It's important to note that this movie's director is Roland Emmerich, who also directed The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, and Stargate.
The plot follows the Quest of an archetypal Hero figure (as Campbell describes it in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces). Just this aspect alone makes the movie very entertaining, very much akin to LotR and Star Wars. The context in which it's set, however, makes the movie unique as it gives it an interesting twist.
As Deckard pointed out, the revisionist history aspect of this movie is phenomenal. Here's a few things that stood out for me that readers of this forum might find appealing:
- the evil pyramid builders are said to have "descended from the sky" or are the survivors of a civilization that was overcome by a flood (Atlantis?)
- they are a pathocratic minority that rule by fear, superstition, and by the establishment of an illusion of immortality in the minds of the less-civilized masses; their leader embodies a number of psychopathic traits
- the solution to the conflict against the pathocratic regime comes via networking, teamwork, and the dissemination of knowledge
I tried not to give away too much in the above, but I did want to say enough to encourage people to watch this film.
All in all, highly recommended - I liked it a lot!
