I had work the day the shootings occured. I was late because I had to take a detour through another metro (subway) line to get to my job (I work night shift 3 pm to 11pm). I wasn't exactly sure what was going on at the time; I only saw a police officer telling me I couldn't ride the subway towards my work (I get on at one of the main stations, the one right next to the station connected directly to Dawson). I finally learned what was going on when I arrived at work.
It's pretty intense and everyone in Montreal is obviously shocked and upset. The media is predictably sensationalist and shades of Columbine-like absurdity permeate. The neocon/zionist rags Montreal Gazette and National Post are doing what they do best.
Personally it feels as distant as if it were happening elsewhere in the world simply because I knew none of the victims nor do I know anyone who goes to Dawson (my sister graudated from there a couple of years ago). But I still know Dawson and the area, I've been to Dawson (never attended thankfully), was personally affected by it (albeit, relatively mild in comparison to others) and so it's not the same as if this were to happen anywhere else in the world.
From what I've heard Dawson is like a high school multiplied by 10, in that you have cliques with a very demanding social pecking order...not unlike columbine. You had overwhelmingly rich, Anglophone kids (the school is in Westmount afterall) who looked down on everyone else. I went to a private Anglophone high school nearby where the vast majority where equally rich (roughly half to 2/3 of the students were rich Jews) and I had a miserable time so I am very happy I didn't go to Dawson. From what I've heard people are not surprised that it would happen at Dawson...of course that has little to do with the actual incident as you'll find out below.
I wonder if Dave McGowan will look into this affair because even from my cursory glance at the details, its fairly obvious that this was, like Columbine and Port Arthur, a staged event. The alleged gunner, Khimver Gill, was seen as a having a stone cold face with no emotion as he did his alleged deed (can you say Greenbaumed?). There are other things that make this equally bizarre. For instance, he never attented Dawson nor was he a student there so the choice of the target makes the motive unclear (even his diary does not reveal any motive). From what I've read it almost seems as if he was ALLOWED to walk around the school with his gun visible to everyone. Perhaps they were all in his bag but still it's weird that newspapers would make it seem like 25 year old man walking around in black trench coat with a powerful assualt rifle is a normal everyday affair.
Then there are the police that were already there. Mr. Gill walked past the police, was obviously aware of them, went to the atrium, talked with some students, then opened fire. Then he managed to empty out 3 guns before the police arrived on scene in a couple of minutes and either shoot him or he shot himself. Does any of that make sense to you? If you were planning something similar and cops were waiting for you at the entrance would you go ahead and do it?
Then there are allegations of a possible SECOND gunman, perhaps Mr. Gill's controller and/or murdered.
