I think it is a great story to read in these dire times and that such things still do exist, hopefully Johnny Bobbitt can really profit from it and make a new start.

After homeless man rescues young woman, she raised $160K to give him as reward

A homeless veteran helped a young woman stranded on a highway near Philadelphia by buying her gas with his last $20. She repaid him with more than just a thank you.

On her fundraising page, Kate McClure, 27, wrote that she got stranded on a highway near Philadelphia late one night when her car ran out of gas. It was dark and she was all alone when suddenly she saw a man approach her car.

A homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt, 34, offered to help Kate and went to get gas for her car spending his last few bucks.

"Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign. He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong," McClure wrote. "He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can," ABC News reported.

Later on Kate returned to thank him by bringing him gifts. But when she learned that Bobbitt was an ex-Marine and a former firefighter, she felt compelled to help him get back on his feet.

She started a GoFundMe page to share the story and raise funds for Bobbitt. So far the page has raised $160,000 in donations, far more than her $10,000 target.

Kate wrote that she would like to use the funds to help Bobbitt with renting an apartment, getting a car and covering four to six months' worth of expenses.

:), and the fundraising is still growing, now is $377,223.

A very moving story of gratitude! There is hope in this troubled world, one act of kindness can change lives!

There is hope for humanity yet! So nice to see kindness repaid with gratitude. Thanks for posting this :)

The story turns out quiet differently, but also not as a real surprise. Johnny Bobbitt didn't receive according to some news the full amount of money. Kate McClure and her boyfriend seemed to have had a good life with some of the money, for example buying for themself a BMW and living above some standards. They totally raised 400.000 $ and Bobbitt eventually got a maximum of 200.000, but the numbers vary. It is also said, that Bobbitt himself used some of the money again on some drugs and that he is homeless again.

Police raid home of couple who raised $400K for homeless Marine veteran

The question arises then: Was is it really of help to just to donate money? Because as the C's say there is no free lunch. Nonetheless it is totally immoral when the couple didn't give him the entire money, when it was actually his, no matter on what he spend it.

A great find Gawan!
I agree.
Target was $10,000. Why would he recieve much much more then he needed for a new start anyway? Seems kind of an unhealthy large sum of money to just fall in his lap. Even for a very balanced mind/person. And those donators should be more careful to whome they donate their energy/money to. It is good to help other people but maybe most of them just needed a quick emotional fix. Wishfull, uncritical thinking again.

Thanks. This turned out then in the total opposite direction and each one of them is a theft.

It's amazing how easily we are all taken in by emotional manipulation, isn't it? It was such a heartwarming story and then it turned out to be a total scam. A big lesson for all of us to really examine our reactions to things and hold off on making judgments as long as possible.

If it wasn't for the greed of the couple they probably would have gotten away with it too. They didn't pay the homeless man his full share and now all 3 of them will likely be convicted felons for the rest of their life and see jail time.

My thoughts are that this will really hurt people that sincerely need funds through GoFundMe for things like critically needed medical situations. It is a shame that there are people that take advantage of any system out there. Although with anything there are crooks ready and willing to take advantage of anyone. As Laura said earlier in this thread, “A big lesson for all of us”.

Yes, definitely it was pretty easy with all the pictures and the heart warming story behind it. Well, a good lesson indeed.
