Blairs Ditch Their Luxury Apartment
Former prime minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie are selling a flat they bought with the help of a convicted fraudster.
The couple bought two flats in the upmarket Clifton area of Bristol in 2002 when their son Euan was going to study history at the university.
The purchase of the flats was surrounded in controversy because of the involvement of Australian Peter Foster.
Mr Foster, who helped the couple negotiate a £69,000 discount, was jailed last year for four-and-a-half years for fraud.
At the time the flats were bought, Mr Foster was dating Mrs Blair's confidante, Carole Caplin.
The Blairs paid £262,000 for each property and until recently have rented them both out.
The Daily Mail reports the couple have now accepted an offer slightly below their £285,000 asking price for one of the flats.
An identical one in the same block sold for £305,000 in February this year.
The flat was put on the market three months ago with estate agents Hydes of Clifton, with no onward chain.
The agent describes the apartment as a "sizeable luxury two-bedroom apartment situated on the fifth floor of an impressive development".
It boasts hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, a 24ft by 13ft living room with balcony and en-suite master bedroom.
The newspaper reported the agent as saying: "I understand that the housing market is suffering right now but the upper end of the market seems to be doing all right.
"This is a gorgeous flat and it sold for just under the asking price, which I wasn't surprised about."
