Synopsis:
This Emmy Award-winning documentary by Jon Else tells the story of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, a national hero who became appalled by what he had achieved.

After distinguishing himself in academic fields, Oppenheimer was appointed scientific director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1942. It was in this remote facility in New Mexico that the Manhattan Project was based, a research and development that produced the world’s first atomic bomb. Code-named Trinity, the weapon was first tested in the desert on July 16, 1945. After witnessing its terrible power, Oppenheimer declared: “I have become death.” The accuracy of his grim assessment was displayed to the world the following month as atomic firestorms erupted over the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war was over and Oppenheimer was feted across America, but the principal architect of the world’s first weapon of mass destruction was a deeply troubled man. He became a passionate advocate of international control of atomic energy and argued against the development of the next generation of nuclear weapons. Featuring archive footage and contributions from friends, this film offers a fascinating look at the dawn of the atomic age through the eyes of those who best understood what they had created
