The Living Force
Had this dream this morning.
I'm on the bus, and its clear I'm not me but some other guy in his teens and we're on our way home from school. The population of the bus is pretty normal high school kids, but then there's a group of about 5-6 kids who are dressed kinda funny. Their clothes are modern, but the have more of a Tom Ford look, cleaner cut, with a hint of Amish in there. The girls are wearing dresses, maybe a bonnet, and the boys are all wearing slacks and jackets.
I'm tired and I'm sitting next to my best friend, Bender. He's kinda an asshole, but we're loyal to each other and we spend a lot of time together. As my stop approaches, Bender grabs my arm and says, "Hold on, don't get off." That's when this big black kid (his nickname is Shrek) gets up and plops down in the empty seat in front of us. He turns around, and leans over the seat and Bender sells him sandwich baggy half full of pot. The whole time I'm freaking out because I want to get off and the bus is pulling away, so I'm a little erked that I'm going to haveta walk home. I'm also totally sketched out by the fact that their engaging in shady business on the bus of all places, with a millions witnesses.
I look at Bender, "Dude, what the f*ck?" He flashes a quick grin and tosses me a little baggy, "Here, your cut." I fumble with it due to my agitated nerves and quickly cram it in my cargo pocket. That's when I actually noticed what I was wearing. Big, baggy red UFO pants (used to wear these to raves when I was a younger lad), red-blue nike sneaks, a button up blue tee shirt with a white tank top underneath and a big heavy padded denim jacket.
The bus turns down a street and in my head I know that at the end of the road, where the next stop is, there's a dead-end and if I cut through some woods I can get back home with relative ease. This girl two seats up then starts loudly proclaiming, in the vaguest terms possible that "We all know what just happened here! On the Bus! Well, I for one won't name names but you know who you are and you should be ashamed!" Bender rolls his eyes at me and gives me a wink. I'm feeling totally called out and I start to blush and I can feel my body temperature rise a bit since I'm wearing all those layers.
The bus goes down a hill and I can feel it accelerate, I get that light-nauseated feeling as gravity pulls the large bus down this hill which seems to be getting increasingly steeper, I put my hand out and brace myself against the seat in front of me and we finally come to the bottom of the hill and rapidly ascend a small, short, round one and we practically launch off the apex and I feel that zero-G feeling as the bus barely loses contact with the road, and crashes down with a FRUMP and everyone jostles. That's when the bus driver pulls up to an old road which is barred with two orange pilars about 3' high bound together at the tops with a chain, the chain is insulated by a yellow piece of plastic. It strikes me as a bit odd because as long as I've lived I've known that road to be closed, but the pilars look freshly painted and the plastic looks new. The chain is also without any sign of rust or age. I notice the Tom-Fordies get off at this stop as well, and I get up and quickly leave with Bender giving me a wink and a nod as I walk out.
So I follow the kids down this road-path thing and they kinda look back at me nervously, with looks on their faces asking "why is he coming?" As if to answer them, I stated plainly that I was cutting through the woods to get home since I missed my stop, and that strikes their little group as funny. They don't really laugh, but more smile and nod to each other, as if they totally understand my predicament. Suddenly, its like I cross some sort of veil or barrier and everything changes. The air gets warmer, much warmer, and I have to take off my jacket and sling it over my shoulder. The quality of light shifts, whereas everything was bleached out before, the sun takes on a much warmer, softer tone casting everything as if it belongs in a movie. That's when I notice there's a lot more kids running around, playing some sort of game a little further down the road, and then I see a little mini village, with like 3-4 houses, a big barn and a few other out buildings I couldn't really discern. Before I realized what was happening I stopped my little foray home and I was walking with the tomfordies over to the buildings, I guess I was genuinely curious, I never really noticed this little village before, nor heard about it, so I was perplexed and interested that this was happening so close to my house.
"You all live here?", I ask.
"Yes", responds one of the boys, "We all live and work together. Some of us go to school and some stay behind to work on the farm or study their own interests."
"You're parents live here too?"
"Some do, some don't." Responds of the girls with a careless shrug, as if the question didn't matter. I stare around, awestruck and confused how this whole little mini-amish village could exist in my home town without my knowing, and we walk up to one of the main houses. That's when I see her. She's beautiful, blond hair, blue eyes, perhaps a smidge older then me, and she's walking over from one of the other buildings toward the house were heading to. She sees me and as our eyes connect its like we've known each other for years, she gives a gentle smile in greeting and I awkwardly smile back, feeling silly with the depths of my attraction to her.
