"bad" books

Sometimes, you pick a book which seem interesting, and you end up like, what is this BS ?? It happened to me recently (and I will name it, it's "Medical Medium" !), and thinking about it, it's not necessary a waste of time, cause it challenges your "choices" in a way. I mean, I give a good value to this being a truth and to read something which is opposed to what you thought true can help to refine your thinking.

So, one time or another, it's not so hurting to read a "bad" book (yes, occasionnaly !), like a spiraling way to refine your thought. And for you, what do you think ? Did you also found an opportunity to learn something ?

Yes. As long as it doesn't happen too often (thus preventing neural degeneration;-)), sometimes it makes you refine a thought, analyze your own ideas and question whether they are based on facts or not, think about how to provide counter-arguments to what the bad author is saying, etc. I like it when the text has the opposite effect to what the author intended, and makes me think about why I definitely don't want to adhere to his or her views. Other times, it simply gives the opportunity for some healthy ranting! :-P And it's usually a good reminder, for me at least, of how lucky we are around here, to have access to what is VERY often a much wider and complete view of some topics, dots connecting from many different fields, and being open to new data.

I got 'Medical Medium's' book "Liver Rescue" as a Christmas present from my wife's sister (she's completely brain washed by this con artist). I had previously read enough about this guy to know he was a scammer, but I decided to read a few pages to see if there was any real substance behind his claims. Well, I managed to read ca 15 pages until I just had to stop, because it was such complete nonsense. However, it was a good exercise to "spot the errors". The foremost red flags were 1) the author glorifies himself as "the only one who knows these things" 2) the information is not based on any scientific literature; the information is channeled only to the author and we should just take his word for it 3) some of the information is clearly plagiarized from various sources, but not in any coherent way 4) the information and 'advice' goes clearly against many things I believe to be true, that I've learned e.g. through this forum and related sources.

The sad part of it is that the 'Medical Medium' has millions of followers and has sold millions of books, and god knows how these believers are doing health-wise after following his crazy and dangerous recommendations. This scammer should absolutely be exposed, he is endangering people's health!

Added: to answer your question, I agree with Chu, and would add that one of the down sides of mistakenly reading a "bad" book is that you could have used the time for reading a "good" book instead. But with time you develop better discernment (e.g. by reading "bad" books!) so that you can dismiss the sources of disinfo much faster. Or, as Gurdjieff said, you grow a stronger 'magnetic center' for attracting 'B-influences' (for that, read In Search of The Miraculous by Ouspensky, if you haven't done so).

Great to see I had the same conclusion : a scammer ! And obvioulsy, I didn't read anything about this guy before... So, I've an add to pass, if someone will to "challenge" (little !) his mind with a bad book, I can send my copy (in French) to him ! It's free ! Just PM me. (I guess, I won't have so much success...)

More seriously, I've learn some things with this little experiment. I'm a big reader, and it's maybe the third book that I can say "OK, direct in the trash can !"

I think so too, it can be an interesting experience, and I guess that it is unusual that the author will completely miss everything and won't make at least a few good points that make you think, question your assumptions, etc.
