Northern Europe.

Some of them have been camped at the border for weeks, since Macedonia began to refuse entry to certain groups on the 20th of February.

Around 140,000 migrants have reached Greece from Turkey so far this year, and another 100,000 are likely to arrive by the end the month, Europe’s migration commissioner warned on Saturday.

The so-call ‘Balkans route’ has effectively been closed off, as huge fences have gone up on the Hungarian and Bulgarian borders, as well as Macedonia.

Just this morning Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia announced they will refuse the transit of most migrants through their territory in a bid to further seal off the route.

Serbia will also being constructing a fence, and Albania is being sighted as the only possible country for leaving Greece.

Macedonia responded to the Serbia announcements, just hours ago, confirming its border is “completely” closed to all illegal migrants.

At talks in Brussels on Monday, the EU agreed in principle to a Turkish proposal to take back all illegal migrants landing on the Greek islands.

Turkey drove a hard bargain, doubling the amount of money previously promised by EU leaders to €6 billion and securing accelerated access to the Schengen free movement zone for its 75 million citizens.

The Refugee Crisis: EU’s Derisory Offer of $3.3 Billion to End Existential Migrant Threat

http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-refugee-crisis-eus-derisory-offer-of-3-3-billion-to-end-existential-migrant-threat/5513138

The sum offered by the EU to Turkey to better police its borders in order to prevent migrants leaving by boat for the Greek Islands and to forcibly bring back any who actually make the crossing, is reported to be just $3.3 billion.

Compare this sum to the $6 billion that the US Congress votes to the Israeli government every single year to fund its illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land, and one has a better perspective of the derisory sum that the EU is prepared to pay to ensure its own survival from an influx of millions of migrants who would very quickly overrun housing, education and medical facilities throughout the EU, leading to a potential collapse in the social and economic fabric of many of its 28 member states.

The figures seem to imply that the state of Israel with a total population of just 8 million is of more importance than the 500 million citizens of the EU, including Britain.

The explanation for the incredible sums of American taxpayers’ money being given each year to the Israeli state is that the amounts are voted by a US Congress that is subservient to the agenda of the AIPAC lobby and is apparently more concerned with helping Israeli dominance of the Middle East than it is in the welfare of its own electorate.

As for the failure of the European Union to agree on a viable migration policy, it is so bizarre that it would not make a viable film script.

"Cross my heart"

Erdogan promised to spend 3 billion euros from the EU to help refugees

http://www.interfax.ru/world/497827

Moscow. 10th of March. INTERFAX.RU - President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the EU is only talking about the allocation of funds for the needs of the refugees, and the real steps does.

"As they say, their problem is not in how to provide this assistance, and that will be after the delivery of such assistance. It has been 4 months, nothing was done. There was talk that the 3 billion will be received throughout the year. Let's see, whether the money received, "- he said at a press conference on Wednesday in Ankara, when asked about the relationship between Turkey and the EU.

Erdogan said that "the assistance that the EU has promised, it does not help Turkey's budget."

"Financial assistance in the amount of € 3 billion will be provided, which will be spent exclusively on the needs of refugees", - he stressed.

According to him, now we are talking about Turkey's assistance to specific projects.

"If there was this assistance, investment, experts from Europe have arrived in refugee camps, came back and decided to give what help," - said Erdogan.

As reported, on February 3, 2016 the European Commission expressed its satisfaction with the decision on the financing of the EU Refugee Fund by Member States in Turkey for 3 billion euros, which was proposed in November 2015 in cooperation with Ankara to tackle the migration crisis.

On the improvement of the living conditions of the Syrian refugees in Turkey, the European Union has allocated € 3 billion, which promised to translate for specific projects. Construction of temporary housing, health care facilities and public education for the Syrians in Turkey as well as the improvement of border management, should, according to the EU hold most of the refugees in Turkey and in Europe to reduce their flow. Ankara also pledged to intensify negotiations on visa liberalization and the accession of Turkey to the EU.

'We Pay for EU Mistakes': Macedonia Accuses EU of 'Careless Attitude'

http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160311/1036151271/macedonia-accuses-eu.html

In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov accused the EU of having a ‘careless attitude' in regards to his country, which has not received any financial assistance, although, according to him, it saved Europe" from jihadists".

Ivanov stated that Macedonia was constantly deceived by EU countries, but now has to solve the EU's problems on its own.

"In the refugee crisis, we are now paying for EU's mistakes. We already had to spend 25 million euros of our taxpayers' money […]. And what did we get from Europe? Nothing! Not a cent! Instead, as a non-EU country we have now to protect Europe from another EU country, namely Greece," Ivanov said.

According to Ivanov, Macedonia has faced a similar situation during the conflict in Kosovo, when the country accepted 360,000 Albanians from Kosovo without any assistance from the EU.

"It is not the first time that Macedonia has been abandoned by the EU in trouble, we've seen that! When we accepted 360,000 refugees during the Kosovo war, nobody helped us," the politician stressed.

Ivanov also said that Macedonian authorities have identified 9,000 counterfeit passports during border inspections. He believes that extremists are trying to infiltrate Europe under the guise of refugees. According to the politician, the current refugee crisis has both humanitarian and security dimensions, and Germany has shown humanity, but failed to ensure security for the European continent.

"Just one example: we wanted to share information on these jihadists with Europe, Germany, but nobody wanted our data. They told us: we can't work with you, you are a third country, and we cannot exchange information with you," Ivanov said.

Ivanov also stated that the EU repeatedly deceived Macedonia with regard to its possible membership in the bloc. The issue has been repeatedly discussed, but each time came to a standstill because of Greece's opposition.

Earlier, Macedonia and Serbia had closed their borders to undocumented migrants trying to enter the Schengen area. The decision has been supported by Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, but prompted criticism from German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Hundreds of refugees cross into Macedonia from Greece

https://www.rt.com/news/335534-migrants-macedonia-border-greece/

Hundreds of refugees and migrants from a camp in northern Greece have managed to get around a border fence and cross into Macedonia, according to a Macedonian police spokeswoman. However, a Reuters photographer estimated the number to be closer to 2,000.

After walking for several hours, the refugees crossed a river while forming a "human chain" and found a way around the fence, which was put up by Macedonian authorities, photographer Stoyan Nenov said.

Many of the refugees, who came from a camp near Idomeni, carried children on their shoulders as they crossed the river.

Greek and international volunteers used a rope to help the refugees across the fast-flowing waters, AP reported.

After the crossing, the refugees found a break in the border fence near the Greek village of Hamilo and entered Macedonia.

Some of the asylum seekers were picked up and put in army trucks by Macedonian soldiers, though it was unclear where they would be taken.

A spokeswoman for Macedonian police said: "We are taking measures to return the group to Greece...police and army have heightened security on the border at critical points."

Parts of the border fence are made solely of coils of barbed wire, while breaks in the barrier occur at rivers and mountain slopes.

The spokeswoman said she believed the number of refugees who crossed the border totaled "several hundred," a significantly lower estimate than the number given by Nenov.

Earlier on Monday, Macedonia's Interior Ministry said that two men and one woman were found drowned near the Greek border after days of heavy rain. The three were believed to be refugees who tried to enter Macedonia illegally.

Macedonia completely closed its border on March 9, leaving some 13,000 refugees stranded in Idomeni in desperate conditions. A total of 40,000 people are stranded throughout Greece.

The border closure by Macedonia and other countries – part of a domino effect following a move by Austria to impose a cap on refugees – has forced asylum seekers to "take desperate actions" because they have become "desperate and frustrated," a spokeswoman in Macedonia for the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

EU leaders and Turkey are set to meet on Thursday and Friday to discuss the curbing of illegal refugee flows from Turkey to Europe via Greece. The leaders are expected to seal a deal in which Ankara would take back refugees who arrive in Greece from Turkish shorts, including Syrian refugees.

In return, the European Union would speed up Turkey's EU membership application and Ankara's bid for visa-free access to the bloc for its citizens. The EU is also set to raise the €3 billion (US$3.3 billion) it had already committed to Turkey, in order to help it cope with the refugee crisis.

EU-Turkey Migrant Exchange Plan Must Be Implemented Quickly - Merkel

http://sputniknews.com/politics/20160318/1036499593/eu-turkey-migrant-deal-merkel.html

The EU-Turkey migrant exchange plan has to be put into action as soon as possible, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced after a European Council meeting in Brussels.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Late on Thursday night, EU leaders agreed on a joint proposal on migration to be presented to the Turkish prime minister on Friday morning.

Davutoglu will attend a breakfast meeting on Friday, the second day of the EU leaders’ summit currently underway in Brussels.

