To my knowledge, we have a thread dedicated to beautiful Mother Earth and to cute animals but none to beautiful art. That's the reason why I created this thread.

This thread could get very busy Pierre....

A first contribution from two absolute if contrasting masters.

SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE DARKNESS

As with his paintings, the life of Florentine Jacopo Carucci (1494 – 1557), usually known as Jacopo da Pontormo, is something of a mystery. Sadly barely a masterpiece of his survives from what is thought to have been a prodigious output. I suspect his work contained too many hints on too many matters best kept hidden. Anyway, the word unique barely does him justice...

SHEDDING DARKNESS ON THE LIGHT

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known as simply Caravaggio (1571- 1610) needs no introduction. He was a volient rogue with many enemies and so met an untimely death. His subject matter was often as gruesome as it was breathtaking, so whatever one's view of the man, has anyone ever painted better?

I really like a painter called Edmund Blair Leighton

He is the painter of this picture that was mentioned somewhere else:

I like the way he captured people and their lives.

You can find some of his work here and here. I'll put some of my favourite below:

I also like this one a lot but I'm not sure who the artist is:
