a question regarding taxes

i was watching a movie called zeitgeist and in the third part they mentioned that there is no law requiring you to pay an income tax.if this is truse,then how can the IRS seize any of your posessions for not paying it or put you in jail?does that make what they do illegal? the reason i ask is because my boyfriend hasnt filed for taxes in the past couple years.he works building houses.even after claiming certain things work related such as gas,tools,and other things,he still 'owes' the IRS around 5 grand.neither one of us makes that kind of money.i mean we dont live in a box but we still struggle.im trying to understand how everything works on life and this movie has blown my mind.if there is no law to pay this tax,then he shouldnt have to work himself to death to hand them over his whole paycheck for the next 4-5 months,right?ive been stressed out about this as time goes on.

Hi kitty125,

Considering the large quantity of things the government does that are illegal, how do you think you as one person (not a large mass of people--different situation then) not paying taxes would work out eventually?

Also, Zeitgeist is almost certainly mentioned on this forum, so I'd suggest searching around for it.

The movie 'America: Freedom to Fascism' talks about the issue. Bottom line though is your boyfriend is going to have to pay the taxes or go to jail whether or not what the IRS does is right or lawful. At least one person that was interviewed in the film that I think worked for the IRS and then didn't pay taxes is in jail.

Hi Kitty125,

Unfortunately, it's the income taxes paid by the middle class that keep roads paved, water running, etc.. Without tax revenue, cities, states and the federal government wouldn't be able to operate and . It's unfortunate and unfair that nobody has the courage to force the wealth class to pay a proportionally larger share so the rest of us could afford our taxes, but such is the world we live in. In some coutries, like Canada where I am, you are able to go a few years without paying taxes (i believe they call it deferring taxes) to a maximum amount of years (like, 3 years), but you still owe it and the total owing keeps growing.

It would be wise to check with a tax specialist to find out what your best options are. Sole proprietors (owners of non-incoporated or non-limited liability partnerships) are able to write off portions of the home used for business as well as other tax credits, so a twx consultant might be able to find a lot of ways to knock down the tax owing. But, sadly, we have to pay Ceasar what is owed to Ceasar.
