Hundreds of birds killed during McAllen hail storm

A hail storm that left untold amounts of property damage didn't leave any injuries but winged animals were not as lucky.

McAllen residents and officials are spending the morning collecting and disposing of hundreds of bird bodies.

Officials said the birds were all killed during a Thursday night thunderstorm that dumped several inches of rain and golf ball-sized hail.

The hail stripped trees of leaves and damaged cars and homes in central McAllen.

Officials said the sleeping and roosting birds were caught by surprise and beaten to death by the falling hail stones.

Most of the birds killed were flocks of grackles, which roost together in large groups in trees.

This might explain at least some of the mysterious mass bird deaths in recent years (but I suspect nowhere near all).

That's what I was thinking.

Maybe, tho if I remember right, a lot of them didn't have any evidence of what happened to the birds other than just dropping dead. You'd think hail would leave identifiable damage of some sort.

On the other hand, with all the cover-ups regarding fish deaths (to hide real causes like oil spills perhaps), I wouldn't put it past them to lie.