"We are not talking about weeks here, but this has to be done very quickly and what's absolutely indispensable is that once you have this return from the Greek islands to Turkey only a few days have to lapse until this resettlement process will be initiated, the Turkish Prime Minister [Ahmet Davutoglu] pressed this upon me," Merkel said.

Earlier in this month, Ankara pledged to take back all undocumented migrants that had arrived to the European Union from Turkey and send in their place documented Syrian refugees on a one-for-one basis.

"The offer that Turkey put on the table to end irregular migration through a re-admittance and return of the refugees from the Greek islands to Turkey…is a good instrument in order to end the traffickers’ business, but the necessary instruments have to be in place in order to make it possible," Merkel stressed, explaining that "each and every refugee has to be evaluated" and "every individual case has to be analyzed."

In return for Turkey’s help in tackling the EU migrant crisis, the European Union pledged to accelerate Turkey's EU accession process and introduce a visa-free regime between Turkey and Europe, as well as to provide a total of 3 billion euros (over $3.3 billion) to Turkey for dealing with the refugees. Ankara has requested 3 billion euros more in funding until 2018."There is a general readiness to put additional funds of the table," Merkel said.

Davutoglu told journalists in Ankara, before departing for Brussels, that Turkey was experiencing difficulties with regard to EU accepting its proposals.

German chancellor backs up possible EU-Turkey pact on refugees

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/18/456378/Germany-Angela-Merkel-Turkey-refugees-deal/

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended a possible, yet controversial deal between the European Union (EU) and Turkey that is aimed at stemming the flow of refugees from Turkey into Europe.

During a summit in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Thursday, EU leaders agreed on a unified stance to be presented to Turkey in upcoming negotiations on the possible deal later on Friday. The EU will want Ankara to take back all the refugees who enter Europe via Turkey in return for financial and political concessions.

Speaking after the summit, Merkel said the deal “will enable us to end irregular migration, so we can send the refugees back from the Greek islands into Turkey, and it is a good possibility in stopping smugglers and human traffickers.”
She also said the EU nations must be ready to start the implementation of the possible deal with Turkey “fairly quickly.”

“We did talk about this tonight. We will have to be seconded pretty quickly because we all know obviously that if the matters take too long, then it will indeed have this pull factor,” she said.

Merkel, however, said the talks with “Turkey won’t be very easy.”

“We did not set a date, but Turkey’s clear understanding is that within a few days of returns starting, the one-for-one resettlement (of refugees) should begin,” she added.

Last week, President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said Ankara had requested an extra three billion euros (Some 3.3 billion dollars) in return.

European Council President Donald Tusk will begin the negotiations with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu later on Friday, before a meeting where all EU leaders will be present to finalize the deal.

The United Nations (UN) has criticized the draft deal, saying it could lead to the collective punishment of refugees.

Meanwhile, thousands of people also took to the streets in more than 50 cities in Spain on Wednesday to protest the possible deal. They said that it would be in breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, and the Geneva Convention for refugees.

Addressing the concerns over the potential violations of the refugees’ rights, Merkel said in her Thursday remarks that the provisions of the deal will have to “take place on a very clear legal basis.”

An estimated 13,000 refugees are currently living in temporary shelters, which were designed to house only 2,000 or out in the open on the Greek-Macedonian border.

The refugees seek to travel from Macedonia through the Balkans to reach more prosperous countries in Western Europe.

The EU has moved to restrict its external borders, including in a visa-free travel zone, to stop the flow of the refugees.

According to a recent report by the European Commission’s bureau of statistics, the Eurostat, some 1,255,600 refugees reached Europe in 2015, with more than a third of them having gone to Germany. People from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan topped the Eurostat’s list of refugees.

Most of the refugees are fleeing conflict-ridden zones in Africa and the Middle East, particularly Syria. Many blame major European powers for the unprecedented exodus of the refugees from their home countries, pointing to Western interference in the conflict zones for an increase in violence and the subsequent departure of more people.

Another measure previously adopted by the EU to address the influx was to relocate the refugees who are concentrated in some of its members states on their route to other members. The plan, however, was met with strong opposition from some members, including Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Cold Shoulder: Norway's Rejected Refugees Dumped Off in Arctic Russia
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160321/1036670102/norway-refugees-russia-arctic.html

Syrian asylum-seekers who arrived in Norway via the Storskog border station, adjacent to Russia's Murmansk Region north of the Arctic Circle, have accused the Norwegian police of having lied about asylum interviews before driving them to the border and forcing them to cross back into Russia.

According to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, the country's migration police ejected a total of 371 asylum seekers from state-provided accommodation facilities in December, forcing them to cross the Arctic Circle into Russia in what came to be known as "Operation Winter."

The deportations came as a clear signal that Norway, which last year welcomed a total of 5,500 refugees via the so called Arctic route through northern Russia, did not want any more immigrants to arrive through its northern border. The flood of refugees has since then almost completely stopped, due to the tightening of border controls as well as cooperation with Russian state officials.

The rejected refugees claim to have been swindled. “Everything was secret. They deceived us. We knew nothing until we stood on the Russian border with the papers in our hands. We had not expected that of what we'd thought of as the best country in the world,” said Abdul Rahman Al Hessou, a Syrian refugee who now is in Saint Petersburg.

According to Aftenposten, the police had told the refugees that they were being transferred elsewhere to be interviewed regarding their asylum status; instead they were driven to the Russian border.

The refugees claim to have been deprived of their phones and were therefore unable to make contact with their lawyers, relatives or the media. The wireless networks in the Vestleiren refugee camp was allegedly switched off.

Some of the rejected asylum seekers say they were offered up to 20,000 Norwegian crowns (about $2,387) to abandon Norway and return to Russia.

Many of the rejected Syrians had also their passports stamped "expelled," making them appear as criminals upon return to Russia.

Several of those who Aftenposten interviewed said they were awakened in the middle of the night and “abducted.” One person said that during the trip to the border, he was given a letter from the Norwegian Migration Board UDI informing him about his rejection, and a few minutes later he was already in Russia.

NOAS, The Norwegian Organisation for Asylum Seekers, confirmed, according to Aftenposten, that the police temporarily confiscated the refugees' mobile phones and valuables, which they only regained upon arrival at Kirkenes Refugee Camp. Furthermore, NOAS has notified the police of ten cases of unlawful detention in Vestleiren refugee camp.

The Norwegian police immigration unit (PU) rejects the criticism.

‘On wave of migration’: Kosovo PM admits his brother, other relatives sought asylum in EU
https://www.rt.com/news/336410-kosovo-pm-brother-refugee/

Kosovo’s prime minister concedes his brother joined the wave of asylum seekers in the EU in 2015. Contrary to the expectations of 1.8 million Kosovars, the Serbian province remains one of the poorest entities in Europe.

PM Isa Mustafa said on Facebook that his brother Ragip and his children had tried to escape a doubtful future in Kosovo, which declared unilateral independence in 2008, and joined other Kosovars that infiltrated Europe through the so-called Balkan corridor. It was earlier reported by the Pristina-based Insajderi media outlet.

“I read that my brother was an asylum seeker to get medical help. This is true,” Mustafa’s Facebook page entry read.

According to Insajderi, Mustafa’s brother with the family managed to get into the EU via Serbia and Hungary before Budapest ordered the border with Serbia be sealed. Initially attempting to apply for asylum in France, Ragip Mustafa made another application in Germany in June 2015, Insajderi reported.

“On the wave of migration, I want to be open with you. My nieces and nephews also went, but they are back now. This shows that my family members also face the same destiny as other citizens,” the PM wrote, adding that his brother underwent surgery for an undisclosed condition in the Albanian capital, Tirana, in late 2015 and that “Now he is back in Pristina and his condition continues to be very grave.”

Although European nations offered asylum primarily to citizens of the war-torn Syria and Iraq, people from other nations that do not live under conditions of war, yet suffer from never-ending unrest and poverty, saw their chance to make a better life in the well-positioned European Union.

EU's 'Utter Failure' Evident in Greece as 5k Refugees Get Pushed Off Lesbos
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160321/1036669384/greece-eu-migrant-crisis.html

The port of Piraeus in Athens shows the "effects of Europe's utter failure to respond collectively and compassionately to people seeking protection," according to Human Rights Watch after more than 5,000 migrants were pushed off the Greek island of Lesbos and sent to temporary shelters on the mainland.

Piraeus, the busiest port in Athens is now home to the thousands of men, women and children transported from the islands with nowhere to go. Around 875 new refugees arrived at four Greek islands over the weekend — and a ferry transported 1,169 migrants to the mainland near Athens.

