Today I had another confirmation of the "six degrees of separation" theory. I read a book a while ago from an author (Peter Godwin - When a Crocodile Eats the Sun) who grew up in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) who was there when they gained independance, but who had to leave recently since things got so bad.
While I read his book I wondered if I was connected to him through 6 degrees. So last night I was searching for podcasts relating to Zimbabwe, and found a website with loads of people giving their accounts of how things unfolded. The host of the show made a joke and said that he knows of only 3 people who listens to the show online and asked whoever was listening to send him a mail and tell him how they stumbled onto the podcast and what they think of it. So I send him a mail and he replied today and said that he knows Peter Godwin well, they grew up together. Isn't that amazing?
Last month we were at this Hotel, and the owner of the Hotel sat at our table the whole evening because he is friends with the director of our company. So during the evening it came out that he knows Bill Clinton, so according to the "6 degrees of separation" theory, I'm connected to George Bush with 3 steps (I know him, he knows Clinton who knows Bush). Interesting.
Do you have any interesting stories relating to this theory?
(Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. Six degrees of separation is somewhat synonymous with the idea of the "small world" phenomenon)
