I decided to open this thread because from time to time there might be something interesting to report from this small little country in the “Heart of Europe”.
On October 9th we have elections to the president.
The president is elected directly by the people. He needs 51% of the valid votes. If he does not get it there will be a run-off election (Stichwahl) between the two persons that have the most votes.
The current president is one of the most hated presidents of this country I ever saw. Due to his corona politics and further on with his statements about the “energy-crises” (i.e. “We have to grit our teeth”) he lost a lot of his reputation.
And it also is certainly one of the most interesting election campaigns. At the beginning there were 12 persons who wanted to became a candidate.
To become a candidate to the elections they needed 6000 people to officially support them. Not all of them got enough supporters. Unfortunately, one of the most honest persons did not get enough support. Although he certainly would have failed it would have been a good opportunity for more people to get to know him. The guy is named Thomas Schaurecker and he was a really good person during the corona madness. He always is for de-escalation (but not giving in in the subject), trying to encourage union instead of separatism (between the various organizations of the demos i.e.) and – what`s more important – always plays an open hand. Certainly in a way he is naïve but the suggestion “We are president” might stir up some kind of consciousness.

I don’t think anyone of them being really a good person. From one of the candidates I know a story from a friend. is a He seems to be – what we call in German “Schlitzohr” slydog. He tried to betray her in a very stupid way. He ordered via SMS a certain work which she did for him and refused to pay the bill (about 3000 Euro) saying he never ordered it. My friend is a little clever one and when he refused to pay she went to court. And of course she won because she could show that SMS to the judge. According to her the lawyer of her opponent asked his client if he was mad.
A disappointing party to a lot of people is this MFG that was founded during Covid times. At the beginning one hoped that there was something new coming uü but it soon turned out that this party is the very same if not even worse. Members should not worry, the party will do it for them.
In opposition to that sentence there is something new coming up. Schaurecker as well as other organizations insist that people should make their own opinion, they should inform themselves, they should decide for themselves. But I think I will come to that another time.
Nevertheless, I don’t think there is a real chance that someone else becomes president. There will probably be a run-off election between the two persons that have the most votes. and in case of that most people will vote for the old president – IF they vote. The other ones are too unknown, I guess. And you need to have courage to vote for someone new. And not sure that there is someone better to follow!
My problem is – as very often – that my mind is so full of things I want to say and compared to my thoughts my writing is so slow!!!!
P.S. Since months there are rumors about the coalition breaking up between the ruling Green party and the ÖVP. Ministers and other important persons resign. The Greens are looking for a reason and maybe they get it soon when probably chancler Nehammer will have to resign after his party will lose again on September 25th at the county elections in Tyrol.
