While looking at alternative sources for fuel, bio gas came up as a source that some have used out of need. Nepal has a program that creates these biogas plants for peoples homes. It operates by containing animal manure, human waste, compost, etc to capture methane gas. The gas is then routed for use for cooking or lighting.
These can be made on smaller scales too:
I'm not sure how much energy a larger system makes, but apparently it's enough for some lighting and cooking gas. I bet a farm could produce a good amount. It could also be a method used in conjunction with other alternative energy methods for running a self sufficient home.
