A pale young woman appears at the window of a ruined castle

The spooky snap was taken at a building hailed as one of Britain's most haunted.

And the shadowy girl appears to be on the first floor, in what used to be a magnificent banquet hall.

The floor in that room crumbled away years ago, meaning there is nothing for a person to stand on.

Company boss Kevin Horkin took the photo at Gwrych Castle in Abergele, North Wales, but only saw the ghostly figure when he downloaded his pictures later.

Kevin, 48, said: "I did feel a presence there. It was a cold day when I visited, but it seemed warm near the building.

"There seems to be a sense of tragedy there."

Kevin, believes the figure is someone who once lived at the castle. He plans to investigate further with a ghost-hunting team.

The North Wales Paranormal Research Group says many sightings have already been recorded at Gwrych.

The castle, built in 1819, has been derelict since 1985.

It's definitely an image of a woman! I just love spirit photos!

Reminds me of Royal Holloway, now a University in Egham, just west of London. A friend of mine who went there told me that the Castle is haunted; once a guy thrust a pen in his eye looking at a painting and another time someone cut through his/her hand with a knife for no reason whatsoever. Actually I just found a video of the first case. Really spooky!

The construction of the building began in 1874, and was completed in 1881. The building and the college were a £600,000 “gift to the nation” by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway. And designed by the architect William Henry Crossland, and known to be inspired by the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, France.

The Sun - not the most reliable source of information - just published an article about the possible identities of the ghost:
http:_//www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2855132/Is-Countess-the-ghost-at-Gwrych-Castle.html

A ghostly girl snapped at a ruined castle could be the spirit of a Countess who lived there, experts said last night.

Researchers think the spectre is Winifred, Countess of Dundonald. She inherited Gwrych Castle - hailed as one of Britain's most haunted sites - in 1894.

Locals in Abergele, North Wales, believe she fell out with caretaker Bill Price and haunted him after she died in 1924.

Bill would lock up the library at night only to find it opened next morning. Items had been mysteriously moved.

Ghost author Mark Baker, who founded Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, said: "Mr Price and the Countess did not get on terribly well. "Maybe their problem continued past the grave."

However, former photographer Harry Moffitt, 76, believes the ghost is a servant girl who died falling off a horse on the estate.

He saw the apparition on a visit to the castle 60 years ago and said: "I remember it vividly."

Company boss Kevin Horkin, 48, took the spooky snap of the castle - derelict since 1985 - but only realised there was a figure at the first-floor window later.

Floorboards beneath the window rotted away years ago, making it impossible for any human to stand there.

Here is a picture of Winifred, Countess of Dundonald:

We also learn in this website that

Gwrych Castle was built in 1819 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, grandfather of Winifred, Countess of Dundonald. Upon the site was an ancient house named ‘Y Fron’ (rounded hill). When Lloyd married Lady Emily Esther Ann Lygon in 1825, Gwrych was nearly complete.

We can find a picture of Lady Emily Esther Ann Lygon in this book (page 88)

The Emily Esther Ann person is a more likely candidate than the Winifred person. Of course, the servant girl thing is also a possible.

Yes. Emily looks a bit more similar to the "ghost" but not quite like her. My guess is that it is the servant girl or someone not mentioned on that website.

I say someone unmentioned too.
