LOL...Thax Gandalf. I waffled back and forth between putting it here or there, and finally decided to put it there because it was not just the saving of the pup, but also the people's reaction that made me happy. What can I say....one of my favorite hobbies is confusing myself

I received just the photos via email without names, who the photographer was or the story about a week ago. And I was very touched by the wordless story in photos. I was glad to see the photo gallery from the Herald Sun because that gave a name to the sweet dog rescued. Thanks, Guardian, for sharing this so I could find out the rest of the story. I did a little research and discovered more, as to the words to the story.

When Bibi the tiny Maltese-shitzu cross was blown off a pier in gale-force winds, his despairing owner Sue Drummond feared the worst.

But salvation came in a most unlikely form - a 20-year-old man who was on Brighton pier to scatter his grandmother's ashes into the bay in Melbourne, Australia.

As he was paying his respects, a quick-thinking Raden Soemawinata spotted a desperate Bibi, and stripped down to his shirt and underpants to dive after the terrified dog.

Model hero stoked by gong

Herald-Sun

THE humble hero who saved Bibi the dog from drowning has received a gong from an animal welfare group.

Raden Soemawinata, 20, has been honoured after he dived off Brighton pier to rescue Bibi during gales on Sunday morning.

Mr Soemawinata's feat, which was captured by a Herald Sun photographer, sparked global interest and turned the young chef and part-time model into an instant celebrity.

Animals Australia, which represents more than 40 societies and thousands of individual members, yesterday gave him its Compassionate Citizen Award at a ceremony held at the rescue site.

The organisation's executive director Glenys Oogjes said yesterday that very few people would be willing to put their own life at risk to rescue an animal.

"Raden's action in jumping into the sea in such wild weather to rescue Bibi was truly courageous and most likely saved the life of this little dog," she said. Bibi's owner Sue Drummond said Mr Soemawinata was selfless and brave.

"Bibi would have succumbed if he hadn't jumped in", she said. "He's such a very nice young man".
