Armed militia, incl. Bundy bros, occupy forest reserve HQ in Oregon, call ‘US patriots’ to arms

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s three sons and “about 150” militiamen have occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge HQ to protest the pending imprisonment of two Oregon ranchers accused of arson, arguing the federal government has no authority in local cases.

“We’re going to be freeing these lands up, and getting ranchers back to ranching, getting the loggers back to logging, getting the miners back to mining where they could do it under the protection of the people and not be afraid of this tyranny that’s been set upon them,” Ammon Bundy, who appears to be the leader of the group, said in a Facebook video posted by Sarah Dee Spurlock on Saturday. Bundy appears to be standing at the scene of the takeover, surrounded by several men in military-style uniforms with rifles and hand-held radios.

The rancher points out that Harney County used to be the richest in state, and is now the poorest. His radical proposal to solve the situation is to have armed “patriots” come and live in a de-facto self-rule zone independent of the federal authorities.

Folks out west have been battling the feds for a long time over land rights. Just look at the percentage of land federally owned!! Legally, they are screwed.

Thanks Lilou, I read the news but I did not understand although I took it with alarm, there is a big difference from west states to east ones.

In this article posted by Oregon Live, there is a video posting by the group leader making a call for others to come join them.

http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2016/01/drama_in_burns_ends_with_quiet.html#incart_big-photo

In phone interviews from inside the occupied building Saturday night, Ammon Bundy and his brother, Ryan Bundy, said they are not looking to hurt anyone. But they would not rule out violence if police try to remove them, they said.

"The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds," Ammon Bundy said.

"We're planning on staying here for years, absolutely," he added. "This is not a decision we've made at the last minute."...

Neither would say how many people are in the building or whether they are armed. Ryan Bundy said there are no hostages, but the group is demanding that the Hammonds be released and the federal government relinquish control of the Malheur National Forest.

He said many would be willing to fight — and die, if necessary — to defend what they see as constitutionally protected rights for states, counties and individuals to manage local lands.

"The best possible outcome is that the ranchers that have been kicked out of the area, then they will come back and reclaim their land, and the wildlife refuge will be shut down forever and the federal government will relinquish such control," he said. "What we're doing is not rebellious. What we're doing is in accordance with the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land."

Government sources told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the militia also was planning to occupy a closed wildland fire station near the town of Frenchglen. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management posts crews there during the fire season.

Law enforcement officials so far have not commented on the situation. Oregon State Police, the Harney County Sheriff's Office and the FBI were involved.

Ammon Bundy posted a video on his Facebook page calling on patriots from across the country to report to the refuge – with their weapons.

With 150 militia men already there, most likely armed, and a call being made out for more people to show up with weapons, this could heat up quickly.

I'm all for people standing up for their rights, but am I the only one who's a little concerned about the environmental consequences of those kind of extractive activities? I mean if I remember correctly part of the reason the US fought for independence was because the British were preventing them from settling and developing too far west... :ohboy:

It will be interesting to see how the US government reacts. Depending on what they do and how, they will reveal a lot about their general stategy in regards to population management.

This reminded me of 22 years ago, on a 1st of January, incidentally, when the Zapatistas came out of the woods, both literally and in a more general sense, in southern Mexico. At first the government called them "professionals of violence" (i.e. terrorists) and there was some fighting. They would have been wiped out easily, since they had barely any training nor weapons. But as soon as the government saw that the population sympathized a lot with them, it changed its tune and since then it has played a game of containement, ignoring and negotiating in turns. On many occasions the government lost PR battles because the Zapatistas excelled at that, mainly through the voice and lyrical writings of 'Subcomandante Marcos'.

But the US is not Mexico, and we live in the post 9-11 world now where terror hysteria reins alongside a lot of social and economic discontent. So we'll see what happens.

It will be interesting! I wonder if the worsening economic situation in the US is part of what's pushing people to ranch, log, and mine more on traditionally forbidden territory.

No body said squat when the great white settlers took the land from the Burns Paiute Tribe in Burns Or. in the 1800's.

