An earthquake in the Eagean Sea West of Turkey near the Island of Bozcaada has taken place. It was felt in numeous cities including Istanbul. It lasted about 30 seconds. I ducked under my dining table and waited. It seemed to go on forever. The time was 12:26 pm local time which is 3 hours ahead of GMT.

The island Bozcaada cannot be reached by phone as of yet.

It is still listed as a 6.9 magnitude by both the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the USGS.
Here is a summary of the seismicity of the region:

6.9 is more likely. It rattled West to east. The earthquakes in the Marmara Sea rattle the house in South- North direction. But this one lasted too long. You can imagine how I felt, having an earthquake phobia.

Everyday I check the latest earthquakes in Turkey and actually the Eagean sea had been very active lately and I was expecting a big one. There is also a big one in the making for the eastern part of Turkey.

The Eagean Sea is still rocking, first the east side then the West side. A couple of days ago a 5.1 quake struck at the bay of Saros near Çanakkale (Gallipoli).

The quakes (aftershocks or new quakes )are about 3 - 4 on the Richter scale. Our geology professors are still waiting for a big one on the western part of Turkey, like a 7.
