Are most vitamin supplements junk?

I found this interesting article by Raymond Franics who is a chemist. He has been a consultant for vitamin supplement companies in the past and has certainly learned a thing or two about them. According to him, almost all vitamin supplements are junk. As a chemist he started making his own because he couldn't find supplements that were adequate. Now one could argue there is a conflict of interest here because he now sells his own products, but I found the article (part of which is posted below) to be very plausible and certainly food for thought. Supplements: Who and What Can You Trust?

by Raymond Francis

Almost all vitamin supplements are junk. Large-scale epidemiological studies by the federal Centers for Disease Control and the National Research Council (NRC) have failed to find health benefits among people who take vitamins. The NRC issued a report saying there is no conclusive evidence of any healthful effect from taking vitamin supplements. Last July an Oxford University study in the medical journal Lancet announced that vitamins are “a waste of money.” There is a good reason for all this—most supplements are ineffective. Yet supplements are a necessity. It is almost impossible to be healthy without them.
Because we are not getting the nutrition we need, more than 75 percent of us have a diagnosable chronic disease. In April of 1998, the National Academy of Sciences issued a profound statement saying that most people will not get all the vitamins they need, even if they eat a good diet with lots of fruit and vegetables.

In June of 2002, a landmark study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, using 36 years of data, concluded that everyone needs a daily multivitamin regardless of age or health. It is no longer possible to avoid serious disease without supplementing. Depleted soils, premature harvesting, long transit times to market, processing, and a host of other factors have drastically reduced the nutritional quality of our food.

It takes an enormous amount of knowledge, care, and expense to create an effective vitamin supplement. Since the basis of competition in the supplement market is price, there is little incentive to create quality, especially since the buyer cannot see the quality, and reading labels never gives enough information to fully evaluate a supplement. There are only a few dozen scientists in the US today who know how to create an effective supplement, and their expertise does not come cheaply. Add to that the cost of high quality ingredients and optimal manufacturing, storage and transportation. Then factor in the time and money it would take to educate the consumer, and you can see why very few manufacturers even attempt to make a good supplement. The result? Most supplements are either ineffective or only marginally effective, and many of them are toxic.

Let us take a closer look at what it takes to make an effective vitamin supplement:

Dissolvability. Studies have shown that almost half of all vitamin formulas do not dissolve soon enough to be absorbed by the body. Binders, used to hold the pill together, can prevent it from dissolving. Lubricants can also bind tightly to the nutrient particles and prevent them from being dissolved. If you know how to design them and are willing to bear the added cost, there are binders and lubricants that work without inhibiting dissolution. The particle size of the powder also makes a difference in how fast the nutrients will dissolve; finer sizes dissolve faster but cost more and are more difficult to handle.

Molecular Structure. Most vitamin formulas are made from petroleum-based synthetics because they are the least expensive form. Unfortunately, these synthetic vitamins can be fundamentally different from vitamins found in nature. The most serious problem is the shape of their molecules, which are often the mirror image of their natural counterparts. Similar to a right hand versus a left hand; they are both the same—yet fundamentally different. It is the precise shape of a molecule that tells the body what to do with it. A slightly different shape will produce different results, often ineffective or even toxic results! Petroleum-based synthetics also lack the natural co-factor and synergist molecules found in food.

Allergens. Many supplement ingredients are derived from food sources, but the cheapest sources are also common allergens, such as corn, milk, wheat, and soy. Unfortunately, information regarding the source is not listed on the label. Usually when a label claims to be allergen-free, it means that the ingredients are made from petrochemicals. However, even in such formulas, additives such as the fillers, binders, and lubricants often contain allergens.

Low quality ingredients. Every ingredient is available in a range of different purities and chemical forms. By purchasing lower grade purity and inexpensive forms, the supplement manufacturer can save a lot of money while the consumer is none the wiser. The lowest acceptable purity is called “food grade,” and it is the least expensive. Most popular brands are made from these low cost, impure, food-grade ingredients. These nutrients have been found to contain toxic heavy metals, such as lead and arsenic, as well as pesticides and other harmful chemical contaminants. Consider the most common source of calcium — calcium carbonate — made from inexpensive, ground-up seashells that have been harvested from polluted waters and contain toxins. Not only is this cheap form of calcium toxic, it also has very low biological activity; only about 10 percent of the calcium is actually used by the body.
The chemical form of a mineral that will produce the highest bioactivity is in combination with a specific amino acid transporter, or “chelator.” Calcium citrate is an example. You can spot a low-quality formula when the label lists carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, oxides, and amino acid chelates (instead of designating a specific amino acid) or proteinates (another word for nonspecific amino acid chelates). Better formulas will combine the mineral with the correct amino acid.

Additives. Most vitamin pills contain up to 50 percent additives. These additives are of even lower purity than food grade nutrients. They include lubricants, binders, artificial colors, flavors and fillers. Unfortunately, these additives can be allergenic and toxic and can interfere with the absorption of the nutrients. Many additives are totally unnecessary. Fillers, for example, are added to make pills bigger.

Toxic Forms. Formulated incorrectly, even vitamins and minerals themselves can become toxins. Most vitamin formulas contain nutrients in chemical forms that are difficult for the body to excrete. These can build up in the body and become toxic. For example, vitamin B6 is known to be toxic in higher doses. However, if the correct chemical form is used, any excess B6 is easily removed from the body so it does not build to toxic levels. Similarly, minerals such as selenium and chromium, even at low levels, can be quite toxic in their inorganic forms; their correct and more expensive organic forms eliminate the problem.

Adjusted to pH. In the human digestive system, there are extremes of pH. In the stomach, pH is extremely acidic. Yet the absorption of nutrients takes place in the small intestine, which is an extremely alkaline environment. This range of extremes can damage nutrients and render them useless. However, if a supplement formula is properly buffered, stabilized, and balanced, the nutrients will survive. Each and every ingredient must be considered individually and as part of the total formula in order to achieve a combination that will survive the full range of pH extremes, and go on to be absorbed and utilized.

Adverse reactions between the nutrients. Most manufacturers unwittingly dump an assortment of cheap vitamins and minerals into a formula and sell them to the public with a lot of marketing hype. As these ingredients progress from the extremely acid stomach to the extremely alkaline small intestine, they often react with each other in ways that destroy nutrient value. For example, this is the reason why knowledgeable manufacturers will exclude iron, copper, and iodine from their multivitamin formula; they react with and destroy other nutrients. Preventing these interactions requires specialized knowledge and extra cost to select nonreactive chemical forms.

Competition for absorption. Nutrients can compete for absorption. Nutrients that lose this competition will pass through the body unused. To avoid these problems, the chemical forms of the nutrients must be carefully chosen to minimize competition. Again, few manufacturers do this because either they lack the expertise or they are unwilling to pay for the more expensive assortment of ingredients this requires.

Additional Considerations. There are many additional considerations required to make a high quality vitamin supplement. One consideration is the age of the ingredients. To save money, some manufacturers purchase old and even outdated ingredients whose potency has been diminished. How the ingredients have been shipped and stored also makes a difference. Shipping in an unrefrigerated truck in the summer and/or storage in a hot and humid warehouse will damage the potency. Having the mixed products sitting around prior to tableting and packaging exposes the ingredients to oxygen, moisture, and light, all of which can damage the nutrients. The packaging must be done carefully and correctly to protect the nutrients until the user consumes the product.

Re: Are most vitamin supplements junk? - Personal consideration

This is just to add a consideration I had when researching on Echinacea herb properties.

I discovered some products tricks:
1.- the product sold near home contain a very low dosis (200mg). On internet I saw recommendations of up to 4000mg. I also located in Australia, an online pharmacy with pills of up to 5000mg.
2.- the product contents is a fraud. Some products do not contain enough purity and active elements to really affect the consumer.
3.- the product contains toxics!

As a consequence I realised that it is not only important to research what supplements to take. It is also critical to research a brand to buy.

I provide a link to the Web Site I found some useful information:
_http://www.consumerlab.com/

Relating to the Echniacea study results summary:
_http://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/echinacea/echinacea/

Five of (11) the products purchased by ConsumerLab.com, failed our tests.
...
One had excessive lead contamination.

As a consequence I'm really concerned about what to buy. The book "Detoxify or die", provide some info on reliable brands. Nonetheless the difficulty for me is to find some reliable brand that sells in Europe.

Precisely, I'm now in the process of research for this issue.

Regards,
Jordi

The reason I posted that information about vitamin supplements is because I am about to start overhauling my diet, such as eating mainly vegetables and fruits. I've ordered "Detoxify or Die" and know that vitamin supplements are very important during the detoxification process. I therefore require vitamins that don't contain more toxins (many do!), and ones that don't just use fillers to bulk them up.

Jordifs, I live in Australia, so I will check that online pharmacy out. Do you have a link?

Very interesting topic.
I watched a movie yesterday "Food Matters"
Various people talk about high doses of vitamins as an activators of human slaveholder system and they spoke about doses like 3000mg of Niacin or Vita C for example.
I am going to meet my trusted doctor friend who will tell me where exactly i can get high dose vitamin supplements and ill report back

USANA brand recommended

On past research I located a person that strongly recommends one brand: USANA. This person says to take this brand products without any appreciable contraindication.
Link:
_http://www.willthomasonline.net/willthomasonline/The_USANA_Story.html
_http://www.willthomasonline.net/willthomasonline/Try_This.html

One thing that interested me a lot is the following product:
Link:
_http://products.usana.com/bin/UK_HealthPak.pdf

As anyone can see the content is amazing, an all-in-wonder solution. Combines almost all elements I looked for. As a matter of fact I am in search of something like that. I am not a medic, I can research and try to inform as much as I can. Nonetheless is somewhat costly to reserach a lot of products, brands, compare, and at the end buy a huge amount of different products and take 32 pills per day. Even if you can, some products cannot be found on the local shop. As a consequence an Internet shop is required with high transport costs.

One warning: all USANA pills are made with Soya/Soy.
It would be nice to know if the Soya/Soy quantity present on each pill may affect the body. Nonetheless if anyone wish Soya/Soy (which may be dangerous) can buy 100% Soy pills.

If anyone knows of a similar product with a content that combines a complete set of desirable elements, please let us know!

Yours,
Jordi

Hi jordifs,

If you've not taken this quiz yet - http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=11672.msg82970#msg82970 - it would be a good idea to give you some sense of exactly what your body is deficient in - so you don't have to take 32 pills a day.

Ideally, a person should only take supplements for those things they are actually deficient in. Also, soy is very bad and should be avoided at all costs, so if all of these supplements you are talking about are made with soy, it would be best to find different supplements.

Greetings! This is a great thread!

I know that none of you know me from Sally-supplements, but as an introduction I will tell you that; I have been working in the natural supplements industry for over 10 years. The company that I work for has extraordinary standards and only carries in our stores, the very highest quality. Most of the companies we do business with begin with the raw materials. They test in their labs to make sure that what they have received is the real thing and that it is not spiked with chemicals, toxins or any other substance that it is not supposed to be there (bacterias, fungus etc). They refuse shipments that do not meet that standard, and they would rather delay manufacture then produce anything of the highest and safest quality. In addition, when they do these chemical assays, they are able to identify the levels of the active constituents that are present, and have a starting point from which to standardize (this usually refers to herbs, by the way) the actives to a percentage known to be therapeutically effective.

The next step involves the mixing of the ingredients, which under Good Manufacturing Standards, is done under precise conditions and with a "paper-trail" of activity through the entire process. After a supplement is produced, it is returned to the lab and tested to make sure the the amounts they claim are present, are actually present. Many of these companies have even run tests to determine what the time-frame of breakdown is. For instance; at the time of manufacture, their test may say this particular supplement contains 500mg of vitamin C. How long does it take for this vitamin C to break down and become ineffective? After how long, does this vitamin essentially only contain 400mg, or 300mg. There are some companies who actually use a little more of certain vitamins, having worked out when they will be hitting the shelf in the store, how long they are likely to stay there, and once a consumer has bought it, how quickly are they likely to use it. Important to work the average on the breakdown to be as close as possible for what they claim on the bottle.

Further more, they are looking at which forms are most stable, and when they break down, are they breaking down in to oxidative substances? (unstable substances that steal molecules from your tissues in order to stabilize themselves) Or do they become inert and harmless? Is the particular form of the vitamin and what it has been bound to, absorbable ... both in terms of molecule size and in ratios. By ratio, I mean for instance that iron is better absorbed in the presence of a small amount of b-12, b-6 and folic acid in specific ratios to eachother. There are many studies that have been done which show optimal ratios of one vitamin to another; one essential fatty acid to another and of course, all of these concepts are what make each company different. Their particular philosophy of the optimal formulation. The more sophisticated the process, the more studies and precedents behind them, the more expensive they are.

I also like the fact that most of these companies send out batch samples to 3rd party laboratories to confirm the results of their chemical assays on finished product. (starting to sound expensive, isn't it!) They are not using chemical binders and excipients, artificial colorings and flavorings. And they do not smack a giant label across the front saying, "Now With Lutien!", and then sprinkle the tiniest amount of lutien in to the ingredients as if this would have any effect at all. The companies I am accustomed to doing business with, do not add an ingredient without purpose, and those they do add are included in known safe and therapeutic amounts.

Never fear!!! There are definitely some companies that you can count on ( and some that you cannot. I agree with all of the above posters, that you should carefully research what you put in your body) The following list is, from my experience, the best of the best, and here is hoping you have some access to them in the countries where you are located. (I am the US)

For vitamin Supplements:

GARDEN OF LIFE:
Food-state Vitamins:
Especially their Vitamin Code Line. All of the vitamins are derived from raw foods. And they include the enzymes that break down those foods into their most absorbable form, and then they add "whole food" concentrates aka "superfoods" such as greens and fruits and vegetables known to have a high ORAC value = high antioxidant activity. The body recognises FOOD!
Pro biotics:
Primal Defense (friendly intestinal flora/bacteria) This company derives their bacteria from homeostatic soil-based organisms. They are shelf stable and travel well!

They also make some great fiber supplements and an excellent 10 day bowel cleanse.

MEGAFOODS:
Food State Vitamins:
Again, these are derived directly from food and are in optimal ratios, containing enzymes and are highly absorbable.
Pro biotics:
Megaflora contains 14 different strains of friendly bacteria and 20 billion bacterial count per cap.

NEW CHAPTER:
Food Grown Vitamins:
In food grown, they start with USP vitamins and feed them to sacromyacees yeast, which are already high in B vitamins. They then fractionate/kill the yeast and feed them to friendly bacteria which digest this in to a rich matrix of nutrients which the body recognises as food. They then combine them with organic whole food concentrates and vwalla! They have predigested via a sophisticated form of fermentation, a vitamin which is highly absorbable!
Herbs:
Standardized to therapeutic percentages of the active compounds. In most cases, they are using an extraction method called Super-Critical, which uses CO2 (no chemicals!). When CO2 is put under high pressure, it turns to a liquid; combined with the herb it binds to all of the chemical components, is separated from the rest of the plant, and when the pressure is removed, the CO2 flashes back to a gas leaving just a pure herbal extract! No damage to the environment. No chemical traces left over, and somehow ... it is significantly more potent and absorbable / bio-available than most other companies.

GAIA:
Herbs:
Brilliant herbal company with liquid tinctures and also concentrated liquid herbal capsules. I know less about their particular extraction method, but I know that they are dedicated to the environment and high ideals and avoid using hexane and other damaging chemicals in their process. Also, this company has conducted a lot of studies (Jordif: This is the company you want to look at for your Echinacea) They have my favorite liquid concentrate of elderberry, too!

JARROW:
Amino Acids:
I love this company for their absolute purity with pharmaceutical grade amino acids. Nobody I know of (over the counter), does them better.
Antioxidants:
They also do antioxidants top notch! Such as alpha-lipoic acid, resveritrol, CoQ10, N-acetyl cystein and much more.
Pro biotics:
Jarrow EPS, shelf stable enteric coated, 8 species of bacteria and a 5 billion count per cap. They also have chewables for kids and powder for infants.

ENZYMEDICA:
Enzymes:
Digestive enzymes ranging from a basic, including something to break down each different category of food, to high potency enzymes which have a larger range of different enzymes and significantly higher amounts. One of the things that makes them so different from others is that in their amylase, protease, cellulase, lypase and phytase, their are 3 or 4 kinds of each which function at various PH levels. Throughout the intestinal tract, we have a range of PH levels, and these enzymes are working the entire way through the stomach and intestinal tract.

They also have unique blends for those who are lactose intolerant or have trouble breaking down fats, or my favorite!... a specific enzyme that breaks down GLUTEN!!! Yeah!!!

They also make what I possibly wrongly refer to as, proteolytic enzymes. These are enzymes that are taken on an empty stomach and make their way in to the bloodstream where they break down specific proteins. For instance, they have a blend that breaks down candida(yeast), not by just bursting the cellular wall of the organism and releasing it's toxic insides in to your system, but by digesting the cell and it's content! Or my personal favorite, Repair Gold, which breaks down the proteins that contribute to inflammation in all of the tissues. They have another that breaks down viral proteins, and another that breaks down fibrous blockages. Brilliant company!!!

RENEW LIFE:
Intestinal Health:
*The best fiber supplements, most of which are psyllium-free.
*An array of cleanses of which my favorites are: Cleans Smart, which is a 30 whole body cleanse which works on the liver, blood, lymph, kidneys, lungs and bowels.
*A 2 week intensive liver cleanse, a heavy-metal cleanse and more!
Probiotics:
Excellent high potency... 10 strains available in 15, 30 and 50 billion count per cap. Also, the best kids chewable probiotic there is.

Enzymes:
DigestMore Ultra has an excellent full spectrum of active plant based enzymes at therapeutic doses. DigestMore is slightly different. Still has a nice spectrum and amount of enzymes, but also has ingredients that are soothing, anti-inflamatory and healing to the intestinal lining. Very, very nice!

FISH OILS - THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME!!!
AND THEY CAN SERIOUSLY HURT YOU IF THEY ARE HIGH IN HEAVY METALS AND OTHER TOXINS!!!

NORDIC NATURALS:
Fish oils:
They are molecularly distilled and processed in a low oxygen environment to prevent oxidation of the oils. Super clean, pharmaceutical grade (=pure), and doesn't burp up that fishy taste! What causes that fishy taste in others? Exposure to oxygen before they are sealed, causes the oils to break down and not only do they taste bad, but they put more of an oxidative burden on the body. Many people take vitamin E with their fish oil to reduce this effect. But heck?!?! Why bother? Get a good product to start with. These guys have fish oil, cod-liver oil, high potency fish oil. High potency EPA. High potency DHA. Almost my favorite company. Who is my favorite?

MINAMI:
Best of the best! Much like New Chapter does with their Super-Critical Herbal Extracts, these guys use CO2 which actually takes it a step further than molecular distillation in terms of the end result of how many parts per million there are of ANY kind of contaminants. Also, because of this method, there is NO oxygen exposure, and they yield high potencies without having to process the oils multiple times. Bonus ... they do not impact the environment with this process. (made in Italy)

OTHER EFA'S (Essential Fatty Acids: They are essential because you cannot produce them in your own body. It is essential that you obtain them from a food source.)

Are you vegan? Vegetarian? Don't like fish oil? Prefer Flax oil?
Vega (made by Sequel Naturals) makes an Antioxidant EFA Oil Blend with an amazing ingredient list: Organic hemp seed oil, organic flax seed oil, antioxidant oil blend (organic green tea seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, black cumin seed oil, black raspberry seed oil, blueberry seed oil and cranberry seed oil), organic pumpkin seed oil and organic coconut oil.

This complementary blend of oils contain:
o Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
o Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
o Omega-9 and Omega 5 Fatty Acids
o Monounsaturated Fatty Acids
o Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)
o Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT)
o Stearic and Palmitic Acids
o Tocopherols and Tocotrienols
o Carotenoids and Sterols
o Chlorophyll and other phytonutrients
(not sure if they can export this as it must remain at a stable cool temp. If you can't get your hands on it, Hemp oil is in general a better choice than flax.) These guys also make some extraordinarily nutrient dense whole food based protein shakes and bars (though I must admit they taste a little earthy. Not too difficult to jazz them up. Try mixing your protein shakes in Coconut water! Tasty! And high in magnesium, potassium and electrolytes. Want a great sports drink a la natural? Forget that Gatorade garbage and most of the others. Coconut water is perfect.)

