Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood this is pretty interesting film which has left me with somewhat "haunted" feeling. Although it deals with depressing topic/s in some strange way it had an uplifting effect on me.
The main character happens to be homosexual but the film doesn't really focus on "usual gay issues". It rather transcends sexuality dealing with human condition, its meaninglessness, machine mode vs. moments of clarity, living in the past vs. living in present, grief.
IMO this movie is a school example how the visual component of the medium ( moving pictures) should be utilized when telling the story. Apart from using the color effects to accentuate the feelings or impressions the movie is also tasteful - as the main actor said about it : " What makes this film accessible to everybody is that it doesn't take you through any mechanics of sex."
Audio component was perfect too.
My favorite dialogue line:
Student: "I mean we are born alone and die alone. And while we are here we are absolutely, completely sealed in our own bodies. Really weird. Kinda freaks me out to think about it- we can only experience the outside world through our own slanted perception of it."
Professor: " You know the only thing that has made the whole thing worthwhile...has been those few times that I've been able to really, truly connect with another human being."
And here is a little teaser:
