Hello all, for some time now, I've been experimenting with Large Language Models for information extraction from session transcripts. As the transcripts are too large to fit into the model's context, the approach I've taken is the well-known map-reduce pattern.

The first step is to go through all the transcripts one by one with a prompt like: "Extract the information about [x] in the form of unnumbered bullet points. Return <stop> when there's no information to extract." For this, I'm using the DeepSeek-R1 model for its cost-effectiveness, tuned to avoid fabricating information (mainly 0.0 temperature). This step often takes two hours. After that, I'm merging all of the summarized bullet points into one big document and ask a final question. For that I take high quality model like Claude 3.7 Sonnet or Grok 3. The other thing is that models served via API don't contain hidden instructions like those for general-purpose chatting with public access, as business use often doesn't need woke opinions, but rather factual information extraction from the text corpus.

It seems to be working quite well. I wanted to post some results in this thread to avoid hijacking any other one. I'm open to queries from others, but the limitation is that the question needs to be focused on a single concept. Broad questions often miss a substantial amount of detail.

I've attached a document that was my first attempt at this topic - to generate a summary of each session using Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Maybe it'll be useful for someone, as I've spent 20 USD on API credits to reach the conclusion that this is not a good approach, since the summaries still don't fit within the model's context window.