Speaking of protein shakes, Jay Rob makes an excellent egg-white-protien!

Hmmmm.... what else. Well I will just mention a few things that are individual favorites:

*Gaia, Liquid Elderberry Concentrate
*Nutribiotic, GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract)
*Sovereign Silver, Bio-active silver hydrosol (equivalent of colloidal silver, but more stable and evenly disbursed)
*Enzymatic Therapy, Heartburn Free (Orange Peel Extract / great for those w chronic problems)
*Enzymatic Therapy, Glucosamine & Chondroiten
*Enzymatic Therapy, Maca
*Enzymatic Therapy, Garlic
*Garden of Life, Coconut Oil (MCG's)
*New Chapter, Bone Strength
*Vibrant Health, Green Vibrance and Field of Greens
*Vibrant Health, Red Marine Algae
*Jarrow, 5-HTP
*Jarrow, L-glutamine powder.
*Now, Stevia powder with inulin
*Boiron, Occillococcinum (homeopathic flu remedy)
*B&T, Alpha CF (Homeopathic cold and flu remedy)
*Jarrow, Quercitin

And just to point out a little something, cuz I can understand how someone might misinterpret my motivations here. I will state clearly. I wish to share what I know (even if my spelling is pretty awful :) To share my expertise with others. I do it everyday; Its my job... My passion, and this seems like a worthy group to invest a couple of hours of writing in to. I do not mention my company because I am not advertising for them and I do not speak for them. I mention a very wide range of companies, all of whom do some things really well and other companies do them better. I have no monetary investments in any of these companies and stand to gain absolutely nothing if you buy them... or something like them.

And... one last thing. If you care about the freedom to be able have clean, natural, unadulterated food and access to natural supplements in therapeutic doses without your government jumping in to tell you what you can and connot take, under the auspices of protecting you; you may want to check out what is the Codex Alimentarius. If you haven't heard of Codex Alimentarius, you should learn about it. It's a set of codes and standards created by the World Trade Organization and some other mysterious entities to standardize and mass produce food. Ostensibly it is "for our own good", but ultimately is for the profits of corporations. You decide:

I do not take 32 pills per day. It is a bad sample of an idea: imagine 64 nutrients required, and imagine somebody wants them all in individual pills and differents brands. The conclusion is that a lot of effort is required to fulfill this "goal". See that this is just a sample, not my personal wish.

I know about Soy. Yes, all pills have Soy, but it is not a main component, it is used to made the pill carcass that keep all contents within. The product composition details do not provide any indication about how many Soy "mg" are in. At the same time I read an article of how to become a USANA distributor. It is wierd as it looks like a pyramidal structure, but hey! I'm just landing and I have not enough information to present a formal conclusion, yet.

Another detail: the amount of Alpha Lipoic Acid present in the "Health Pack 100" is almost non-existent. About 2-6mg per day. I was researching pills to take about 250-500mg per day. I found this quantity too low.

not to infringe upon the Law of Confusion (much less this newbie's privacy), but R has been living on Vega Berry Flavour for close to 3 years now and quite enjoys it, to the consternation of many friends and co-workers. Once in awhile, a pair of organic chicken thighs (preferably pulverized with jerk spice and served with a [six-pack's worth of] cold Red Stripe) is coveted, but Laura and her higher-selves (and possibly his as well) assure him that such a craving is merely an artifact of slightly negative 3rd density polarization. :D

I happened to listen to a recent interview on Red Ice Creations about nutrition and the guest address's this very topic. He stated that some supplements were fine and others were not. The interview is with Dr. Andrew Saul and links are there to his website and other relevant links. I think it is a worthwhile listen. First hour is free to download.
Enjoy.

Recently, I bought a lot of supplements, some in preparation for iodine protocol. One of them was selenium, but I wasn't educated enough and bought sodium selenite anhydrous instead of the organic one (my thought process went like that: if it's not from yeast = good, which apparently is not the case?). So my question is: is there anything I can do with it, since from 3D Resident's post it sounds like I should stay away from it?
