    ...are any "villains" (manufacturing history) it may just be the ones at the beginning and the end of the "Dark Ages". IE: the Flavians and the Carolingians. It sure puts "Dark Ages" into context. It's as if nothing worked and there was no ability to create any continuity for centuries in the west.