According to campaign group Human Rights Watch, over 4,000 men, women and children are sleeping in old warehouses, tens and under trucks. They are just some of the 44,000 people who are trapped in Greece following border closures along the Western Balkan route, where more than 10,500 people remain stuck on the country's border with Macedonia.

However, many more refugees and migrants are arriving in Greece with no idea about a recent deal struck between the European Union and Turkey stipulating that all migrants arriving in the country will be sent back across the Aegean Sea to Turkey.

Migrants flood to Idomeni on rumours border will be forced open

http://www.afp.com/en/news/migrants-flood-idomeni-rumours-border-will-be-forced-open

Hopeful refugees flooded back Sunday to Greece's overwhelmed Idomeni migrant camp on the border with Macedonia, creating confusion, after rumours that the closed frontier would be forced open.
The influx came as Greek authorities were trying to evacuate the estimated 11,600 people stranded in the squalid camp after Balkan states slammed shut the migrants' route into the European Union.

Dozens of hopeful refugees gathered on railway tracks at Idomeni and at the fence on the frontier, singing and waiting for others like them to arrive, as Greek police in riot gear stood guard.

A young Syrian refugee told the Athens News Agency that the rumour doing the rounds was that international journalists and Red Cross officials would help them force their way across the fence into Macedonia.

"We heard today that the border will open and we came here to cross the border," he said.

"They told us that Red Cross and 500 journalists from all over the world will be with us," he said, without specifying the source.

Another young Syrian refugee said his sister, who is living in Germany, read the same claim on the Internet and alerted him.

"People have been here for a long time. I think it's very dangerous to cross, especially for the children but what should we do?" 24-year-old Qasim Mosawy from Afghanistan told AFP.

Dozens of other migrants were travelling back to the Idomeni border through the fields, an AFP reporter said.

- 'Creating false hopes' -
"We are trying to step up our information campaign to the refugees. Some people for reasons we don't know are creating false hopes", Giorgos Kyritsis, spokesman of the SOMP agency which is coordinating Athens' response to the refugee crisis, said.

Two weeks ago, hundreds of desperate migrants were stopped by Macedonian troops after wading thigh-deep through a surging river to cross the border from Greece.

The migrants, who had set off from Idomeni, clung perilously to a rope strung between the banks to cross north into Macedonia, bypassing the closed regular border crossing.
Among them, three Afghan migrants, including a pregnant woman, drowned. The rest were stopped by Macedonian troops along with the journalists travelling with them and sent back in Greece.

"Macedonia will not allow reopening of the Balkan route," said Ivica Bocevski, a representative of Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov had said after that incident.

Greece, where the total number of migrants tops 50,000, is intensifying evacuation efforts at the Idomeni camp.

Eleven buses transported around 600 refugees from Idomeni on Friday and Saturday to other camps set up in northern Greece.
Those persuaded to board the first buses were mainly parents with children who can no longer tolerate the difficult conditions there.
But some are still holding out at Idomeni.

"People who have no hope or have no money, maybe they will go," said 40-year-old Iraqi Fatema Ahmed, who has a 13-year-old son in Germany and three daughters with her in the camp.

"But I have hope, maybe something better will happen tomorrow, maybe today," she added.

One of the Pegida organizers Netherlands Astrid Bello goes full Nazi stating that all Muslims worldwide should be round up and exterminated. Even suggesting that the infrastructure for total genocide is already in place. According to her Facebook comments Europe is filled with concentration camps from the WW2 Era, which as of today only serve as monuments. Despite the increasing hate-speech made by Pediga leaders. The protest group is only gaining more momentum.

Anti Muslim sentiment is growing throughout Dutch society.

The anti immigration/Muslim party PVV is a serious candidate if elections were to taken place and may even turn out as the victor.

Just like Pediga, party members of the PVV have also advocated for total extermination of the 1.5 billion Muslim population. PVV councilor Willie Dille of the City Den Hague suggested using Atomic Weapons and even made a video showing her devotion for another holocaust. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9NzjeiMkeo

PVV Party leader Geert Wilders isn’t shocked by the comments of his companions. On the contrary, in a recent tweet he shared the following : "I'm a firm believer in the separation of Islam and planet - share if you agree," Comments like this are shown to becoming the new 'normal' With terrorists attacks becoming more frequent some argue that hate and prejudices will eventually take over. If history ever repeats itself. The Extreme Right in Europe at least didn't made any secret about their intentions.
