a 1st article about controlling inflammation?

Hello all,

I have question to ask but first a will describe the context of the question.

Context: I was talking to an old friend from my days when I was going to drug addiction support groups. My friend shared with me that he had several herniated discs in his upper spinal cord over the course of a few months. During this time, he came to rely on pain medication more and more to the point that he thinks he is addicted to it. He is in the process of getting off of these medications.

In a few more days or weeks, if he is serious about finding a long-term, healthy approach to his pain issues, then he will need to explore avenues for controlling the pain and the inflammation in his body. As he is cleaning strong painkillers out of his body and still having back pain all the while, I imagine his thought processes are pretty darn foggy. I am looking for 1 or 2 articles of reasonable length that would serve as a good introduction to inflammation control. I don't want to give an encyclopedic list of resources just a couple of concentrated introductions to the topic. I think that is about all his mind could focus on right now.

I have read a good bit of the suggested materials about diet here in this forum and applied enough of it that I am convinced of the utility of these ideas, but I am not very conversant in them. So...

Question: Could someone suggest from one to three article-length pieces that would serve as introductions to inflammation control via diet, supplementation, etc? I am currently searching the SOTT archives, but some of you are so fluent in these topics that you might know just the gem I am looking for.

Here are two articles from SOTT about the use of DMSO for pain relief:

Also, "taping" injured areas help a lot with pain. There are many members that have tried it, including Laura, that have benefitted from it. Just do a search in the Diet and Health board for taping and you will get lots of information.

Although it applies to heart-disease/cholesterol more than chronic pain, there's a pretty good laymans explanation of inflammation in this article:

Again thanks... Those are all good examples of what I was looking for. I had actually picked some of them already. That's probably a good selection of thumbnail sketches of how to begin to direct one's thoughts on treatment of inflammation.

Vagus nerve stimulation, via pipe-breathing, is also anti-inflammatory:

Not that this device can be practically obtained by your friend, Patience, but it appears to be quite promising for many.
This is a device a mother invented to give her daughter pain relief after a severe car accident shattered several verterbra. It is a small box with wraps attached that emits laser and light diodes to stimulate nerves. Apparently it is the combination of these signals that makes it effective for pain relief.
