The Living Force
I wanted to make mention of this book, which came out recently. It's not exactly outstanding, but rather noteworthy for the amount of information that Joseph seems to have gotten right -- at least sort of. First, here is the synopsis:
Traces Maya astronomy back to Atlantis
• Shows that the Mayan Calendar was brought to Mexico by survivors of Atlantis
• Correlates scientific studies with the Mayan Calendar to reveal that 2012 could be the start of a new ice age
• Reveals the link between Atlantis and Lemuria discovered by Edgar Cayce
Based on more than 25 years of research around the globe and statements from Edgar Cayce about Atlantis and its Pacific sister civilization of Lemuria, Frank Joseph reveals that the Mayan Calendar was brought to Mexico by survivors of Atlantis. Uncovering the Atlantean influences in both ancient Mesoamerican culture and ancient Egyptian culture, he links the demise of Atlantis with the birth of the Olmec civilization in Mexico (the progenitors of the Maya), the beginning of the first Egyptian dynasty, and the start of the Mayan Calendar.
Joseph explains that the Mayan Calendar was invented by the combined genius of Atlantis and Lemuria and describes how it predicts an eternal cycle of global creation, destruction, and renewal. Correlating this recurring cycle with scientific studies on glacial ice cores and predictions from the Hopi, the Incas, and the Scandinavian Norse, Joseph reveals that 2012 could be the start of a new ice age and the advent of a massive solar storm. However, Joseph shows that the Maya knew the way to reestablish civilization’s cosmic balance before time runs out.
Important drawbacks include trying to shoehorn the Atlantis timeframe so that it fits into the accepted mainstream timeline of human cultural evolution, an overemphasis (in my opinion) on the solar storm mentioned in the synopsis above, and a complete lack of recognition of psychopathy (where his greatest social concern in the case of societal collapse are the 100,000 gang members reported to be living in the US at present). That being said, he does a nice job of tying together data from Plato and Edgar Cayce (the two main parts of the book) on Atlantis in a discussion of the Mayan Calendar Stone, which he argues is actually an almanac created originally by the Olmecs, transmitted to the Maya. More importantly, he treats the possibility of an incipient ice age seriously, connects tectonic and underwater geothermal activity with a weakening magnetic field, and most importantly, tries to establish a link between major cataclysms (including the eruption of Thera) with cometary activity (!).
It's primarily because of that last part that I'm mentioning this book. From our perspective, his conclusions aren't really all that amazing -- however, from the perspective of the whole 2012 franchise, it's probably the first book on the subject that I've come across where I feel like the author has come close to the actual truth in some areas. Also including a tip of the hat to HalfPastHuman in the introduction, FWIW.
Thanks so much!
