4 month old baby prescribed Prilosec

On Saturday I stopped to visit a friend I hadn't seen in a couple of months. She has a 4 month old baby girl, and apparently the baby has been spitting up a lot of her food. She was breast feeding her exclusively but the doctor has now put her on formula because she isn't gaining enough weight. I was shocked to hear that the doctor has prescribed her prilosec...this just seems crazy to me. My friend is someone who wouldn't be open to much discussion about diet and health. I know there isn't anything that I can do, but I thought that I would share this with you guys. It just boggles my mind that they would put such a small baby on a drug that dampens digestion.

What would cause the baby to spit out food?

From a quick search, it would appear that it might be a minor case of reflux (_http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/bottle-feeding-9/spitting-up).

I would imagine that the mother's diet might also play a role (since it's breast-milk that's being spit-out).

Definitely a sad thing to see such a young baby already on medication...

I would agree that it's probably reflux. My breastfed daughter had a problem with it when she was an infant, too. Thankfully, it wasn't bad enough that she didn't gain weight. We actually took her to the chiropractor for awhile, and it really helped quite a bit. You said she's not really open to talking about diet and health, but maybe she would be open to a chiro?

It really is such a shame that the baby is being subjected to drugs so young.

That IS really sad! Insane world we live in.... A little less ignorance among the population, and SO much could be different. :(
