I read a short speech recently and want to share it with you. It addresses issues that still plague us generations after it's delivery; issues our leaders have either not had the intelligence and courage to deal with effectively or have willfully allowed to remain unresolved in service to some larger, hidden agenda: women in most of the world are still paid less than men; voting is under attack in the U.S. through arguably illegal voter roll purges; pastors still use their tax-exempt church pulpits to attack those they don't understand, fear or hate and invoke the words of this god or that to lend weight to arguments too silly to stand on their own merits.
The speech was delivered extemporaneously 161 years ago by an African-American woman. She used no notes, shooting from the hip by necessity because she was illiterate. Born into slavery as Isabella and sold at auction for the first time at nine years of age, she and a flock of sheep were judged to be worth $100. 'Belle escaped slavery in 1827 and renamed herself Sojourner Truth in 1843. By 1851 she had been entertaining and instructing for years, and still had plenty to say.

From 1851 to the Civil War, Truth spoke forcefully for abolition and women's rights. She thought both black and white women should be able to vote, considered a radical idea even in abolitionist circles. When friends suggested she take a weapon to speak before a hostile group in 1862, she declined:
She met President Lincoln in 1864, and, though a Lincoln supporter, didn't mince words when he showed he showed her a Bible presented to him "by the colored people of Baltimore," saying:
Attributed to Truth in the year 1867 are comments on voting, women's rights (threatened today in U.S. by the "war on women") and even the wildly futuristic notion of a woman leader:

She spoke publicly for as long as her health permitted, advocating against all manner of inequality. She was a proponent of prison reform and far ahead of her time in speaking out against capitol punishment. Near the end of her life, Truth had a comment on religion, saying:

I think that 'twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what's all this here talking about?
That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?
Then they talk about this thing in the head; what's this they call it? [member of audience whispers, "intellect"] That's it, honey. What's that got to do with women's rights or negroes' rights? If my cup won't hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn't you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full?
Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.
If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.
