Interesting that artists who are so popular are involved in this. While there is lots of truth there, there's some problems. First they seem to focus on Bush as a scapegoat, even though he's just a puppet at best. Second there's some not-so-subtle violent messages that nobody with any common sense should support. The reference to "alien conspiracy theories" as a crazy joke is probably an indication of the sacred cows the rappers themselves don't dare disturb. But still, curious that they did this, and I wonder if this will have any repercussions..

It may not get airtime but it sure is popular on youtube etc, which might in and of itself force the PTB to do damage control. But that too might backfire if the damage control just attracts more attention to the song.

I'm aware of the issues you mentioned, but I simply enjoyed hearing a hip hop song that's not just about gangs, guns and women.
Actually I thought it's funny. Listening to the hook line made me laugh!

This song was produced by an artist called "Immortal Technique"

I think it's great that artists use their medium to tackle those subjects (based on their level of awareness). There are not many.
However, like with anything in art and music, it's about taste, so some like it, some not.
Hip Hop always has more of an aggressive tone to it and foul language but sometimes it's a good way to channel that energy through music.
As a musician myself, I can relate to it. Playing music (drums) or listening to it helps me with The Work in many ways.

Tool and Rage Against the Machine are also good examples of using music as a way to spread some "seeds" of awareness.

I like hearing Mos Def address this - the more information getting out there the better - the larger number of small sparks of truth sent out into the minds of those who could make a difference, the better. Not a big Eminem fan, but Mos - well - he's got a lot goin' on. ;)

Immortal Technique kicks ass. And Mos Def gets points simply for playing the character of the coolest intergalactic hitchhiker ever - Ford Prefect.

On the topic of conscious Hip-Hop.
These guy's are one of my favorite groups with some very thought provoking lyrics.
Plus they're even better live :D

Sweatshop Union - Truman Show

Deceit and denial,
What you're looking for can't be found,
Believe me, child,
No bookstore can help you now,
It doesn't have to be loud,
Or happen to be up in your face,
Most of the time won't even notice half the bullsh** in the place,
All the bad music's in your home, your classrooms and malls,
And now a quick passage yall,
That I picked up in a bathroom stall.

Save the music,
Erase the evil,
Save the children,
Save the people,
Save the trees,
And natures wealth,
Save the world,
Save yourself.

Better safe than sorry,
Better late than never,
Want to get the props,
Better make the effort,
Don't fall in love with the pinup queen,
Stand right, walk left, don't swim upstream,
A to the E, I, O, U,
Sometimes it's why that I won't do,
Press 1 for blame,
Press 2 for proof,
But you wouldn't call this number if you knew the truth.

We think that we see,
But we don't see the half,
We think that we've learned,
But we can't do the math,
We think that we know,
Let yourself go, let yourself go, let yourself go.

We've gotta cut the bullsh**,
And show the proof,
Rip the tree out of the ground,
And expose the roots,
Cause the people that found,
That we on the approach,
Then they keep held us down,
It's the chosen few,
Just sit, get rich,
What we're going through,
Cause 9-5 slaves slave for these corporate fools,
And try to deny that they distort the rules,
Inside minds built pages and forced the youth,
In the schools have been trained to ignore the truth,
In the nation where the threat that approaches you,
Before you take another test,
Know the joke's on you,
They only gave you the textbooks to mold your views,
Living with your soul confused,
Some people don't believe they got us on the loose,
Runnin' around chasin' after golden shoes,
Livin their whole lives doin what they're told you to.

If I only knew what the way was,
What would I do?
If you knew what you knew could save us,
Would you try to?
Cause we're living in a Truman Show,
There's a limit to what you can know,
Shit is different than what you've been told,
You've been sold second hand human souls.

We think that we see,
When we don't see the half,
We think that we've learned,
But we can't do the math,
We think that we know,
Let yourself go, let yourself go, let yourself go.

We think that we see,
When we don't see the half,
We think that we've learned,
But we can't do the math,
We think that we know,
Let yourself go, let yourself go, let yourself go.

Sweatshop Union - Us

The whole world’s a sweatshop, a fascist regime/
With billions of parts, working as a massive machine/
The goal, keep the masses, passive between/
Cash, limozines and other fabulous things/
But, we gotta wake up and notice it’s a load of sh**/
It’s all about ownership, it’s all in who controllin’ it/
Not bout the gold you get, not bout the clothes you’re in/
It’s not about oil, but we’re killing each other over it/
Like a Doberman, chomping on a cat/
It’s a new world order, and they’re bombin on Iraq/
And it’s so f****** heartless, the whole country’s starving/
And yet, they’ve been targeted as a threat regardless/
This all started in days prior to ours/
They arrived from the stars, and survived in the dark/
Now it’s time for the hearts of men/
To march against it/
And realize that the cycle starts and ends with…

Chorus:
Us, we’re the ones that pay for the bombs/
Us, we built the planes that they’re on/
Us, It’s insane all of the ways they conned us/
But we can change it today, it’s just all on/
Us, we’re the ones that pay for the bombs/
Us, we built the planes that they’re on/
Us, It’s insane all the ways we’ve been conned/
Into killing millions of innocent people, but it’s all on…
Us.

Trust me friends, it could never just be us, or just be them/
Sometimes I think it just depends, it’s just pretend/
You can never trust a trend/
Don’t rub your eyes, I’d rather you adjust the lens, look up to them?
Tell me, who the f*** are they?
When did they ever give a damn about what you say?
For what you stand, that’s why you gotta trust me man/
Trust a Bush? That’s like saying trust Sadam/
But for real, you gotta love the fam/
Ask his dad the ex-prez how many drugs he ran/
So trust us, this shits about to flood the land/
Cause government hands can no longer plug the dam/
So f*** the news, fuck the critics, f*** their views/
And if you sit and let it happen then f*** you too/
It’s up to you, I can’t tell you what to do/
But touch the truth, and don’t just judge the few/
But judge us...

Chorus x2