As my little retinue approaches with me in tow she asks, "I see we have a guest," They all nod eagerly as if they were puppies getting patted on the head and tossed a treat, "I'll inform Mother and see that you have a seat at supper. You'll have to shower and change first, I'll have some clothes brought up. Why don't you wander around the yard for a bit, and I'll introduce you to Mother shortly." I smile back, as if it accept the situation, being totally content with whatever this beautiful vixen wants as long as I can be in her presence a bit longer.
My honor guard disburses and I wander out into the yard, tossing my book bag down by the main house, along with my coat, it's really warm here. Unnaturally warm, it was a chilly 40 something when i got off the bus, but now it feels just below room temperature, and I'm accruing a bit of moisture underneath my arms and on my chest. Some of the guys come over and toss me a football, I through it back and run around with them a bit, instantly falling into their little game. I notice everyone's fit, lean bodies, and handsome/beautiful faces. I feel like a human amongst elves out of one of my fantasy novels, and grin at the thought.
Beams of sunlight streak through the trees and motes of pollen are caught in the light, turning them into golden embers that just float through the air. The whole place feels magical, different, alive. I'm fascinated, and in the back of my mind a little warning light goes off telling me to be on guard, that something here is strange, perhaps dangerous, and I note the instinct as I catch sight of the girl from before walking over toward me. I toss the ball back to one of the blokes and meet her halfway. "I'm Amelia, welcome to our home." I don't remember telling her my name, but having the feeling as if she already knew it. "Come, I want you to meet Mother." We head inside and the place is well furnished. Everything looks hand crafted, made from solid wood. There's a stag's head mounted on the wall, and a large fire burning in the fireplace. I put my stuff down on the table and a door opens on the far side of the room, in strolls this other beautiful woman, but she has a more refined, stodgy air about herself. She obviously takes herself SUPER seriously. Three little white dogs follow her in as well, no higher then her shins. She's wearing a white/blue dress, which doesn't appear formal, but still beautiful and yet practical enough for her to do housework in.
"Hello" she states simply, her voice drawn out, as if the sounds remain in the air longer then they should. Her eyes strike me - their dark blue, with white tendons throughout, giving her an ancient, wise, knowing sort of appearance. Her face and the rest of her, however doesn't look a day over 35, and yet she carried herself like a much older woman. "Welcome to our home. This is my property and I make sure everyone her is safe and happy. You're certainly welcome to spend the night, dinner will be served shortly. Why don't you have a quick shower and change, that smell is unbearable."
I sniff myself and don't notice anything terribly unpleasant. The dogs come out from behind Mother and approach me with curiosity, being the dog lover that I am, I crouch down a bit and put out my hand. Mother says, "That's Tycho, Brahe and Moiler, they love to meet new people, we get so few visitors." As the dogs approach, they sniff and then start aggressive yipping at me as if I wear a threat. I try to calm them with a few soft words of greeting, but they remain irreproachable. Mother seems agitated with the situation and says softly, "Enough." Which silences the pooches and somehow shifts them back behind her where they started. "They don't like the smell of outsiders, I'm sure they'll respond much better once you've taken a shower. We'll see you at dinner."
And just like that she was gone. I was a little bewildered by the experience, dogs love me. They never respond to me like that, further I didn't even say anything, and why the hell was she thinking I was going to sleep over...
I looked at Amelia, "I'm not sure I can spend the night, I kinda need to get home."
"It'll be fun! We can talk politics and get to know each other a little better. Why don't you call your mom and let her know, and she can pick you up in the morning." It was a Friday and next day was Saturday, so I didn't see any harm. I was supposed to hang with Bender later, but I was still sore with him from getting me into this mess in the first place, so he could deal. After pondering all that shortly I said, "Alright, let me call her and make sure its cool." So I pull out my cell phone, make the call, let mom know where I'm at and she doesn't seem curious or otherwise concerned in the least, "Have a good time! It'll be good for you to get to know some girls!"
I hang up, and shrug off my discomfort. We go into another room and pass through a dining room where tables are being setup. Amelia points, "There's the bathroom, and here are you clothes." As she says it a young boy, perhaps 13 walks in with a short stack of fresh linens and hands them to me. I say thank you to the lad as he smiles at me awkwardly and buzzes away as quickly as he can. While we're talking and I'm gettting my fresh new tomfordie clothes I notice someone walk past us and hop into the bathroom. So I put my clothes down on the char with my other stuff and wait a bit. That's when I notice one of the guys setting up for dinner trying to move a table out of the corner, so I go over and help him lift it. There were some chairs arranged around it, and i was just going to lift it up and over, but when I touched the table it felt way lighter then it should have been, and as we started to move it the chairs slide with it and when we plopped it down about a foot away from the wall, where it had been, the chairs snapped into position as if by magic. The little warning light tickling my curiosity inside my head all the while.
That's when I woke up.