Welcome to the Burns Paiute Tribe
The appearance of white settlers
Monday, 15 September 2008
http://www.burnspaiute-nsn.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57:the-appearance-of-white-settlers&catid=37:history&Itemid=57

The first Europeans with whom the Wadatika had contact were trappers who explored the area looking for beaver in the 1820's, 30's and 40's. By the late 1840's, the relations between the Indians and the Whites were already strained. By that time many Whites were moving through the area on the Oregon Trail on their way to western Oregon and the coast. Epidemics of smallpox, cholera, and other diseases brought into the area by Europeans had swept through the tribe in the 1830's and 1840's. The diseases killed many Indians, especially the young and the elderly tribal members.

Settlers first moved into what is now Harney County as late as 1862, years after settlers poured into western Oregon. Cattlemen then quickly began to take land or buy up homesteads to run their huge herds of livestock over the land. The limits of the native ecology were severely stressed due to the grazing of livestock by the expanding foreign population and the increase in hunting and fishing by those same people. Resources depended upon by the Paiute people were depleted or destroyed. But, as the Paiutes noticed, the settlers brought with them resources of their own--those very livestock and horses that were eating and trampling the Wadatika's food supplies. Raiding wagon trains and camps increased as more outsiders came through the Wadatika's territory and destroyed their livelihood. By the 1840's the northern Paiute bands had acquired horses and guns, and such raids became an important way for the Wadatika people to defend themselves and survive. In response, the U.S. Army set up its first military outpost, Camp Alvord, in 1864. By 1867 Fort Harney was established.

While the tribes to the north (the Cayuse, Umatilla, Wallawalla, Wasco, John Day, Deschutes and Tygh) were confined to the Umatilla and Warm Springs reservations by 1856, the northern Paiutes continued their seasonal migrations for another decade. During these years the fighting between the Indians and the encroaching Whites became bitter, with the raids on wagon trains and army surveyors increasing. Punishing parties were sent out by the Whites to kill any Indian seen, whether man, woman or child. The Indians were fighting for their land, culture and their very lives.

From Raw Story:
Militia members protesting a federal prison sentence for two Oregon ranchers convicted on charges of setting fire to federal land have occupied the headquarters of a national park, the OregonLive reports.

The protesters include Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s son, Ammon, and two of his brothers. Also among them is Ryan Payne, who organized snipers to aim weapons at federal officers during the Bundy Ranch standoff last year.

They told OregonLive that they are accompanied by about 150 others and are hunkered down at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. The group is described by reporter Les Zaitz as “hard core militia” who adopted the ranchers’ cause as their own.

“The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds,” Ammon Bundy told Zaitz in a phone interview from inside the headquarters. “We’re planning on staying here for years, absolutely. This is not a decision we’ve made at the last minute.”

He would not rule out the possibility of violence.

That 150 number might be questionable. According to the original RT report linked above: "The militiamen told OregonLive there were about 150 of them, but a couple who delivered food to the refuge HQ estimated that there were just 15." So maybe a storm in a teacup?

What seemed baffling was the fact that these guys were being sent back to prison to serve extended terms, which on the face of it seems unjust, you can see how easy it would be to whip up support for them based on that sentiment. But read the back story to what they were found guilty of and it sheds a different light – seems these guys aren’t just ‘good old boys fighting fer their rights’, the whole thing is an extension of a ‘screw everyone else, we can do whatever we want’ mindset.

It might not be a conscious effort by the federal government to see what will happen among the ‘militia’ types if they press them, but it’ll sure be interesting to see if it does serve as a litmus test.

Actually, I think they've already had "training" for it, in Waco, in 1993. This is what they are capable of.

John Ritzheimer left a goodbye video for his family after storming a federal building with 150 armed terrorists in Oregon on Saturday night. #OregonUnderAttack is the top trending hashtag at this moment.

He is known for his controversial protests. He has previously called for a citizen's arrest of Senator Debbie Stabenow but he is probably best known for a organizing a drawing contest of the Prophet Mohammed. ISIS sympathizers shot at the rally and were killed by police.
