From the ground, the Lacombe Corn Maze may look like any other field, but an aerial view shows the roughly 15-acre span is a little more high tech.

Every year, Kraay Family Farm, operated by Rachel Kraay, her husband and his parents, looks to find a new design for their popular corn maze.

“This is our 13th year of losing people,” joked Kraay. “You see those QR codes all over the place and we were kind of struggling with what to do this year. I saw one and thought, ‘that kind of looks like a maze, I wonder if we could make it into a maze?

After planting the crop at the end of May and cutting out the design in June, Kraay Family Farm is now home to what they’re hoping will be the world’s largest functioning QR code.

Kraay said they took a helicopter up on Monday, scanned the code on a smart phone from 1,400 feet in the air and were directed to their website, kraayfamilyfarm.com.

All the evidence has been submitted and Kraay said their waiting for the final word from Guinness World Records.

As for how they’ll top this year’s design?

“We don’t think about it until next winter,” said Kraay with a laugh.

Kraay Family Farm opens for the summer on July 27.

Lacombe Corn Maze facts:
While the entire corn maze is approximately 15 acres, the QR code itself is just over 7 acres, or 310,000 square feet.
Roughly 25,000 people visit the Lacombe Corn Maze every year.
