Suggestion for the Sott article:

One of the little-known chapters of history was the widespread famine in Iran during World War I, caused by the British presence in Iran. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Britain became the main foreign power in Iran and this famine or--more accurately--‘genocide’ was committed by the British. The document in the American Archives, reporting the widespread famine and spread of epidemic disease in Iran, estimates the number of the deceased due to the famine to be about 8-10 million during 1917-19, making Iran the biggest victim of World War I.

It should be noted that Iran had been one of the main suppliers of food grains to the British forces stationed in the empire's South Asian colonies. Although bad harvest during these two years made the situation worse, it was by no means the main reason why the Great Famine occurred. Prof. Gholi Majd of Princeton University writes in his book, The Great Famine and Genocide in Persia, that American documents show that the British prevented imports of wheat and other food grains into Iran from Mesopotamia, Asia, and also the USA, and that ships loaded with wheat were not allowed to unload at the port of Bushehr in the Persian Gulf. Professor Majd argues that Great Britain intentionally created genocide conditions to destroy Iran, and to effectively control the country for its own purposes. Major Donohoe describes Iran of that time as a “land of desolation and death”. But this event soon became the subject of a British cover up.

More info about the same: The Great Famine of 1917- 1919 is undoubtedly the greatest calamity in Persia's history that unfortunately has received very little attention. During this famine approximately 40 percents of Iranian population perished. The main factor for intensified and prolonged famine was financial and commercial policies of Great Britain, because at that time Iran was under occupation of Britain.

Book about the same: The Great Famine and Genocide in Persia, 1917-1919

About the book: As many as eight to ten million Persians perished because of starvation and disease during the famine of 1917-1919, making it the greatest calamity in Persia's history. In this book, Mohammad Gholi Majd argues that Persia was the greatest victim of World War One and also the victim of possibly the worst genocide of the twentieth century. Using U.S. State Department records, as well as Persian and British sources, Majd describes and documents a veritable holocaust about which practically nothing has been written. It is the first book in Majd's World War I trilogy.

Dear Sott editors, thank you very much for your efforts and all the valuable informations. :hug2:

Good find Eärwen

This is exactly how the British Empire mainly kept control over there oversees territories. Through famine and death. They only could keep control over there Empire so long when starvation and death was present. Nothing has chanced really. A unipolar world can only exists when the majority of the world is on it's knees and suffering.

Thanks for this! How terrible is to learn.

Hannah Arendt in her book about totalitarianism says that the British Empire was the worst of all the empires, worst then the French, the Japanese, the Soviet, the Chinese. Now I start to understand why. It takes time to learn, and it is very hard to learn. But wow. The magnitude of the cruelty of the British Empire is abysmal.

The British Empire left millions dead. In India, they were responsible for several famines. In 1943, 3 million people starved to death in Bangladesh, while the British hoarded grain and medical supplies for their already well stocked WW2 troops. Churchill is quoted in the following article as saying,
"I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion. The famine was their own fault for breeding like rabbits." Disgusting.

Thanks Eärwen, there's an article on it on Sott.net now: Documents reveal 8 to 10 million Iranians died over Great Famine caused by the British in late 1910s

That's crazy, and then there is the famine in Ireland caused by British policies which killed at least one million people. The British Empire was/is truly evil.

According to the Lancet, 19 million Indians died from "famine" (including various illnesses associated with starvation) between 1896 and 1902, under British rule, and during which time more than 100,000 tons of food was exported from the afflicted areas.

And another one is great Bengal famine of 1770-71 with 10 millions of people died of starvation, thanks to the British East India Company.
