Alternative to cow's milk in coffee

I love coffee.

More accurately, I love coffee with a little cream in it. Now, I've weaned myself off the sugar, and even artificial sweeteners, thank the heavens, and the one time I tried it with Splenda since giving it up it was absolutely horrible and had to throw it out. That's probably a good thing since if I'm not mistaken Splenda is made from sugar...and chlorine. Nice combination!

I know that heavy cream has less casein than "coffee cream" or "light cream" (which are all variants that mix cream with milk) but I have trouble convincing the other folks in the house to use heavy cream in their milk. I certainly enjoy the heavy cream, but it seems nobody else does so I have to find a middle ground so I'm not breaking my budget on two kinds of products.

Any ideas out there?

I would try to wean myself off from it and just have from time to time. That way you could benefit health-wise and also budget-wise.

Have you tried sharing some articles about the topic? Perhaps they would be relieved to realize that saturated fat is good for you! I would make a search on "saturated fat" on sott.net and dig out some of the articles posted there.

If you're actually serious about the diet, and not just beating around the bush and trying to take shortcuts ( ;)), you'll eliminate both coffee and all dairy products until you can get your gut healed. Yes, it's difficult. Coffee is one of the hardest things I've had to give up (it is a stimulant, after all). But what you'll notice is that folks here gave this stuff up for YEARS before reintroducing them to test how they were handled by a healthy system. Just assuming you're OK with them because you don't have noticeable symptoms will not work. As long as you're still doing damage to your gut with coffee and dairy, you're not healing it. You may be able to reintroduce these things down the line, but without removing them outright for a considerable amount of time to allow your body to heal, you'll make little progress.

Hope that helps.

You can try coconut cream, or coconut milk. To keep the milk from 'splitting', it needs to be heated first. Put the heated milk in a cup then slowly add your coffee, stirring with a spoon or whisk.

Stevia or xylitol are two decent sweetners to try if you have to have one. I've used stevia for years without problems, but can't use xylitol at all. Many here have the opposite result: xylitol is fine, but stevia causes reactions. That's something to experiment with. :flowers:

Well.. coconut cream has a considerable amount of sugar too, i would suggest to forget the cream thing and have just a little cup of coffee with xylitol!

That's not what Lost Spirit asked for, is it? ;)

Just ditch the coffee and milk for awhile. If I can do it (the coffee fiend of all time!) you can do it.

I actually gave up coffee for a number of years and just in the last couple of months I've started drinking the organic stuff. I've been low carb for a few years (since discovering I was diabetic) and fairly strict paleo for over a year.

I just found I couldn't drink it black, as delicious as it might be :)

Put some butter or ghee in you coffee, if you really need one here and there

It tastes pretty good with butter, just make sure to use a lot of butter and run it in the blender until the coffee is light colored. If you have to have it, it`s really good this way.

I put coconut oil in my coffee if and when I do drink it. However I do not drink coffer near as much as I used to and coconut oil is not sweet so that may not be what you are looking for.

I don't eat or drink any dairy for some months and coconut milk is a perfect substitute for me. It tastes good and its quite nutritional. I use only natural coconut milk, make it by myself because store-bought canned milk contains many additives and is not so healthy.

Hello HollyWi & welcome to the forum.

Actually, seeing as this is your first post on the forum, we would appreciate it if you would post a brief intro about yourself in the Newbies section, telling us how you found this forum, how long you've been reading it and/or the SOTT page, whether or not you've read any of Laura's books yet, etc.
