Not sure if people have seen this Star Trek type replicator printer. In this film an object, in this case a crescent wrench, is completely replicated on a printer; inclusive of working parts and even colours.

Strange stuff - fascinating, yet eery if though in context of some of the transcripts (to replace).

Interesting. Whoever added the music to that video, however, needs to take a Valium (or find another job). ;)

Incredible!

I saw something about this type of technology years ago but it definitely looks like they've come a long way since. Very impressive.

Yeah, me too. They were talking about being able to use it in space where it's kinda hard to get replacements for things that break. I didn't know that it had come this far, though. Very cool.

I came across those printers some time ago and wanted to buy one.
they are pretty expensive

You Tubes blocked at work.. :( can anyone tell me what I'm missing? or have any pics?
Hi chaps23,

A picture wouldn't really convey what a 3D printer replicator is. Perhaps you can bookmark this topic or the video link and watch it at home or outside your work place. Really cool video you don't want to miss.

Thanks.... Just make me more keen to watch it now... I no longer have the internet at home unfortunately due to this poor economy. Maybe I'll borrow a friends iPhone and sneak a peak.

can anyone explain how it works? I just started work an hour ago and I'm here for 10 hours a day so I probably wont be seeing it for a while.

EDIT: All good found someone at work who is able to help me out.... SA WEEEET!

Another application just reported, is replicating houses:

A Chinese company used giant 3D printers to make 10 full-sized, detached single-story houses in one day!

To remedy the housing crisis, as well as the increasing demand for economical and sustainably reproduced, living spaces, many architects are experimenting with 3D printing.

One such designer is Ma Yihe, the owner of the private firm WinSun. According to BBC News, WinSun managed to produce 10 full-sized, detached single-story houses in just ONE day – a monumental achievement.

Based in China, the company used four 10m x 6.6m printers to spray a mixture of cement and construction waste to build the walls, layer by layer.

The energy efficient buildings, as reported by Xinhua agency, can be produced for as little as $5,000 due to the lack of manual labor and cheap (as well as recycled) materials.

The innovative designer hopes that one day in the future, 3D printers will be used to construct skyscrapers. His ambitions will have to wait, however, as Chinese construction regulations do not presently allow multi-storey 3D-printed houses {or likely any other country} .

According to the news source, the 3D printers aren’t yet versatile enough to manage the task of applying roofs, so that aspect must be carried out be a team of workers.

On a positive note, the company intends on producing the cost-effective houses as a method for modernizing poor housing conditions in Chinese villages. While the technology will no doubt be improved upon in the future, the potential it already lends is exciting.

3D printed housing – according to some – is the kind of technology destined to fuel the advancement of mankind in a sustainable way. Already, the method is being used for manufacturing everything from jewelry and furniture to living, printed gardens.[/quote]
