Altruism goes bad

The Living Force
I just had one heck of an experience, and it seemed worth sharing.

I was leaving for work this morning at 7:45, went around the corner and there's this little hill before the highway. Well, the hill was icy (it rained last night and froze), and when I hit the brakes I started to slide. Realizing I was going to slide into the traffic on the highway I turned into the snowbank. Well, the truck lifted up and flipped over on the driver's side. So I'm sitting there sideways, gathering myself and figuring out how to get out of the cab, when I hear this scream. Looking out the back window of the cab I see a big guy laying on the ground with his arm twisted around screaming in pain. I thought I'd hit him!!

So I crawled up and out of the passenger door and some neighbors started to come out of their houses. Here's where the altruism had gone bad - the guy had gotten out of his truck to come and help me, thinking I was injured, and he slipped on the ice of the hill and broke his arm! He was a big guy and so the force of the fall had twisted his arm around.

Long story short the neighbors brought out blankets and we kept him warm until the ambulance got there. He's in the hospital now in surgery and it turns out he broke his humerus. I'm fine, no injuries, but this poor guy is going to be in recovery for months, essentially 'cause he twas trying to help me out.

*sigh* So, the point of the story being, I guess, if you're going to help someone out, make sure you've got footing before you try.

Way to think on your "wheels"! But that's horrible! Poor guy :( Is there anything you could do to let him know that his efforts were appreciated? Possibly visit him in the hospital and maybe get to know him or something, I mean you never know, maybe you can even be friends.

Such a terrible predicament for both you and of course that poor guy. What happened happened, but what happens next is the real issue. It is so easy to start the blaming game when misfortune falls upon us. Don't fall into that trap and I hope the other guy doesn't either.

Yep, he's in surgery for a little while, but I'm going to stop up there later today. I got to talk to his wife on the phone and say thanks and she said they've got insurance so everything is kosher except for the fact that he'll be recovering from surgery. I could also imagine that I'm not his favorite person right now, but we'll see how it goes.

No doubt. No there's certainly no blaming coming from my side, and I hope he doesn't feel that way, but ultimately what will be will be.
